  The past of the present

  The use and abuse of history in collective identities formation

  "Persistenze o Rimozioni" launches a call for papers for its VII annual conference: “The past of the present. The use and abuse of history in collective identities formation”. As part of a long-term research project on the contemporary age, the conference wants to analyse the use of the past in building collective identities, with an interdisciplinary approach. The call for papers focuses particularly on the dynamic character of collective identity formation, referring both to the past and the present and favoring those papers in which the present is used as a key to interpret the past.

  The disciplinary constitution of the humanities and social sciences in 19th and 20th century Greece: National traditions and transnational movements

  25th Modern Greek Studies Conference of French-speaking universities

  The biennial Congress of French-speaking Modern Greek Studies scholars will take place from October 12^th to October 14^th, 2017 in Aix-en-Provence. Its aim is to bring together researchers from every domain of the humanities and social sciences. The issue at the heart of this 15^th Congress is the historical progress of certain areas of study towards the status of full-fledged disciplines of the humanities and social sciences in Greece from the moment of the establishment of the Greek state (1830) and within a context allowing the study of this phenomenon in both its regional and its international dimensions.

   

  The works of the Congress will be organized around the following themes:

  1. The emergence, institutionalization, reproduction and diffusion of disciplinary bodies of knowledge.

  2. The way each discipline positions itself with relation to other fields of knowledge and implements its theoretical foundations

  3. The processes of establishing legitimacy for the new disciplines and for the groups framing them

  4. Disciplinarization and the field of Modern Greek Studies

   

  Abstracts must be submitted before February 28^th, 2017, in either French or English.

  The Shoah and the encounter of cultures

  Les génocides ont-ils vu ou subi une rencontre des cultures ? Leur inscription dans le paysage culturel de la planète monde pose-t-il problème ? D’une part, le sujet, en lui-même, pose plus que jamais la question des moyens de la représentation. Et d’autre part, le débat est d’autant plus vif que l’objectif est crucial : il s’agit, dans le cadre d’un génocide, de transmettre une réalité incroyable, impensable... celle de la destruction d’un groupe d’hommes par un autre. La question au centre de ces journées peut être simplement formulée en ces termes : l’inscription des génocides dans une géographie culturelle du monde tant au niveau des faits que de la mémoire est-elle susceptible de manipulations ? Quel avenir porte-t-elle ?

  De l’automne 1837 à l’hiver 1877, la correspondance de Courbet forme une chronique qui révèle les facettes de l’homme et du peintre, ses sociabilités ses conceptions esthétiques, philosophiques ou politiques, et permet d’affiner le contexte de son œuvre et de ses actions. Vingt ans après l’édition de ce document exceptionnel par Petra ten-Doesschate Chu, ce colloque aura deux ambitions : examiner les apports décisifs de cette somme dans les travaux récents ; montrer en quoi ses inépuisables ressources permettent de poursuivre et d’élargir la reconsidération du « maître d’Ornans », au plus près de son incarnation.

  Cette journée d’étude s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet de formation-recherche « La France et l’Allemagne à l’épreuve de la crise migratoire », mené par le Centre d’information et de recherche sur l’Allemagne contemporaine (CIRAC) et l’Institut allemand de politique étrangère (DGAP), avec le soutien du Centre interdisciplinaire d’études et de recherches sur l’Allemagne (CIERA) et du centre de recherche AGORA de l’université de Cergy-Pontoise. Ce projet donnera lieu à deux ateliers de doctorants, à deux journées d’étude et à un colloque sur la période 2017-2018.

  Après les premières vagues de revendications identitaires du tournant des XIX^e et XX^e siècles, puis de l’entre-deux-guerres, les années 1960 voient la renaissance et la multiplication des mouvements d’affirmation particulariste en Europe comme en Amérique du Nord. Nous nous limiterons ici aux espaces de la francophonie, qui offrent un vaste champ d’études cohérent, mais cela n’empêchera pas – elle sera bien au contraire encouragée – une mise en perspective grâce à l’étude succincte d’autres aires géographiques et civilisationnelles.

Elle a réuni historiens, archéologues et historiens de l'art dont les communications ont suscité intérêt et nouveaux questionnements. Afin d'enrichir les thématiques abordées lors de cette rencontre et les compléter par des sujets connexes non traités, la publication des actes sera augmentée de nouveaux articles.

  History Review of the technical modernity in France (the twentieth century to the present)

  Critical thinking of modernity has never been more relevant. She also has a history, especially since the late eighteenth century. Its players may have been either movements (1810 Luddites to the Surrealists in the late 1950s, and other movements today) or relatively isolated thinkers, and more involved in writing (sometimes the pamphlet) than in transformative political action. The proposed program focuses on this second category, most misunderstood, but also addresses the first category – in both cases over a period extending from the early twentieth century to today. It puts them into perspective with some excitement speeches of the dominant technical modernity that often they criticize, especially in the period of the 1930s and that of the years 1960-1980.

  Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’Europe est en pleine décadence. Au cours de cette période difficile, la confrontation entre les deux Europes ne cesse de s’accroître. Face à l’expansionnisme soviétique, les pays d’Europe occidentale se tournent vers les États-Unis qui leurs octroient de l’aide économique et de la protection militaire. La reconstruction de l’Europe fait alors l’objet de débats houleux. Sous la pression des mouvements européanistes, les débats prennent de l’élan surtout à partir de 1948 dans le but de rebâtir l’Europe et la paix en Europe. L’atmosphère de « Guerre froide » est très présente depuis 1946.

  Men in Eastern Europe – Ruptures, Transformations, and Continuities in the 20th Century

  Our main objectives are to reconsider the state of the art and discuss new ways for writing a history of masculinities under socialism. The central questions of the workshop are: Which role were men and fathers to play in the construction of a “new” socialist family? How where masculinities transformed in socialist movements and state-socialist countries? The workshop is interested, on the one hand, in the ideologies and the utopian reflexions of the place of men in a future communist society. On the other hand, it aims at questioning the everyday life of socialist men and fathers, as well as the everyday life of men and fathers living under socialism.

The workshop aims at reconstructing a whole scenario, in which these small entities help outlining a history of the Mediterranean in which such small territories are not only included, but also assessed for their past importance.

  The dynamics of the relationship with the more recent past in early modern Europe: between rejection and acknowledgement

  The roots of the idea of the Renaissance as a time of innovation and revival of learning, wisdom and art after a long period of decline can be traced back to the thought of contemporary groups of intellectuals. This cross-disciplinary international conference proposes to explore the early modern perceived reality of the continuities and the disruptions between the Renaissance and the previous period. By examining the numerous aspects and fields in which this conception of a time that had interposed itself between Antiquity and its renewal manifests, the conference hopes to better clarify the different Renaissance attitudes towards it.
