  The fourth bi-annual conference on Formulas in Medieval Culture (initiated by the research groups GRENDEL and IDEA, based at the University of Lorraine, France) will be held on the 13th, 14th and 15th of June 2018 at the Centre d'Etudes Supérieures de Civilisation Médiévale (CESCM) at the University of Poitiers. In the Middle Ages, modes of thought and representation involving repetition and regularity, which were expected and easily identifiable, were sources of rich tensions between individual expression and collective norms, between change and continuity, between creation and convention.

  Palfreys and rounceys, hackneys and packhorses, warhorses and coursers, not to mention the mysterious “dung mare” – they were all part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Every cleric and monk, no matter how immersed in his devotional routine and books he would be, every nun, no matter how reclusive her life, every peasant, no matter how poor his household, would have some experience of horses. To the medieval people, horses were as habitual as cars in the modern times. Besides, there was the daily co-existence with horses to which many representatives of the gentry and nobility – both male and female – were exposed, which far exceeds the experience of most amateur riders today.

  Strangers at home. Civilizing immigrants between inclusion and exclusion in ancient Thebes

  La religion et le mythe en Grèce ancienne ont eu des fonctions historiques et ont été si étroitement reliés à la vie sociale et politique qu’ils ont eu des interactions constantes avec les contextes politiques. Pour cette raison, ils doivent être analysés d’un point de vue grec, qui prenne en considération leurs arrière-plans historique et archéologique. Les mythes étaient considérés comme une narration du passé et les anciens, loin de les considérer comme un corpus stérile de légendes, les voyaient comme un tissu conjonctif de leur société. En particulier, les mythes sur les origines des communautés urbaines comme Thèbes sont intimement associés aux changements sociaux, car ils ont contribué à la définition des lieux où ils se déroulent, et à la construction d’identités culturelles et nationales.

  Depuis une trentaine d’années, les études sur les émotions constituent un courant important de la recherche historique en général et helléniste en particulier. Les travaux d’Angelos Chaniotis et de David Konstan ont marqué cette tendance, et de nombreux ouvrages sur les émotions en général ou sur des émotions particulières comme aidôs (D. Cairns) ou la colère (Ed. Harris) ont vu le jour. Nous avons choisi d’approfondir une émotion fondamentale, la peur. Outre sa qua­lité de moteur péda­go­gique capital pour la petite enfance, la peur, sous ses différentes formes, combinée à des émotions annexes comme l’angoisse ou la stupeur, accompagne toutes les manifestations de la vie humaine.

  What makes "small" in the viticultural world

  Organisé par l'Identités, territoires, expressions, mobilités (ITEM, UPPA-Pau) et le Centre d'histoire espaces et cultures (CHEC, Clermont-Auvergne), ce colloque interdisciplinaire et international a pour objectif d'interroger la notion de « petit » dans le monde vitivinicole. Il s'agira de réfléchir à la définition et aux contours de ce concept, ainsi qu'aux différentes opportunités qu'il ouvre pour appréhender et étudier la filière vitivinicole. Il regroupe des chercheurs venus de divers horizons, jeunes ou confirmés, français et étrangers et concerne toutes les branches de la filière, depuis la production jusqu'à la consommation, en passant par les activités annexes (courtage, marketing, etc.) ou connexes (alcools de vin, chimie, etc.).

  Die Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW) ist eine Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts mit Sitz in Berlin. Ihr wissenschaftliches Profil ist vor allem geprägt durch langfristig orientierte Grundlagenforschung der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. Die Akademie beschäftigt etwa 350 Mitarbeiter/innen, ihr Jahresbudget beträgt rund 20 Mio. Euro. Die Akademie sucht für das Akademienvorhaben „Alexander von Humboldt auf Reisen – Wissenschaft aus der Bewegung (AvH-R)“ zum 1. Oktober 2017 eine/n wissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/in mit 80% der tariflichen Regelarbeitszeit, zunächst befristet für zwei Jahre.

  In this second number, the journal will publish in its Thematic Section works about the great Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa. João Guimarães Rosa distinguishes himself  by the innovative use of language in his work. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, this issue will dedicate its Thematic Section to the theme "João Guimarães Rosa and the invention of the language from translation point of view" which will privilege unpublished papers that address the author's relationship with language from translation perspective, as well as the innovations he brought to Brazilian literature, such as the translation of his work and its repercussion in other countries.

  The first question that comes to mind when addressing the relationship between art and psychoanalysis is the following: By what right and on what grounds, or yet what entitles psychoanalysis to take upon itself to issue judgment upon art and/or upon artists? This first question immediately unfolds into many. To what extent can a theory of the psychological unconscious extrapolate its primary field of application to head down to theaters, museums, concert rooms, canvases, sculptures, installations and so forth? Being an eminently clinical discipline, do we run the risk of transforming psychoanalysis into a worldview? Into a totalitarian system capable of deciphering the meaning of everything that presents itself upon the suspicious gaze and attentive ears of the psychoanalyst?

  In 1989, a survey of French cultural taste revealed that Serge Gainsbourg was both one of the most popular singers and yet a near outcast in his native country. When he died, two years later, President Mitterrand called him “our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire,” claiming he had “elevated chanson to the level of art.” But he might just as well have acknowledged Gainsbourg as the first artist to top the British charts with a single in a foreign language. With the hindsight of almost thirty years, one thing is, in any case, certain: sampled by Beck, De La Soul, Massive Attack and Fatboy Slim, remixed by Howie B. and David Holmes, translated by Mick Harvey and covered by Iggy Pop, Donna Summer, Portishead, Madeleine Peyroux, the Pet Shop Boys and Franz Ferdinand, “the man with the cabbage head” remains the Francophone songwriter whose contribution to the international appeal of French popular music has been the most significant in the post-war era.

  Creating a forum for exchange in the fields of mental health, disabilities and dependency

  Over the last few decades, health and social services policies have begun to focus on the rights and autonomy of persons receiving care or support. At the same time, the use of “legal coercion” in matters related to mental health, disabilities and dependency has been constantly rising. In France, court-ordered “protective” or guardianship measures have gone from a few thousand to over 800,000 in the last few years for example. Likewise, the number of cases of hospitalization and treatment without consent has been increasing regularly since the 1990’s and has picked up significantly since the latest French Mental Health Act dated July 5, 2011 was implemented (Coldefy, 2017). France is not the only country where this trend can be seen, as the same could be said for a number of European and North American countries as well.
