PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. Dans une optique interdisciplinaire, ce colloque international se propose d'étudier la notion de distance à l'époque moderne (XV-XVIIIe siècle), en la considérant comme un angle essentiel pour les approches spatiales et multi-scalaires mobilisées dans de nombreux travaux en histoire. Que ce soit en termes de circulations, d’échanges ou encore de liens sociaux, les distances se pratiquent et s’éprouvent. Intervalles physiques ou symboliques, elles permettent donc d’aborder le rapport qu’entretiennent les hommes à leur espace.

From the end of the 19th century to the 1980s
Le syndicalisme peut se définir, sur un plan général, comme un outil collectif de défense des intérêts matériels et moraux d'un groupe de salarié·e·s, organisé·e·s par métier ou par branche d'activité ou, de manière croissante au cours du XXe siècle, sur une base intercatégorielle. Très tôt, dès la fin du XIXe, et indépendamment des régimes politiques au sein desquels il évolue, les militant·e·s syndicaux·le·s se posent la question des modalités d'action collective et de défense des intérêts moraux et matériels du mouvement ouvrier, entendu au sens large du terme. L'action du Premier mai 1886 à Chicago et le massacre de Haymarket Square, qui lui succède, le 4 mai, sont, en ce sens, des moments fondateurs de la période à laquelle le colloque sera consacré.

Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity
Second conference of young researchers into pre-Roman Italy
Du 10 au 12 mars 2021 se tiendra à Paris la deuxième édition de la rencontre des jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur l'Italie préromaine. Elle a pour thème « Dépasser la limite ». Le colloque est pluridisciplinaire. Toutes les disciplines sont bienvenues pour discuter de la limite dans toutes ces acceptions : territoriales, culturelles et idéelles. Les analyses pourront se mener à diverses échelles, de l’artefact ou du site à la région. L’ensemble du territoire italien est concerné, des régions septentrionales et intérieures à la Grande Grèce et à la Sicile en passant par la Sardaigne, les façades tyrrhéniennes et adriatiques (avec des extensions possibles vers les territoires immédiatement environnants dont la Corse). Le cadre chronologique envisagé est assez ample, du Bronze récent au Principat d’Auguste.

Problems, methodologies and historical sources from the Antiquity to the present day
The PhD students in History at the University of Pisa (Italy) are pleased to announce a call for papers for a three-days online seminar (December 10-11-12, 2020) concerning the multifaceted concept of identity and its many dimensions. The seminar aims to grasp the complexity and intersection of different affiliations and identity constructions throughout history. In this sense, we will share new methodological and epistemological approaches, with a diachronic, global and interdisciplinary perspective.

Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Pour célébrer le 75ème anniversaire de publication de la Phénoménologie de la perception, Chiasmi International prépare un dossier spécial intitulé « La phénoménologie critique après Merleau-Ponty. » Le terme de phénoménologie critique (de l’anglais critical phenomenology) dénote un important renouveau au cœur de la phénoménologique. Le terme dénote un horizon bourgeonnant de nouvelles questions et orientations inspirées par les fondateurs de la phénoménologie et cherchant à développer de nouveaux concepts et outils phénoménologiques sertis aux complexes défis éthiques et politiques du 21ème siècle. Au fil des dernières années, la phénoménologie critique a donné lieu à l’analyse interdisciplinaire de nombreux phénomènes politiques, éthiques, médicaux, économiques, et culturels, en plus de&nous inviter à reconsidérer les limites et les possibilités de la phénoménologie traditionnelle.

Since the 1960s there has been much critical reflection on the figure of the author, and this has been analysed from several angles in linguistic and literary studies as well as more recent forms of web writing in the wake of the digital revolution. First, structuralism and Saussurian theory laid the groundwork for the renewal of Literary theory. The “death of the author” propounded by Barthes (1961) offered the chance to redefine the essence, the role and the status of the author. The first person to accept this challenge was Michel Foucault, during his lecture Qu’est-ce qu’un auteur? at Collège de France, on 22 February 1969. Beyond the limits of historical and ideologically connoted analysis, debate on the matter is far from settled. On the contrary, the authorial question offers food for thought in different fields of linguistics, philology and literature. If the modern concept of author called for reflection on Beckett’s provocative “qu’importe qui parle?”, even today the number of issues that can be investigated in relation to the author prove how important this is for all three aforementioned disciplines.

Science and madness, extravagance, exception
Alchemists, magicians, outlaw scientists in italian culture
This volume aims at exploring the ways of science as excess and madness (see Zangrandi 2011, 2017; Garlaschelli and Carrer 2017) or, in less tragic forms, as an opportunity to explore new paths of knowledge. Another goal is to shed light on the character’s evolution, tracing the roots of a literary and cultural trope that, since the 20th century, takes on multiple configurations and plays manifold functions. Looking back to the past, this theme can be traced in the Romanticism’s rejection of the exact science and in the particular declination proposed by Leopardi in his Operette morali, or even in the disquieting image of the alchemist of the Renaissance, whose superior knowledge of natural phenomena turns into the extreme and a punishable hybris.

Intersections. New perspectives for public humanities
HFC-INT 2020
The international network Humanities for Change, in accordance with the interdisciplinary spirit and the contaminatory approach that characterize its activities, intends to organize a day of study on the theme of public humanities. The meeting aims to stimulate some reflections coming from different fields of knowledge and to encourage the dialogue between researchers on the possibilities of the humanities to escape from academic circles. In this sense, the main object of study is the analysis of methodologies and tools related to knowledge dissemination practices for historical, artistic and philological-literary disciplines. Particular attention will also be given to new professional figures connected to the degree courses of the humanities faculties (such as the 'public historian') and to the interactions of these professional figures with the new media of communication and mass dissemination.

From ritual to myth: Carnival in European culture
D’où vient la profonde exigence sociale du carnaval et quels sont les thèmes et les motifs que cette tradition a fait émerger dans notre héritage culturel et artistique ? Du drame bouffon à la farce et à la grande tradition de la commedia dell’arte italienne, des observations de Goethe sur le carnaval de Rome aux compositions de Schumann (Carnaval, op. 9) et de Saint-Saëns (Le Carnaval des Animaux), jusqu’à la peinture de Brueghel l’Ancien, Monet, Pissarro et Elrond, le carnaval a fasciné de nombreux auteurs. Le but de ce colloque est de recueillir et de combiner des idées innovatrices pour l’analyse ou la reformulation de ce mythe, en créant un pont entre les perspectives de lecture les plus diverses dans le domaine des humanités.

Digital work: more autonomy or a new subjugation of work?

With digitisation of work a new frontier has opened up in the field of work and exploitation of work, which the current health and economic crisis is widening. The practice and the myth of “smart working” are the signs of a planetary dynamic of capitalist matrix which presents the possible liberation of labour within the framework of a new alienation and subordination of labour to the imperatives of market. Aim of this issue is to critically analyse this dynamic, paying attention to the relationship between “digital platforms” and their “applications”: alongside the intense development of digital technology, we are witnessing the expansion of different modes of intense exploitation of the workforce. Usually these new forms of work are presented as free and autonomous “services”. From these transformations processes, in which the technological element appears on the surface as prevalent on the structure of social relations that actually subsume it, important issues emerge.

In the course of history, the process of creating the image of the “enemy”, has often taken place among people of the same nationality, but strategies aimed at the construction of external enemies were equally widespread. If anti-soviet rhetoric, for instance, occupied a central place in Western countries’ public debates, anti-American sentiments have manifested in different shapes and variants in several geographical areas. This monographic issue intends to contribute to the creation of a space of historiographical debate on “hatred and enemy”, inevitably wide and complex, through the reconstruction of specific case studies that analyze the different shapes and forms taken by these phenomena in different times and places.

Religiousness in Mediterrranean towns (12th-15th century)
Ce quatrième atelier de formation doctorale s’inscrit dans le prolongement direct de la scuola di alti studi dottorali qui, de 2004 à 2016, a constitué un lieu de formation de pointe pour les jeunes chercheurs consacrant leurs recherches à l’étude de la culture locale. L’objectif des ateliers est l’étude des sociétés urbaines du Moyen Âge, en mettant l’accent sur les systèmes politiques et les différentes manifestations de l’imaginaire urbain et en portant le regard sur toutes les villes du bassin méditerranéen – celles de l’Occident chrétien, celles de la zone d’influence byzantine et celles des régions sous domination islamique. Les ateliers offrent un environnement stimulant pour les échanges intellectuels entre spécialistes réputés et jeunes chercheurs en formation, pour favoriser, à travers des moments de discussion et d’échange, le renouvellement de la recherche et l’élargissement des perspectives comparatives.

Work, between action and sufferance
Les hommes n’ont jamais cessé de montrer une profonde ambivalence à l’égard du travail, activité tantôt valorisée, tantôt dévalorisée, tantôt rangée du côté de l’action voire de la création, tantôt du côté de l’infortune et de la nécessité, tantôt considérée comme une souffrance, une punition ou une calamité, tantôt comme un moyen de salut, de libération, d’accès à la sphère éthique et à la reconnaissance. Du fond de l’âge grec, depuis Hésiode et au-delà, comme dans la tradition biblique, nous retrouvons trace de semblable ambivalence, bipolarité inscrite au cœur même de l’expérience du travail. Bien sûr, les traditions et les cultures accusent des traits qui les distinguent voire les opposent quant à l’importance accordée à chacune de ces polarités constitutives de la problématique du travail, en lien avec leur spiritualité religieuse et leur idéologie sociale et politique. Mais quelles que soient ces différences d’approches et d’accents, force est de constater qu’elles ne sont pas parvenues à effacer complètement la dimension alter du travail qu’elles s’efforcent parfois de conjurer, et à convaincre ce faisant de l’unidimensionnalité principielle (positive ou négative, morale ou sociale) du travail humain. Ces journées d’étude seront l’occasion de travailler quelques grandes lignes de cette antinomie, de cette bipolarité de l’agir et du pâtir qui anime la problématique du travail.

Economic, maritime and political perspectives, 1669-1797
This seminar aims to explore the relationship between Venice and the Mediterranean between the loss of Crete, the last major dominion of Venetian maritime empire in 1669, and the end of the Republic in 1797. Through the analysis of economic and commercial exchanges, naval activities and diplomatic/military relations of the Serenissima in the Mediterranean, we aim to discuss the dynamics of transformation and adjustment of the Republic’s new status as a regional power faced with the challenges of an Inner Sea crossed and populated by more powerful and richer competitors.
