Fung Global Fellows Program on "Ethnic Politics and Identities"

During the academic year 2015 / 16, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be “Ethnic Politics and Identities.” Recent events around the world have highlighted the role of ethnic politics and identities in shaping domestic and international political arenas. The Fung Global Fellows Program seeks applications from scholars who explore the causes, narrative modalities, and consequences of the politicization of ethnic, racial, and national divides from a comparative perspective. Researchers working on any historical period of the modern age or region of the world and from any disciplinary background in the social sciences or humanities are encouraged to apply.

Representations of Power and Power of the Image in British and American Contemporary Photography
Représentations du pouvoir et pouvoir de l’image dans la photographie contemporaine américaine et britannique
From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

Class, Gender and Peacebuilding in Peru (1961-2014)
Según el historiador Franklin Pease, ‘hacer una historia de la subversión en el Perú con elemental seriedad, requiere disponer de información confiable, casi nunca al alcance del investigador’. Trabajar sobre grupos alzados en armas que se organizaron en el marco de la 'lucha de clases' desde los años 1960, es tarea difícil en la medida en que significa trabajar sobre la clandestinidad. Nombrar, investigar o repensar a grupos como el ‘Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso’ (PCP-SL) y el Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru (MRTA) supone un peligro para el investigador: ser llamado ‘terrorista’ es común en un medio donde el discurso oficial y el discurso académico han confluido para dar una versión única. Intermediate Groups in the Portuguese Dominions, 16th-18th century
Revista de História (Universidade de São Paulo)
The Revista de História of the University of São Paulo (Brazil) invites interested scholars to submit proposals for articles to be published as part of a ‘dossier’ concerning intermediate groups in the Portuguese dominions on the Early Modern Age. Throughout that period, ‘middle people’ strove to assert themselves in rural areas and helped to shape old and new urban centers in the Portuguese World, corresponding to an increased demand for specialized services and ensuring the necessary extensions of royal representation functions and Church activities. Even though almost non-existent in juridical or normative terms, those groups were recognized both by nationals and foreigners as a complex and vibrant intermediate social layer. Time has come to try and distinguish its specificities, trends of formation and effective roles in social dynamics.

Computation and software analysis have entered nearly every imaginable field of scholarship in the last decades, in a variety of forms from digital publication of results to computational modelling embedded in experimental work. In each of these digital outputs - be it an interactive publication with mapping of relevant geo-referenced data, or perhaps a statistical program for the categorization of millions of books according to their literary genre - there is some manifestation directly in the computer code of the scholarly thought that underlies the project, of the intellectual argument around which the outcome is based.

Academic entrepreneurship in History
An international survey of current research
The Departments of History of Universiteit Gent, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Université Lille 3 and Università di Bologna are jointly organizing the international conference “Academic entrepreneurship in history” on 12-13 March 2015 at the STAM city museum in Ghent, Belgium. The aim of the meeting is to bring together an international group of scholars engaged in research on the notion and practice of academic entrepreneurship from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. The focus will be on the range of actions, behaviors and qualities of academic scientists and their employing institutions which can be seen as entrepreneurial in at least one of the many senses in which the entrepreneurship term has been used in the economics and business history literatures.

Visual Analysis with Digital Tools
Göttingen Center for Digital Humanities (GCDH) International Summer School 2014
The Digital Humanities enhance the methods of traditional research in the humanities through automated data acquisition and processing. Visualisations can play a central role in analysing such data. This Summer School will address a set of fundamental problems, such as requirements for scientific visualisation or visual strategies. The main goal, however, is to focus on the practical side to enable the participants to tackle specific visualisation problems in order to advance their own research. The natural sciences have a long tradition of interest in visualisation methods (just compare magazines like "Science" or "Nature" to any magazine with a humanities background). The humanities are catching up, though, and starting to apply visualisation techniques to answer their own research questions. A set of tools has emerged in recent years and has introduced a number of visualisation practices into the humanities. Charts, graphics, 3D visualisations or "Maps, Graphs, Trees" (to quote the title of a well-known recent book on the subject), should not only illustrate, but also create new knowledge. Only then can we call visualisations a true method in the Digital Humanities.

The PhD in History of Europe intends to promote research on European history, its national specificities and common processes. Special focus will be devoted to political, religious, cultural, economic, and social changes that have marked the European continent from the Middle Ages to present time, as well as the study and critical research on the issues and problems of traditional historiography (organisations and institutions, regional dimensions, behaviours, attitudes, religion, culture, etc.), and the most recent historiographical trends (world history, trans-national history, and cultural experiences).

An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers. “Purity” and “Impurity” establish themselves as structural categories in both Islam and Judaism, embracing dimensions as diverse as the body, food, clothing and even space itself. The 2nd issue of the journal Hamsa will be devoted to this wide-ranging theme, seeking to obtain diachronic historical perspectives. To this effect, we aim to promote the analysis of interfaith relationships, in those instances where purity and impurity are projected in contacts with the Other. Those dimensions concern not only the minorities, but also affect Christianitas itself, through interiorization of these concepts and their application to minority communities (as is the case, for example, with limpeza de sangue - “cleanliness of blood”).

The Relationship Between Intellectual Property and Its Physical Embodiments
This conference aims to look at the relationship between intellectual property and its physical materialisations, with a particular focus on the issue of access and the challenges of new technologies. Speakers will be allocated 20 minutes to present within a panel of three speakers, followed by a 30 minute discussion. Submissions from those in non-legal disciplines and from those in practice are very welcome. We strongly encourage submissions from doctorate students and postdoctoral researchers.

Fernand Braudel – IFER Fellowships - September 2014
The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme and its partners offer postdoctoral fellowships to researchers in the social and human sciences for periods of nine months as part of its "Fernand Braudel-IFER" (International Fellowships for Experienced Researchers) programme. This programme is supported by the European Commision (Action Marie Curie – COFUND – 7th PCRD). The Fernand Braudel-IFER programme breaks down into two sections: the Fernand Braudel-IFER incoming programme is designed for residencies in France (for researchers who belong to a foreign research centre); the Fernand Braudel-IFER outgoing programme is designed for research stays in another European country (for researchers who belong to a French research centre).

New Perspectives on Global Environmental Images
The international conference proposes to mobilise a broad variety of perspectives from a large disciplinary spectrum in order to analyse the strategies and imaginaries that are connected to the production, the circulation and the power of global environmental images. From icons of the environmental movement over expert graphics mobilised by the IPCC to satellite imagery, global environmental images form the sensory basis of our understanding of the planetary processes that govern the “Anthropocene”. The images all actively participate, at very different scales, in our interpretation and understanding of the changes of the Earth system as well as the consequences we closely associate to global climate change. As true mediators between different publics and cultures, between global processes and local impacts, new critical enquiries into global environmental images propose a highly fruitful discussion of the complex relationship between science, society, politics and nature.
