Eating. Between pleasure and necessity

American Art in Dialogue with Africa and the African Diaspora
Since the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade, Africa has played an important — albeit shifting, contested, and often unseen — role in the history of art of the United States. Conference organizers seek original, innovative scholarship investigating heretofore unexamined aspects of this transatlantic dialogue, from the visual culture of slavery and abolitionism to American modernism; from the Black Arts Movement to the contemporary art world. -

10th Middle Ages study day
The Brazilian Association of Medieval Studies (ABREM) will hold its Xth International Meeting of Medieval Studies: Ibero-american dialogues, from July 1st through 5th, at the Universidade de Brasília (UnB), 2013. One of the main goals is to improve the networking between medievalists dedicated to the study of the Iberian Middle Ages. This meeting serves as a hub for latin-american specialists and also improves the connection that several institutes and labs maintain with Portuguese and Spanish researchers. One of its other goals would be to set up interinstitutional and international web researches. Finally, this meeting’s main focus is the Ibero-American medievalism itself. -

Globalisation and Minor Cultural Groups
The role of so-called minority people in rethinking the future of modern societies
Minority groups, whose way of life has historically suffered from globalization, are often cited as victims of global processes, but they are rarely studied for the techniques or technologies of accommodation and resistance they have implemented as a response to global processes— the most devastating of these processes being colonization in its various aspects. Indeed, globalist literature does not yet offer a conceptualization or theorizing of the social, cultural, political and territorial continuity of “minorized” cultures, let alone does it afford enough analytical space to these so-called cultural minorities in the process of questioning the values and practices of globalization. Therefore, this conference will participate in building more connections between different experiences in order to think up the best alternatives to the global economic and political system in place and to the way of life brought about by global phenomena which do not work anymore. -

Philoséries episode 5. The philosophy of TV series

Comparatives Approaches: Pace, Contexts and Forms
The aim of this conference is to revisit the issue of the evolution of field systems on the long term in different regions and contexts. The discussion doesn’t concern how we can know field systems nor does it concern field systems themselves. The purpose of this conference is to study the impact of the contexts in which field systems evolve and to analyse how and at which pace the evolutions happen. The aim is to measure the impact of “crises” (of whatever nature: economic, political, environmental, etc.) on the evolution of field systems comparing the evolutions that can be observed in different regions and/or at different times. The main idea is to ask the question of how crises and political and economic incentives have an impact on the evolution of field systems in different historical contexts.

Charles Gide association study days

Sustainable mobilities in peri-urban areas?
Which lifestyles in the alter-urbain / suburban rural / citta diffusa / Zwischenstadt?
Can peri-urban areas become privileged spaces of adaptability to the economic, energy and climate crises of the 21st century? This is the question that will be discussed during the 2nd International Meeting of Mobile Lives Forum, January 24th and 25th, 2013 at the Maison Rouge (Paris 12ème). This Meeting seeks to question the image of peri-urban areas as unliveable, unbearable and without qualities or urbanness. Researchers, professionals and artists will defend their views of the different lifestyles these areas give birth to and potential they offer in terms of sustainable mobility. The audience will be invited to actively participate in the discussion. -

Beyond French New Languages for African Diasporic Literature
In recent years, Africans from former French colonies in both the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan regions have been settling in countries other than France and writing in languages other than French. This break with the colonial and postcolonial habits of la Françafrique – the familiar bind of metropole and colony – has been going on for years and is now ripe for analysis. Writing in German, Italian, Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, English, and other languages, these authors suggest new patterns of diasporic belonging and raise new questions about the postcolonial world. Issues of immigration, language choice, cosmopolitanism, global citizenship, and world literature will be addressed. -
