  Representing territories

  After three conferences that have successively sought to define and lay the foundations for territorial sciences, to go beyond disciplinary frontiers and boundaries, namely through interdisciplinary collaboration, and to explore territorial social demand, the 4^th CIST conference aims at mobilising the territorial sciences to address the question of representation. The objective of the conference, which will comprise 17 sessions, is to determine the contribution of the representational approach to the analysis of territories from a theoretical, methodological and empirical point of view.

  Governing by Prediction?

  Models, data and algorithms in and for governance

  Computation, be it based on statistical modeling or newest techniques of predictive analytics, holds the promise to be able to anticipate and act infallibly on futures and uncertain situations more generally. That the future is an object of governmental knowledge and action is nothing new though. What is the characteristic of today’s relationship with futures in policy making and action? To what extent do the means of computation, from statistical models to learning algorithms employed in predictive analytics change this relationship, and the collective capacity and legitimacy to engage with future, uncertain situations? How do technologies of prediction change policies? Who predicts, how, and with what effects on decisions and administration and on their politics? More generally, how do ways of predicting institutionalize, fail to do so or change?

Après tout, pour reprendre Elaine Ostry, comment et pourquoi user du « moment adolescent » pour devenir humain et interroger son humanité quand les adultes se préparent (et nous préparent) déjà à la posthumanité ? Quelle valeur prend l’âge métamorphique de l’adolescence à l’heure de la fin de l’homme qu’évoque Fukuyama en 2002 dans Our Posthuman Future ?

  For an epistemology of judiciary and police materiality - 15th-21st centuries

  L’équipe Damoclès/UNIGE prolonge le chantier ouvert par l’ouvrage collectif Bois, fers et papiers de Justice. Histoire matérielle du droit de punir(2012), avec une réflexion sur les pièces à conviction. Lambeau de vêtement, garrot souillé, lettre de suicidé ou monnaie falsifiée : les « choses banales » collectées durant l’enquête et produites au cours de l’instruction pour obtenir l’aveu ou convaincre le juge permettent de construire une histoire matérielle qui donne sens aux pratiques judiciaire et policières. L’approche interdisciplinaire privilégiée ici permet de penser le rôle, la fonction et l’usage des objets dans le procès pénal. Autour de la matérialité des pièces à conviction, ce chantier de recherche vise en définitive à penser le lent avènement du « paradigme indiciaire » dans la sphère pénale – un type de raisonnement fondé sur l’interprétation de traces, de fragments ou de signes dont les objets peuvent être les dépositaires.

  ‘Bad Kind’: The Dark Energy of the Literary System

  Bad literature is damned to oblivion. Focused mostly on valuable texts, our academic knowledge of the literary world is restricted to an extremely exclusive selection among its potential objects of research. Invariably, good taste filters literary materials in spite of its proven versatility in the course of history, and in spite of the instability not only of the canon of ‘great texts’, but also of the institutions in charge of its transmission. Consequently, texts of different sorts are discarded into darkness: failed and amateur works, venal writing, as well as literary forgeries and transgressions such as plagiarism. Bad literature includes most often pulp and popular literature (paraliterature) as well. Nevertheless, what if the rejected ‘bad taste’ was in fact similar to dark energy, which is invisible but probably predominant in the Universe?
