Cultural mobility around Shakespeare's Rome
Mapping race and nation through performance
This seminar asks participants to consider the implications of race or nation on stage, on screen, and in installations, happenings, or other performance venues in Shakespeare’s Roman plays and how perceptions of race shift in different venues, at different historical moments, and even from person to person.

Interrogating the “Trente glorieuses”
Models of Statehood in Postwar Europe
Understanding the Trente glorieuses not as a political-economic realitybut as a specific model of statehood with specific ideologicalunderpinnings opens a new way of looking at this period. At thisconference we want to reevaluate the political and intellectualpreconceptions on which the post-war decades are based and investigatetheir diffusion and circulation in democratic and non-democraticEuropean contexts. Focusing on the whole of Europe and not merely on astylized Western European model will allow us to broaden ourunderstanding of this time period and highlight concrete understandingsof statehood, the economy and democratic government. Examining thestatus, the adaptations and variations of the trente glorieuses modeland its synonyms across different political and social contexts inEurope after 1945 will allow us to reflect on the construction of thistime period in historical, political and economic thought.

Les effets de la première guerre mondiale sur les églises chrétiennes
11 November 1918 saw the end of the First World War, known at the time as the “Great War” (1914-1918) for its global scale, extreme destructivity and unseen casualty rates. On the one hand, wars evoke heroism and patriotism and bring people and groups to alter their mental boundaries and abilities. On the other hand, wars also elicit hatred, envy and violent behaviour, the settling of hidden accounts, the abandonment of ethical standards, and deep divisions and confrontations between families and societies. Since effects of the first world conflict were enormous and the shock waves were felt for years and generations to come, the question arises about the impact of the Great War on religion and the established churches.

Policing foreigners in European cities during the long eighteenth-century

Border towns and the resilience of frontiers in Early Modern cities
The session welcomes contributions that deal with questions of shifting borders and how these shifts impacted the political, social, economic or religious organization of a given city or cities in Europe. Papers may focus on questions of practice, concerning the resilience of local political elites and administrations or the local population. They may also deal with the contemporary considerations to change the space of both cities and states, political agendas, procedures to implement them and the 'instruments' to control these implementations.

Diffusion and reception from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern Period
The saints of Rome have always been among the most venerated and the most popular heavenly patrons in Christendom, grafting the noble air of universality and integration onto emerging Christian cultures. From the apostles and Early Christian martyrs through the Early Modern period and beyond, the textual and material dissemination of Roman saints made a significant impact on the rise of the cult of the saints. Post-Tridentine Roman cults spread by the Society of Jesus and the revival of catacomb cults brought a new wave in the world-wide cult of the saints of Rome in the early modern period.

Lived religion and everyday life through early modern catholic hagiographic material
We invite abstracts for contributions on the subject from scholars working with early modern (ca. 15th–18th centuries) hagiographic material, such as beatification and canonisation processes, other miracle accounts, art, vitae, and other spiritual (auto)biographies. The aim is to produce a high-quality collection of articles, which offers cutting-edge and fruitful insights into early modern social and cultural history, using hagiographic texts and art as sources. We especially welcome contributions, which have a sensitive approach to gender, age, health and social status.

The Role of Think Tanks and Technical Experts in Foreign and Security Policy
This international conference is part of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Rome's Istituto Affari Internazionali. Taking IAI's role as a starting point, we wish to look more carefully at the think tank model and its role. The IAI case study allows us to illustrate both the culture promoting model and the technical expertise model which plays a direct role in advising and shaping government policy. Starting from the analysis of think tanks, we can broaden our overview to include the role of experts in foreign and security policy in an attempt to pinpoint the common factors and specific characteristics connected with the role of experts.

Merchants, jurists and other "intermediate groups" in Early Modern Southern Europe
Merchants, farmers, jurists, clerks in large institutions, secretaries, independent landowners, local elites and highly sought master craftsmen, among many others, are individuals with an ambiguous social status. Looking at who was not born exactly noble, nor exactly commoner, but stood on the border between one world and the other, is one of the goals of this initiative. As part of a project developed in Portugal focusing on the Holy Office’s familiaturas, it will be held on September 16 and 17, 2015, a workshop at Escuela Española de Historia and Archaeological in Rome. Our aim is to select a total of 8 applicants, that will be joined by 4 guest speakers, for a joint reflection on the dynamics and profiles of ‘intermediate groups’, as well as on the methodologies for their study in Early Modern Times.

Prime Minister and Patron : Heinrich Count von Brühl (1700-1763)
International Conference on the 250th anniversary of the death of Heinrich Count Brühl
The 250th anniversary of the death of Heinrich Count von Brühl will be taken as an opportunity to assess the field of research on this controversial valued patron and collector, and to identify further areas of investigation. A central point of inquiry of this conference is Brühl’s patronage: Brühl built up not only numerous collections, but was also an important patron for domestic and foreign painters, sculptors and architects. Brühl used a network of specialized art agents and artists for internationally competitive extension and development of its own and the court collections. The aim of this conference will be to carry out a comparative and synthetic analysis of both unpublished sources and material that has not yet been systematically considered.

Tracking Innovation through Grey Literature
Fourteenth International Conference on Grey Literature
Innovation is a process manifested in and through grey literature. Both have their origins in knowledge generation and both demonstrate value for government, academics, business and industry through their uses and applications. In a way, innovation and grey literature are two sides of the same coinage. Innovation is the catalyst for positive change and grey literature is the measure of benchmarks in the further process of research and development. The goal of the Fourteenth International Conference on Grey Literature seeks to track the process of innovation by tracing the research life cycle and observing its convergence in the field of grey literature. -
