Working all night

Modernity, night shifts and the temporal organization of labour across political and economic regimes

Issues we would like contributors to address in the workshop are: How did the temporal organization of labour and the night shift evolve in different places and different times? How has the night shift been perceived and ‘lived’ by workers who have engaged in this activity? Who are, and were, the workers involved in night work? To what extent has the ‘night shift’ been carried out by specific groups and/or categories (such as unskilled workers, women, migrants, etc). To what extent has the night shift been seen as compatible or clashing with with key social, human and labour rights? How has night work been legitimized, contested, and negotiated by different stakeholders at all levels of the economic hierarchy? And, what are the threats to well-being of night workers due to lack of regulations to night work (in global cities)?

World Conference on Complex Systems 4th Edition Special Sessions

After the success of the previous editions, we are very glad to announce the WCCS19, “4^thEdition of World conference on Complex Systems “. The WCCS19 will be organized by “Moroccan Society of Complex Systems”, “Ibn Zohr University” and National College of IT (ENSIAS, Mohamed V Souissi University) in partnership with IEEE Moroccan section and “International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Science” during April 22-25, 2019 in Ouarzazate-Morocco. The WCCS19 will provide a high-level international forum for researchers and Ph. D. students who will present recent research results, address new challenges and discuss trends in the area of complex systems and interdisciplinary science. The aims of the conference are focused on the debate about the most relevant methodologies and approaches to understanding, modelling, simulating, predicting, evaluating and mastering the Societal, Ecological, Biological and Engineered Complex Systems.

Les XXI^e ateliers de l'Association des jeunes études indiennes (AJEI) se tiendront à Delhi du 22 eu 25 avril 2019, dans les locaux du Centre des sciences humaines sur le thème de l'intermédiation et du pouvoir. L'AJEI est une association de jeunes chercheur·e·s sur l'Inde, qui depuis plus de 20 ans organise des evènements scientifiques permettant de visibiliser sa recherche, d'en discuter, de la confronter à l'avis de chercheur·e·s seniors. L'appel à contributions ci-dessous donne les axes centraux mais nous restons ouverts à toute contribution recoupant la thèmatique et se basant sur des données empiriques solides.

Despite decades of research on disaster risk and perception, studies on actual damages and responses after disasters, decision-making tools, and actionable knowledge of the actual behaviour of the populations are still a challenge. Uncertainty derives from lack of information, lack of trust, alternatives, previous experience, but also segregation, oppression, etc. This conference is addressing the knowledge gap between risk perception, evacuation, response, and adaptation behaviour. It aims to build a multidisciplinary panoramic European view.

The conference organisers invite presentations on economy and memory, in particular, but not limited to the context of post-socialist economic transformations in East-Central Europe, as well as their interactions with parallel economic processes in other parts of the world. They may be based on a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including history, sociology, anthropology, economics, literary and film studies, and others. While the focal point for most economic transformations in question is the 1990s, we invite speakers to address these changes in the context of their longer histories with attention to the genealogy of shifts in economic thought through the 20th century and related memory processes.

The progressive demolition of welfare systems, the job precariousness, and new consumer lifestyles have generated different responses in terms of regulation of the admissions of foreign citizens in search of a job and their management (housing issues, access to health care, etc.). Both with regard to organization of forms of protection of immigrants in the exercise of theirs fundamental rights, especially in cases of serious discrimination and exploitation (immigrant associations, trade union action, etc.).

Governance of food chains and consumption dynamics: what are the impacts on food security and sustainability?

170th EAAE Seminar

The seminar will explore consumption behavior and food chain dynamics as the result of the capabilities, strategies and environment of stakeholders in the food chain, including consumers. Consumption dynamics mostly refer to food transition with a rising intake of meat, sugar, fats and processed food in some regions and consumers’ groups, but also patterns of resistance in others. These go hand-in-hand with concentration trends in distribution, vertical integration and innovations in logistics, quality and labelling at various levels, as they may be promoted by SMEs as well as corporations. Particular attention will be paid to the issue of how public and private strategies and governance can gear these dynamics towards increased food security and sustainability by changing the stakeholders’ range of options in terms of the diversity and affordability of proposed food items and formats. Food security is considered through the traditional dimensions of availability, access and quality (including nutritional balance), while food sustainability encompasses the limitation of negative impacts on the environment (depletion of natural resources, health, employment and income.

Anglo-american and francophone environmental justice approaches have largely evolved in parallel, both conceptually and politically. While anglophone EJ scholars have recently called for enlarging the conceptual underpinnings of environmental justice studies, ‘francophone’ influences have largely remained a blind spot in the literature. This panel focusses on the distinctiveness (or lack thereof) of French/francophone approaches to environmental justice. We hope to move this conversation forward by establishing cross-Channel connections between academic environmental justice networks in the UK and in France.

This workshop will be the occasion for historians of thought, economists, econometricians, social scientists, specialists in economic methodology or epistemology, and economic or environmental historians to discuss about the articulation between theories, models and facts (broadly speaking) in the past and present environmental and energy economics literature. Prof. Arthur Petersen (UCL) will give a plenary talk about the interdisciplinary dialogue for the elaboration of Integrated Assessment Models. A roundtable will also be taking place with three eminents scholars: Roger Guesnerie (Collège de France), Kirsten Halsnæs (DTU) and Jean-Charles Hourcade (CNRS-CIRED). Around 20 presentations by young and senior scholars from Europe and America are expected, including preliminary results from the #BNREproject.
