Crossing Borders: Intellectuals of the Right and Politics in Europe and Latin America

    Transnational Perspectives

During the interwar period, authoritarian movements and regimes of the right - both of the "old" authoritarian and of the "new" radical varieties - professed their faith in national values but at the same time saw themselves as national agents of an otherwise international intellectual and political wave. Starting from the mid-1920s, a growing sense of shared goals, commonality of vision, and sense of history-making mission led them to draw on each other for inspiration and support. It soon became clear that these movements and regimes embraced ideas from each other, actively studying each other’s discourses and initiatives in the political field. The conference aims to promote a different understanding of the role of intellectuals of the interwar right who perceived themselves as transnational agents “at the service of an idea”.

    Comics and Memory

“Memory is tabooed as unpredictable, unreliable, irrational”, deplored Adorno more than half a century ago. Although nowadays the study of memory has established itself, memory remains an untamable beast, broad and interdisciplinary in its scope. This conference seeks to understand memory, and more specifically the relationship between comics and memory, by welcoming papers on the following three lines of inquiry: personal memory, memory of the medium and collective memory.

    Digital Humanities 2016 pre-conference Workshop

The 1st edition of the workshop “A place for places” will hold in conjunction with the “2016 Digital Humanities conference” in Kraków, Poland. The present workshop aims to investigate the latest developments of geo-historical gazetteers and their impact in natural language processing and digital humanities studies. In particular the workshop will deal with crucial problems concerning the geo-spatial models of representation for ancient places, and the management of temporal information for geographic features in general. Current projects concerning the publication of geo-historical data as Linked Open Data, as well as their exploitation for annotating and enriching texts will also be discussed, alongside with more theoretical issues on vocabularies and ontologies.

Protest in French and Francophone Arts and Culture

Society for French Studies Postgraduate Conference 2016

Protest is an intrinsic part of human culture, which enables subjects to express their dissatisfaction with existing social structures and hegemonic hierarchies of power. Protests have occurred across time periods and contexts, and have taken numerous different forms, ranging from personal expressions of discontent to united movements for revolutionary change. Protests can be individual or collective, personal or political, spontaneous or carefully planned, but they are generally orientated towards destabilising the status quo and establishing new modes of existence. Over the ages, political, social and cultural protests have successfully toppled authoritarian regimes, exposed and confronted dominant imbalances of power, and ameliorated conditions for disenfranchised members of society.

    IV congreso internacional de mitocrítica

    Mito y emociones

Representing the Urban Underbelly in the Nineteenth Century

Both exhibitions explore the depiction of women in the margins of urban life – the prostitute, the model, working (class) women, and the women of the entertainment industry.

From Xenakis to the present: the Continuum in music and architecture

    Continuum 2016

Since the Classical era and the Middle Ages, and in particular since Plato’s Timeus, the concept of continuum has preoccupied thinkers. In the early 20th century, this notion was reactivated by the theory of relativity as well as other theories such as the uncertainty principle, changing our perception of the world, and consequently artistic discourse. We propose to examine where we are today in terms of the concept of continuum, both in theory and in practice. An interdisciplinary approach will enable us to evaluate the relevancy of this notion, comparing and contrasting it with other methodologies, during this international conference.

Seeing Through? The Materiality of Dioramas (1560-2010)

Dioramas are at the crossroads of artistic, scientific and cultural practices. They bring together painters, sculptors, scientists, and collectors, thus providing an opportunity to reflect on the polyvalence of these actors and the definition of their expertise. To date, these installations have been studied by scholars from various disciplines, mainly as side topics. Media historians have considered them primarily as proto-cinematic, whereas within the fields of anthropology, museum studies and postcolonial studies, they are generally analyzed as displays that reflect political taxonomies and stereotyped representations.

    Staging American Bodies

For this seventh International Symposium on Staging America, we invite scholars to explore the various ways in which American bodies have been staged and represented throughout history and through various media. From P.T. Barnum’s freak shows to modern-day tattoo conventions, from Carson McCullers’ and Flannery O’Connor’s grotesque characters to twenty-first century sideshows, bodies have always been a source of both attraction and repulsion. The fascination triggered by deformities – whether natural or self-inflicted – reveals as much about Americans’ conceptions of normality, hence of identity, as it does about the nature of the body itself.

    Lifelike

During the eighteenth century, a range of artistic productions aimed to simulate motion and life, at the same time that individuals became ever more preoccupied with performing or embodying static works of art. This issue of Journal18 aims to explore such hybrid creations and the boundaries they challenged between animate and inanimate form, art and technology, nature and artifice, the living and the dead. Echoing contemporary discussions about vraisemblance and verisimilitude, as well as mimesis and imitation, in eighteenth-century artistic literature, these preoccupations also related to larger philosophical and scientific debates about matter, mankind and machines at a global level. What was considered “lifelike” in the eighteenth century? How did artistic practices engage this notion and participate in redefining it?

The pleasure of music and dance in the brain

    Interdisciplinary conversations

This two-day symposium will bring together researchers and practitioners with expertise in music, dance and the brain, in order to initiate an interdisciplinary conversation on the fundamental role of pleasure of music and dance in human life. The study of music and dance is well established within the social sciences and the humanities, and has started to become studied in neuroscience in recent years, but these different approaches are rarely brought together in a constructive conversation. The main aim is to explore different scholarly perspectives on the role of pleasure and emotions in music, dance and the brain by bringing together these scholarly perspectives with insights into the practice of dance and music.

Crossing the past: Medieval (and Early Modern) Brno and Olomouc in transition

The Summer School "Crossing the past" aims for a discussion about different (national art historical narratives of a specific late medieval corpus in Moravia. It provides the opportunity for young international scholars to meet the material reality of one of the most important medieval centers of the transalpine Europe, often marginalized in research, not only due to the linguistic barrier. The goal of the school is a close and direct examination of the on-site monuments and art objects, and secondly, a critical reflection about the diverse narratives and meta-narratives existing about these monuments.

    1st International Workshop

Scientists of many different disciplines are involved in the study of relics and kindred artefacts, but till now there was no real forum for these people to exchange ideas and discuss methods. Therefore the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels) is organizing a two-day workshop on the scientific study of relics. During this meeting we want to give analytical scientists, textile specialists, conservators, anthropologists, historical researchers, people involved in 3D reconstruction as well as radiocarbon dating specialists a forum to exchange ideas about relics.
