L'approche spatiale et cartographique peut-elle la renouveler ? Autour d'Artlas (artlas.ens.fr), le colloque de Purdue (West Lafayette, USA, 27-29 septembre 2012) invite les chercheurs à réfléchir aux stratégies possibles pour étudier les processus de circulation et de globalisation, sans laisser de côté les questions d'ethnicité ou de nationalité, échappant ainsi autant aux limites de la simple narration qu'à celles d'un globalisme aveugle.

  Ding, ding, ting: Objects as cultural mediators. German, Dutch and Nordic language areas

  Le colloque propose de croiser les fils de deux traditions théoriques, la théorie des transferts culturels, élaborée par Michel Espagne et Michael Werner dans les années 1980, qui a donné lieu ensuite à divers prolongements (histoire croisée, recherche sur les phénomènes de circulation, de réseau, d’interculturalité, d’hybridation…), et celle des Material Culture Studies.Il s’intéressera aux objets matériels, d’un point de vue historique, culturel, ethnologique, anthropologique, littéraire, linguistique, philosophique ou esthétique, dans leurs manifestations concrètes et leurs représentations discursives, visuelles, plastiques, ou textuelles, dans la mesure où ces objets circulent entre plusieurs cultures, entre deux pays (ou plus) des espaces néerlandophones, nordiques ou germanophones, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.

  Narrating War

  Words and images of war from street singers to the internet

  One of the most significant aspects of recent historiographical work on war has been the attention paid to the cultural representations of conflict: the visual representation of war and its memory, language and rhetoric. This historiographical approach towards the subject of war has brought new attention to ways of representing war and the languages used to recount it. The First World War is usually seen as marking a new era; the unusual nature of the violence of this conflict, with the “disappearance of battle” and the mechanization of death, signalling the end of war as a place for generating men’s honour. But other moments in the history of western culture have seen the paradigm of war change in the accounts and narratives of contemporaries. Among these, the period of the Italian Wars of the sixteenth century, when the image of war transformed from a theatre of conflict between chivalric heroes to the anonymous encounters of armies.

  Flashbacks. Nostalgic media and mediated forms of nostalgia

  Can media really be nostalgic? Which specific forms of nostalgia appear in contemporary society and why? Can people be nostalgic if they did not experience the past they pretend being nostalgic of? What kind of politics of nostalgia exist? What is the impact of nostalgia on the media market and its influence on economy? Finally, given the arbitrary (?) use of the past in all its imaginable variations and cultural systems, is it still possible to use the word nostalgia or should there be a neologism describing the transformation of the past in(to) the digital era? Could it even be possible to be simply nostalgic of nostalgia; finally describing the eternal research for (lost) identity? This international conference aims to explore nostalgia as a (mass) media phenomena and also seeks for contributions that treat any other mediated forms of nostalgia.

  Nouvelles Vues est à la recherche de contributions originales pouvant enrichir son premier numéro dédié à la culture visuelle populaire et à ce qui est communément appelé le « pré-cinéma ». Il ne s’agira pas de voir comment ces pratiques et dispositifs préparent le cinéma, mais bien de réfléchir aux liens complexes et multiples qui existent entre ces différentes formations culturelles. Les contributions rassemblées au sein de ce numéro pourront aborder l’évolution du paysage médiatique jusqu’au tournant du 20e siècle au Québec, ou encore les relations entre les pratiques associées à la culture visuelle populaire et celles relevant des « vues animées » (jusqu’en 1915).

In the context of its M4HUMAN programme (“Mobility for experienced researchers in historical humanities and Islamic studies”), the Foundation’s Office welcomes applications detailing research plans in the field of the historical humanities or on a topic within the special research programme “Islam, the modern nation state and transnational movements” supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.

  While contemporary grumblings about hospital food have become the quintessential hospital complaint, it is undeniable that a clean, warm bed, rest and the provision of food and drink, rather than medicines and therapies have always greatly increased hospital patients’ chances of recovery. Indeed diet has from the time of Galen been a central part of medical therapy. However, even if central to the day-to-day routine of hospitals, workhouses and asylums, food and drink continue to be overlooked in historical accounts of hospitalisation. This conference aims to foreground the role of food and drink in health care institutions in the past.

  Irish self-portraits: the artist in curved mirrors

  Si l’Irlande peut se targuer de posséder une collection nationale d’autoportraits, l’art de l’autoportrait en littérature et dans les arts visuels reste encore largement inexploré. Certes, la pratique de l’autoportrait marque une tentative de plonger au fond de soi-même mais la représentation qui en découle n’est ni simple ni directe. Les artistes mettent en scène leur propre identité et leur propre personnage, se jouant de la célébrité et de leur rayonnement d’artiste, montrant de l’irrespect ou du mépris pour toute forme de canon ou d’usage. Le miroir dans lequel l’artiste se contemple est ainsi souvent un miroir courbe. L’objet de cette conférence, organisée par le Centre Interlangues TIL de l’université de Bourgogne, est d’analyser les diverses stratégies à l’œuvre dans l’art de l’autoportrait.

  Pieds Noirs and German Expellees in a Comparative Perspective

  L’Allemagne et la France ont intégré des millions d’émigrés après la seconde guerre mondiale et la décolonisation, que ce soient les expulsés des territoires de l’Est ou les rapatriés européens d’Algérie. En dépit de parallèles notables, les deux processus ont généralement été étudiés isolément. Le colloque international propose de les mettre systématiquement en perspective et se concentre sur les questions suivantes : quelle signification les territoires perdus avaient-ils pour la France et l’Allemagne ? Quel a été l’impact de l’intégration des expulsés et des pieds-noirs dans les deux sociétés ? Comment a-t-on commémoré l’exode, l’exil et l’expulsion, à quels conflits et controverses ont-ils donné lieu à l’échelle nationale et internationale ?
