Class, Gender and Peacebuilding in Peru (1961-2014)

Según el historiador Franklin Pease, ‘hacer una historia de la subversión en el Perú con elemental seriedad, requiere disponer de información confiable, casi nunca al alcance del investigador’. Trabajar sobre grupos alzados en armas que se organizaron en el marco de la 'lucha de clases' desde los años 1960, es tarea difícil en la medida en que significa trabajar sobre la clandestinidad. Nombrar, investigar o repensar a grupos como el ‘Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso’ (PCP-SL) y el Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru (MRTA) supone un peligro para el investigador: ser llamado ‘terrorista’ es común en un medio donde el discurso oficial y el discurso académico han confluido para dar una versión única. Maritza Felices-Luna y Anouk Guiné los invita a someter un capitulo para el libro colectivo que sigue el coloquio internacional « Clase, Género y Construccion de la Paz en el Peru (1961-2014) » que se llevo a cabo en Ayacucho (Peru) en julio 2014.

Grupos intermédios nos domínios portugueses, sécs. XVI-XVIII

Revista de História (Universidade de São Paulo)

A Revista de História da Universidade de São Paulo convida autores para apresentação de artigos destinados a um dossiê sobre grupos intermédios nos séculos XVI a XVIII. Durante esses séculos os grupos intermédios esforçaram-se por afirmar-se no universo rural e ajudaram a dar consistência aos núcleos urbanos do mundo português, correspondendo a uma acrescida demanda por serviços especializados e assegurando o alargamento das funções de representação da Coroa e das atividades da Igreja. Muito embora quase inexistentes em termos jurídicos ou normativos, esses grupos eram, de fato, reconhecidos como uma espessa e vibrante camada "mediana", assinalada em testemunhos nacionais e estrangeiros. Procura-se agora melhor distinguir as suas especificidades, seus mecanismos de constituição e o seu efetivo protagonismo na dinâmica social.

Six doctoral studentships in History of Europe from the Middle Ages to Present Time

The PhD in History of Europe intends to promote research on European history, its national specificities and common processes. Special focus will be devoted to political, religious, cultural, economic, and social changes that have marked the European continent from the Middle Ages to present time, as well as the study and critical research on the issues and problems of traditional historiography (organisations and institutions, regional dimensions, behaviours, attitudes, religion, culture, etc.), and the most recent historiographical trends (world history, trans-national history, and cultural experiences).

Regional producers or global players? The internationalization of companies in the 19th and 20th centuries

An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers. The Revue Études Canadiennes / Canadian Studies seeks contributions in English dealing with Alice Munro’s short fiction writing (particularly Dance of the Happy Shades).

Travail et société : la part du féminin

En France, l’histoire des femmes a connu un grand essor depuis une trentaine d’années, mais les recherches sont concentrées sur l’Occident. Or, dans le domaine très vaste de l’histoire mésopotamienne, il existe de nombreuses études ponctuelles en histoire des femmes et du genre, mais encore peu de synthèses. L’histoire économique est, par ailleurs, un domaine bien représenté en assyriologie, du fait de la conservation de dizaines de milliers de tablettes d’argile enregistrant des opérations administratives, des contrats, ainsi que des actes relevant du droit familial. En dépit de cette richesse, l’histoire du travail est restée un parent pauvre de l’histoire économique. Le colloque a pour ambition d’envisager les occupations économiques dans lesquelles interviennent des femmes, dans une perspective du genre, sur les trois millénaires d’histoire proche-orientale, en faisant participer une trentaine de chercheurs de divers pays.

Le cinquième de ces laboratoires se déroulera à Rīga le 5 septembre 2014 et explorera le thème suivant : la cohérence des espaces intérieurs et extérieurs dans l’architecture Art nouveau européenne.

The Council for European Studies (CES) calls for proposals for its 22nd International Conference of Europeanists is organized around the theme "Contradictions: Envisioning European Futures". The CES invites proposals for panels, roundtables, book discussions, and individual papers that consider the many potential futures emerging from the European crisis. We encourage proposals in the widest range of disciplines, and, in particular, proposals that combine disciplines, nationalities, and generations.

Doctoral researchers for the project Presbyters in the late antique West

Institute of History (University of Warsaw) is looking for two doctoral researchers who will join the team working on the project Presbyters in the late antique West (200-700 AD) run by Robert Wiśniewski. Their job will consist in collecting the evidence for a prosopographical database and conducting, within the project, their own research which will lead to completing the doctoral dissertation (in 4.5 years). The successful candidates will be enrolled in the doctoral programme and awarded a scholarship of 2000 Polish Zloty per month (initially for 2 years, extendable for another 2.5 years).

Cosmopolitanism and Europe

A possible convergence ?

Over the last twenty years, numerous essays (theoretical and empirical) have been published on the sociology of Europe and of cosmopolitanism. In contrast, research on possible ties between the two has been more rare. If cosmopolitan sociology can be considered as an attempt to understand how individuals, social groups and institutions deal with the challenges of ever more transnational social processes, then the European issue can be fully inserted within such an approach. On the two distinct planes of socialisation of individuals and of their governance, Europe represents in miniature a field of observation of the ways in which citizens and institutions are dealing with situations that require conceptual frameworks and analyses of social reality that go beyond the traditional sociology of Nation-States. It might therefore be opportune to attempt to understand such transnational dynamics by examining how internal and external, political and symbolic borders uniting groups (from micro- to macro-scales) become nowadays paradoxically ever more open and ever more closed. In Gerard Delanty’s view, « the cosmopolitanism imagination occurs when and wherever new relations between self, other and world develop in moments of openness ».

How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?

Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?

Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

Vivre, consommer et agir dans une Palestine glocale

La réalité palestinienne, marquée par le conflit, a le plus souvent été analysée au seul prisme de sa spécificité politique ou culturelle. Or, de nouvelles manières de vivre, de consommer et d’agir inscrites dans un registre global ont vu le jour ces dernières années et sont largement restées inexplorées. Le colloque réunira essentiellement des chercheurs et doctorants en sciences sociales et humaines travaillant sur la Palestine mais sont aussi sollicitées des recherches sur d’autres terrains (Maghreb / Moyen-Orient / Europe) dans une dimension comparative. Ce colloque entend par ailleurs confronter des approches différentes : entre art et science, recherche et action, il fera dialoguer les sciences sociales avec les travaux d’artistes, d’architectes, les pensées et modes d’action de collectifs militants et citoyens.

Income Contingent Loans

As a part of national financial arrangements for higher education, income contingent student loans have been implemented in many countries (including Australia, Sweden, South Africa, England and Thailand, among others). These schemes are generally collected through income taxation systems and are repaid only when current income exceeds a specified level. This workshop aims at gathering internationally recognized experts on this issue, as well as French practitioners within higher education and within public policy, During the sessions, the results of high-quality applied research will be presented. The policy implications of these results will be discussed in a round table.

Emerging Moral Economies in Southeast Asia. Exploring the Symbolic & Material Dimensions of “New Economies”

Like other regions of the world, South-East Asia has, since the mid-1980s, seen the rise of a new “spirit of capitalism”, linked to the growth of a middle class. Various religious mass-organizations have developed new discourses on wealth and innovative techniques of financing. At their helm, we often find charismatic figures who are responding to the demands of those in search of meaning in an increasingly de-structured modern urban life setting. In doing so, these actors operate on a “spiritual marketplace” characterized by great fluidity and competition. This conference is to look at the different ways through which tensions between religious ethics and economic rationalization are negotiated, both ideologically and institutionally.

Bilan et perspectives

In 1980, François Furet established the first visiting chair in North American studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in partnership with the French-American Foundation. Yet, it was not until 1984 and the election of Jean Heffer as permanent full professor that the Center for North American Studies (CENA) came into being. Despite pioneering efforts in some English departments and the creation of the first university chair in North American history at the Sorbonne in 1967, there was significant disparity between the importance of the USA in the contemporary world and the weakness of North American studies in France. Over the last thirty years and under the supervision of Jean Heffer and François Weil, the CENA has become one of the leading institutions for North American scholarship in France and Europe.

À l’occasion du centenaire de la première guerre mondiale, le numéro 6 d’Arabian Humanities portera sur l’histoire de la péninsule Arabique, de la mer Rouge et du Golfe à l’époque de la guerre. En prenant pour objet les circulations dans / vers / depuis la mer Rouge, la péninsule Arabique et le Golfe, ce numéro veut remettre en question la position périphérique et isolée de la région pendant le guerre, examiner les réorganisations spatiales et territoriales qui ont touché les mouvements et les échanges, et accorder plus d’attention aux liens de la région avec le reste du monde. Quels échanges, par exemple, peut-on identifier à cette époque à la fois dans la région et dans son contexte mondial ? Dans quelle mesure la guerre toucha-t-elle ces circulations dans une région où les limites et les frontières restaient poreuses, mal définies, et disputées ?

Edith Wharton and the Great War in France

The talk is about Edith Wharton's commitment to Paris and to France from 1914 to 1918. A wealthy and famous expatriate American novelist, who had been living mainly in Paris since 1907, she used her fame, money, writing and influence in the service of France and dedicated her considerable energies (Henry James called her the great "generalissima") to persuading her American countrymen to enter the war. In the anniversary year of the outbreak of the First World War, Edith Wharton's role in war-time Franco-American relations makes a dramatic story, well worth reconsidering.

TRICUD conference

The TRICUD Final International Conference on "Transnationalism, Identities’ Dynamics and Cultural Diversification in Urban Post-migratory Situations" will take place at the University of Liège on 14, 15 and 16 May 2014. It aims at presenting the main findings of the multidisciplinary research programme TRICUD (2010-2014) involving the following research centres: CEDEM, CLEO and Pôle SuD. TRICUD aims to better understand how migration transforms both sending societies in the South and receiving societies in the North. The conference will include keynote speakers Nina GLICK-SCHILLER (University of Manchester) and Steve VERTOVEC (Max Planck Institute).
