The advent of the Web is one of the defining technological events of the twentieth-first century, yet its impact on the fundamental questions of philosophy has not yet been widely explored, much less systematized. We hope to provoke the properly philosophical question of whether there is a consistent new branch or practice of philosophy that can weave these changes to technology and society into a coherent whole and have a real social impact.

Steps to a multi-disciplinary analysis of scales

The University of Chicago and the French Development Agency (AFD) are pleased to announce a conference to be held in Paris on 14th and 15th June 2012. The conference will be devoted to exploring the analysis of the global impacts of local politics and power relations.We call for papers that investigate domestic power relations, how local interest games generate international impacts, through what channels and mechanisms these impacts emerge, how local politics is redefined by global networks and discourses and whether current forms of international cooperation and global governance regimes are well or ill-adapted to these challenges. Along with a short C.V., proposals for contributions to the conference should be sent before 30th January 2012.

L’axe de recherche « Modernités » s’attache à étudier la construction des modernités européennes, dans toutes leurs manifestations culturelles. Plusieurs directions de travail permettent de réfléchir à la constitution de ce qu’on a appelé la première modernité, entre Renaissance et Lumières. Les dimensions littéraire, politique, philosophique et religieuse font l’objet de recherches interdisciplinaires, qui peuvent s’étendre à des phénomènes de modernité à d’autres périodes. Les liens entre l’Antiquité et la culture de la première modernité sont aussi examinés, en littérature comme en philosophie.

If today, freedom can be conceived as a physiological property of human being, such conception trivializes the history of freedom as a philosophical concept. Throughout the history of philosophy, freedom has always been discussed in much larger contexts: If, for example, freedom consists in acting freely in causally determined nature, a conception of human freedom arises only from metaphysical presupposition. The same holds true for an understanding of human freedom as something realizing itself in history, as something that is only possible through grace, or as something that must be won against dominant interpretations of self and world. The concept of freedom is thus not only a topic in practical and theoretical philosophy, but can be understood as a connection of both–and be it in a tension between the two. We are calling for contributions both in the history of philosophy and in a systematic approach to the topic.

This conference aims to gather a set of contributions to the question of the collective subject of politics. The conference welcomes papers that present theoretical contributions to the debate as well as case studies gathered from any geographical space and from all historical periods. It is mainly – but in no way exclusively – directed at researchers from different disciplinary areas working on political thought and social movements. The working language of the conference is English. Those interested in presenting a paper at the conference should submit an abstract no longer than 300 words before the 31st of December 2011.

Deuxièmes rencontres internationales de l'art et du design

Appel à contribution. Les deuxièmes Rencontres internationales de l’art et du design, organisées par l’École supérieure d’art et de design de Reims, auront cette année pour thème l’autoproduction. Mettant en cause des modèles de développement, de consommation et de représentation de l’industrie à grande échelle, de plus en plus de designers choisissent – ou sont contraints - de se (ré)approprier le territoire de la production. Diverses et variées, leurs démarches se posent comme des systèmes d’adaptation à la crise économique et industrielle de ces dernières années, aussi bien que comme des prises de positions éthiques, esthétiques et politiques. Ces Rencontres seront l’occasion de circonscrire les enjeux théoriques et plastiques de l’autoproduction dans le contexte socioéconomique et culturel actuel.

Le département de sociologie de l'université d'État de Tambov (Russie) organise les 7 et 8 novembre 2011 son quatrième colloque international sur internet. Cette année, les échanges porteront autour du sujet : « Sociétés, communautés, personnalité : à la recherche du monde éternel ». Face au bien connu jugement hâtif sur l'absence de dimension historique en sociologie, nous sommes invités, au contraire, à inscrire ou à repenser le travail du sociologue dans une optique de long terme. Droits de l'homme, inégalités, place de l'individu, et même croyances religieuses : ces thématiques dont la sociologie, voire les sciences sociales en général, sont coutumières, s'éclairent d'une manière nouvelle une fois replacées dans le temps long de l'histoire, et notamment face à ce qui peut en être la finalité, exclue du champ scientifique et donc son impensé majeur, à savoir la quête d'un « monde éternel ».

French Theory : réception dans les arts visuels aux États-Unis entre 1965 et 1995

Nombreux sont les artistes américains, actifs dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, à avoir nourri leur réflexion et leur pratique des apports de la philosophie, des études littéraires et des sciences sociales. À cet égard, un certain nombre d'auteurs français ont bénéficié très tôt d'un intérêt soutenu. La perspective de ce colloque sera l'étude de la réception de cette « pensée française » dans le domaine des arts visuels à partir de 1965 et jusqu'en 1995, veille d'un mouvement d'évaluation critique de l'influence de ces auteurs sur la pensée intellectuelle américaine, initiée entre autres par la désormais fameuse « affaire Sokal ».

Subjectivité et sociabilité dans les traditions arabe et latine

The general theme of the workshop is to explore the notions of subjectivity in the contexts of moral and political philosophy from Late Antiquity to Early Modern period. In more precise terms, the workshop concentrates on the various ways in which human subjectivity figures in discussions concerning human sociability, and how the conceptions of human experience, agency, consciousness, self-consciousness, emotions, and intersubjectivity appear in political contexts. By addressing the interplay between political philosophy and philosophical psychology in different historical and intellectual contexts, the workshop will further philosophical understanding of the nature of subjectivity within social context and elucidateaffiliations and parallel developments within different traditions.

Fictions, immersions et univers virtuels

Ces colloques et recherches qui lui sont associées ont pour objectifs de clarifier les rapports entre trois situations d’immersion : 1) l’immersion du sujet en situation réelle, 2) l’immersion du sujet (lecteur ou spectateur) en situation fictionnelle, 3) l’immersion du sujet en situation virtuelle. Plus précisément, ce sont les situations d’interactions entre ces trois sortes d’univers qui seront abordées car chacun désormais ne peut se concevoir de façon autonome. Mais ce seront aussi les modalités des entrées et sorties entre situation immersive et situation non immersive qu’il faudra envisager pour chacun de ces modes d’immersion.
