  D.H. Lawrence and the Anticipation of the Ecocritical Turn

  D.H. Lawrence has often been viewed as a post-romantic nature writer. Instead of looking back to the 19th century writers who influenced him, we propose in the 2019 Conference to consider how his literary practice and the philosophy that underlies it herald the ecocritical turn of the late 20th century. Broadly speaking, ecocriticism focuses on the study of the relationship between man and the natural environment, doing so from an interdisciplinary  perspective. It is concerned both with the protection of the environment and with the destiny of man, or of "the human", in the geological era called the Anthropocene. Ecocriticism is a broad term, pointing to innumerable trends: ecopoetry, ecophilosophy (see Guattari's ecsophy), ecoethics, ecoethology, ecopolitics, ecofeminism, etc.

  Les échanges humanistes dans les provinces du Nord pendant la Renaissance

  Premier colloque international de Saint-Omer

  Le colloque international de Saint-Omer est organisé conjointement par le Centre de Recherche et d’Études Histoire et Sociétés (EA 4027 CREHS - université d’Artois), et la Communauté d’Agglomération du Pays de Saint-Omer (CAPSO) représentée par sa Bibliothèque et son Université Populaire. Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire : La Renaissance dans les Provinces du Nord, coordonné depuis 2015 par Charles GiryDeloison et Laurence Baudoux, et dans la continuité des journées d’études annuelles organisées au sein de ce programme à l’université d’Artois. En ce sens, le propos de cette rencontre est d’interroger les diverses manifestations de la Renaissance dans les Anciens Pays Bas aux XVIème et XVIIème siècles, touchant les principaux champs des humanités (philosophie, lettres et arts), et en se concentrant plus particulièrement sur les échanges, rencontres et associations entre les différents acteurs de cette renaissance culturelle.

  Ordonner l’Église (II)

  Communautés cléricales et communautés monastiques dans le monde carolingien (VIIIe-Xe siècle)

  Ce colloque entend appréhender les évolutions des communautés cléricales et monastiques d’époque carolingienne afin d’interroger les effets concrets de la réforme de 816-819 et la notion même d’institutionnalisation de l’Église, dont on fait souvent un des traits caractéristiques de la période. Il s’agira d’observer de quelle manière étaient organisées ces institutions, entre le VIII^e et la fin du X^e siècle, sans préjuger d’une rupture en un temps donné, afin de mieux mesurer ce qui caractérisait les différents types de communautés (monastiques et canoniques / canoniales) et à quel point l'effort réformateur mené à l’initiative de la cour constitue ou non une inflexion majeure dans l’histoire de l’organisation de l’Église et des communautés ecclésiastiques.

  (Re) thinking translations

  Methodologies, objectives, perspectives

  In the last four decades, scholars have begun to go beyond the traditional perspective of linguistic and literary studies, and to consider the translations as cultural practices and the result of various processes of cultural and intellectual “negotiation” between two different contexts. In recent years also historians have progressively started to take a close interest in translations as sources to investigate the ways in which knowledge and ideas were constructed, disseminated, re-elaborated and assimilated in new cultural, social and political contexts. The aims of this international conference is to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue on these problems, bringing together scholars, graduate students and early career researchers from Translation Studies, History, History of Book, History of Science, Literary Studies and related disciplines who are interested in discussing methodologies, objectives and perspectives in the study of translations.

  Myth and Audiovisual Creation

  V Congreso Internacional de Mitocrítica "Mito y creación audiovisual"

  El V Congreso Internacional de Mitocrítica “Mito y creación audiovisual” es una iniciativa del Programa de Investigación Acis&Galatea, financiado por la Comunidad de Madrid y el Fondo Social Europeo. El Congreso estará dividido en 4 sedes según los temas: “Mitos germánicos” en la Universidad de Alcalá, “Mitos clásicos” en la Universidad Autónoma, “Mitos bíblicos” en la Universidad Francisco de Vitoria y “Mitos modernos” en la Universidad Complutense. El congreso  analizará el impacto de los mitos en la creación audiovisual desde el año 1900 hasta la actualidad y se organizará en torno a cuatro sedes durante dos semanas. Los investigadores pueden enviar a una de las 4 sedes su propuesta de comunicación. Su tarea consistirá en analizar el papel del cine, las series de televisión y los videojuegos en la creación y adaptación de los mitos antiguos, medievales y modernos a nuestro mundo contemporáneo.

  Intercultural exchange in the age of globalization, second edition

  In the context of today’s social, political and economic changes, power is one of the governing principles of culture. Power comes in many shapes and sizes and it manifests itself under various forms: it can be tyrannical or a combination of forces (Foucault); it can be charismatic, traditional and rational (Weber) or the opposite – manipulative; it can also appear as a system of diluted forces that spring from the “social field” (Bourdieu); it can remain in the unconscious or it can manifest itself in the speech act. However it may appear, it has become clear that power shapes the course of the creation, interpretation and analysis of literary texts and other cultural products.

  Combined call for paper "Colloquy" Special Issue and Book

  We are interested in submissions that explore the ethical dimensions of utopia, dystopia and science fiction (sf). This focus on ethics allows for a range of topics, including environmental ethics and climate change, human bioethics, animal ethics, the ethical use of technology, ethics of alterity and otherness, as well as related issues of social justice. We welcome submissions that bring these ethical considerations into dialogue with speculative fiction across different genres and modes, from sf about the near or distant future, to alternative histories about better or worse presents, to stories about utopian or dystopian societies.

  Four visiting fellowships in The Integrated Research Training Group of the Collaborative Research Centre/SFB 1150

  The Integrated Research Training Group of the Collaborative Research Centre/ SFB 1150 “Cultures of Decision-making”, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) at the University of Muenster since July 1st 2015, is offering four visiting fellowships for postgraduates / doctoral candidates in 2018 for a period of up to six months, starting in April 2018. The fellowship is EUR 1.365 per month (tax-free; if applicable plus children’s allowance; statutory accident insurance cover according to § 2 Abs. 1 Satz 1 SGB VII; health and social insurance not included) with an additional grant for traveling expenses. For the time of the fellowship the visiting fellows are members of the Integrated Research Training Group of the SFB 1150 and are expected to participate in the programme of the Integrated Research Training Group as well as in the common activities of the SFB 1150.

  ¿Qué queda de la posmodernidad?

  Since the 70s, the word postmodernity has articulated a tendency, a state of mind, and a condition that resists conceptualization or complete definition. Although the intellectual community has agreed to situate J. F. Lyotard and his key work, The Postmodern condition (1979), as the origin of the debate on this phenomenon, the truth is that the literary theorist Ihab Hassan had already used the word systematically in 1971. Since that date, the notion has spread across the fields of Literature, Architecture, Visual Arts, and the Social Sciences. These are two of the problems that one faces when approaching the surface of the postmodern phenomenon: its lack of definition and its ambiguous periodization.

  Scaling. What happens when we scale things up or down?

  Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018

  The 2018 session will be devoted to the investigation of scale and scaling as operative concepts for the analysis of media. What happens when we scale? Does anything really change? Can scaling ever impact the inner blueprint of an object? Are there laws of scaling? Or does scaling resist any attempt at calculability, such that, to investigate it, we can only ever look at individual events of scaling? As a media practice, scaling is widely used. But, in contrast to the ubiquity of operations, scaling is hardly ever viewed on its own terms as a basic concept of media analysis. The Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018 will attempt to map out approaches to scaling as a basic media-analytical tool.
