R&D Perspectives. Promoting Innovation through Education, Culture and Communication
Research and development are critical topics in the context of the current economic crisis. From this perspective, one of the challenging purposes is to raise awareness of the importance of R&D as key factors for growth, social and economic stability in the contemporary world. During the European Year of Creativity and Innovation, the major goal in all fields is to underline the strong links between science and society in order to make development, research and innovation indispensable for sustainability and competitiveness. In this context, the International Conference on R&D Perspectives. Promoting Innovation through Education, Culture and Communication seeks to provide an international forum for the presentation of new research results and problems related to these topics. All scholars, researchers, policy makers and advisers with an interest in these explosive fields are invited to exchange ideas and approaches. Their contributions can be in the form of: theoretical presentation adding new insights to the debate in the literature; original empirical research; case studies. -

Sensing Masculinity. Thinking about the Masculine Body
CFP – Social science history conference – Ghent, 13-16 April 2010
Thinking about representations of and discourses surrounding the male body usually entails thinking about the visible or tangible body. Studies concerning the history, sociology or anthropology of men’s bodies tend to focus on esthetical ideals (such as the muscular look), the ability to inflict or experience pain (most notably in times of war) or to give or experience pleasure (within or outside the hetero-normative bedroom). This CFP is an invitation to think about the masculine body once again, and to think beyond ‘seeing’ and ‘feeling’ as the only means to experience, analyse or represent bodies. -

Transnational Communities and Conflict: a Civil Society approach
Conflict resolution from below?
The International Civil Society Forum on Conflicts (INFOCON) is an EC funded research project, aiming to offer a better understanding of how Civil Society Organisations representing Transnational Communities can help in preventing and resolving conflicts. This interdisciplinary conference will debate the conflict resolution mechanisms used by different actors and how they can collaborate in order to achieve their major goals. The two-day conference will bring together the INFOCON researchers, policy experts at the local, national and European level, and representatives of the Civil Society. The event will be punctuated by several keynote addresses delivered by leading academics and policy-makers in the field of transnational communities and conflicts. -

Transgenres : nouvelles identités et visibilités
Transgenders: New Identities and Visibilities

Seventh Day of Geography. Spaces of Death and the dead in spaces
For the seventh consecutive year, the association Doc'Géo organizes the Day of Geography on April 7th, 2009 (in partnership with the Ecole Doctorale Montaigne Humanité, MSHA and ADES UMR CNRS 5185). This Day may primarily interest Masters, Doctoral, Post -doc, and therefore young researchers. The objective of this day is to consider the spatial dimension of death, a theme to which far too little attention was paid in the humanities, thus offering potential rich thematic analysis. The purpose of this one day conference is to initiate, through a partnership between several disciplines (geography, sociology, ethnology, anthropology, history, art history, philosophy, medicine, biology, ethology ...) an analysis of the relation between space and death. -

Doing Politics/Acting Politically
An International Workshop on The Political Dimension of Situated Practices
In recent years, abstract entities such as the State, the Citizen and Power inherited from political philosophy have been reassessed empirically, notably under the influence of pragmatist considerations in social science approaches of the political order. This important development has led to a much more concrete understanding of modern democracies, now seen as a contingent process rather than the direct outcome of institutional structures. The workshop will contribute to this development through presentation and discussion of related research projects. These projects have in common an observational approach to the situated practices through which political phenomena emerge in the first place. -

The deviant is one to whom that label has successfully been applied », Becker). -

International Conference on The Empowerment of Civil Society in Urban Policies
This conference seeks to analyze and to compare the institutionalization of empowerment and its impacts in diverse political, cultural, economic and institutional contexts since the empowerment seems, theoretically, to be a matrix of profound changes within contemporary States. The three-day conference organized by the UNESCO Chair on Urban Politics and Citizenship will address two key issues that are currently at the core of the transformations mentioned above: (i) the political and economical conditions of the institutionalization of empowerment in urban policies for the last 20 years, and (ii) the uses of empowerment on and by social groups within cities. -
Management devices and the quest for performance in the public sector
International Journal of Public Sector Performance Management (IJPSPM)
For several decades, and with renewed vigour since the late 1980s, public action has been called into question. All public institutions: the State, local governments, health organizations, state-run companies have been the object of two types of criticism. Economic inefficiency was jointly denounced with what was perceived as lack of democracy, transparency, equality, fairness and even security. -

Play. Ethnology of games and sports
In this special issue of Ethnologies, we invite thoughts on identity games and on performed identity in games and sports. We seek a better understanding of how a player can express and assert himself/herself in leisure or sporting practices, and of the social coherence of these practices. -

Call for papers - Ethnology, anthropology
This conference will explore the relationship between music and migration by providing new insights into the creative practices and life-stories of migrant artists across the globe. A core theme of the conference will be the motivations and experiences of migrant musicians who leave, return, stay or move beyond their localities. Through the focus on such specific groups of migrants the conference aims to throw light on their identifications in their artistic and every-day lives. Past and on-going research shows that patterns of migration are clearly linked to transnational networks. By focusing on the role of migrant musicians within such networks, this conference seeks to analyse and understand the extent to which musicians’ networks may or may not be special cases within migration studies. -

Call for papers - Political studies
Development studies are increasingly focused on democratization and the relationship between state power and issues of identity. Local communities and identity groups – ethnic, national, indigenous, religious - continuously struggle to negotiate their relations with the state and with each other in ways that may challenge conventional or legal definitions of citizenship. Collective identities may certainly exacerbate struggles between groups, but they may also create linkages, thus becoming both embedded in and inseparable from the democratization process. Increasingly, the quality of democracy is linked to inclusive citizenship regimes. These involve individual rights, but also a collectively defined “common good.” In divided societies both elements are problematic. -

Standardizing Psychoactive Drugs And Drug Uses. 1900-1970
Psychoactive drugs and drug treatments, within psychiatry, as well as those that have entered the public domain, have begun increasingly to attract the interest of historical researchers. An aspect of this research is the search for generalized concepts that can be used to understand the dynamics of the life-cycles of drugs. One such concept, and the focus of a new research program, sponsored by the European Science Foundation, is that of 'standardization'. -

Public Disorder: Post-World War II European Art and Its Publics
AAH 2009 : Intersections (April 2-4, 2009)
Following the end of WWII, artists across Europe, both east and west, sought to re-imagine the identity of the public. The internationalist utopia of the historical avant-garde had not come to pass, the populism of the national socialist model had been discredited by Fascism and Nazism, and it was yet unclear what shape the burgeoning commercial public would take in either soviet block or western nations. -

The Local and the Global. Practices and Politics of Historical Narrations and Negotiations
