Rethinking the Political and the History of Politics in Chile: Languages, Discourses and Practices of Power

The objective of this colloquium will be to debate and analyze politics and the political by means of the different forms of language, discourse and practices that intervene in the construction of the social world. There are myriad examples of this in Chilean history. Taking history, political philosophy and political economy as the starting points, we invite doctoral candidates, researchers and academics to participate in this truly trans disciplinary  space of debate, reflection and feedback whose goal is not only to unite a community of researchers into “the political” in the republican period but also to select the best works presented for a future publication in the format of a collective work or a special dossier of a scientific publication.

Transfers of precious metals and their consequences (17th-20th centuries)

After the first Round Table, in Paris at the École normale supérieure in January 2012, "Moneys and Economies during 19th Century, from Europe to Asia", a second Round Table will be organized in the framework of the program DAMIN, in cooperation with the Casa de Velázquez and the LabEx TransferS (École normale supérieure, Paris). Precious metals were often transferred from a region, or a country, to another: looting of conquered regions (such as Roman Spain, Gaul or Egypt), invasions (Vandals, Huns invading the Roman Empire, Crusaders arriving at Constantinople), and, of course arrival of gold and silver from Americas after 1492. Each time, the new metal disturbed the monetary systems, sometimes improving, sometimes troubling the currencies and economies. The period considered is focused on the 19th century, the question of the depreciation of silver and the transfers of metals from America or Europe to Asia, India, China, etc.

Women in Educated Elites of Pre-Socialist and Early Socialist East Central European Societies

The opening up to modernity of East Central Europe since the late 19th century was marked – among other things – by a triple process generating structural transformations of established post-feudal societies and affecting often radically the status of women. Due to post-feudal conditions of competition for social standing, positions of influence and prestige, hitherto unknown forms of inequalities appeared in the very process of accumulation of political, economic, professional, cultural an educational assets henceforth necessary for the access to the elites. Female professionals, though they could rarely achieve advanced careers in the ruling elites in the old regime, so much so that they often encountered even various forms of public rejection and discrimination on intellectual markets, significantly participated in the framing of the way of life of the new middle class. This workshop will adopt a gender-focused perspective cocentrating on the place of women (training, education, professions) and bringing to light the differences and inequalities existing between male and female members of educated elites.

Re-imagining democracy in the Mediterranean. Insurgency, regeneration and nation-building (1750-1860)

In what sense was democracy re-imagined in this period? In the middle of the eighteenth century, "democracy" was a concept familiar chiefly to the educated, referring primarily to the Ancient world, Greece and Rome. By the middle of the nineteenth century, it had been "re-imagined" as an important category for understanding the modern world. We are interested in how people at the time used the term: negatively as well as positively, and to describe and interpret a variety of phenomena, social and cultural as well as institutional.

Medical expertise in the 20th and 21st century / Medizinische Expertise im 20. und 21. Annual conference of the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences, September 5 – 7, 2013, Bern, Switzerland. The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?

Phantom Borders in the Political Behaviour and Electoral Geography in East Central Europe

We understand phantom borders as political borders, which politically/legally do not exist anymore but seem to appear in different forms and modes of social action and practices today, as for example voting as one part of political behaviour. The conference deals with historical borders, made visible in discourses and maps concerning political behavior, as for instance in electoral maps. Our aim is to challenge the historical interrelation of current political behaviour, the involvement of geopolitical images, internal as external governance contexts and transnational networks for (re)constructing historical borders as phantom borders. We are interested in case studies especially about East Central Europe, but also in studies from all over the world combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, addressing the main questions of the conference. Case studies may address different levels and scales from local to transnational.

Popular culture and protest repertoires in 20th century in Europe

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together scholars from different subject areas –historians, social anthropologists, political scientists and social movement scholars – to reflect in an interdisciplinary and comparative European perspective upon the influence of popular cultures and old repertoires of contention (rough music, mock trials, mock funerals, ride on donkeys, shaving, effigy burning or hanging, etc.) on modern protest.

The religious experience of the "disease of the soul" and its definitions in the early modern period: censorship, dissent and self-representation

The seminar aims at exploring the different meanings of the term "melancholy" in early modern religion, both Protestant and Catholic. One of its main purposes will be to enquire into, clarify, and emphasize both elements of continuity and what was specific to each of the diverse discourses on melancholy within the historical, socio-cultural, political, geographical and linguistic contexts that framed its production.

During 1960s, Quebec opens to the world. Both at the political, economic, social and cultural levels, Quebec tries to create, and in some cases, to recreate links with the outside world in a way to accelerate its process of modernization. The group of research GRIQUERE (2005) wishes to review the subject by organizing a colloquium aiming, on one hand, to report recent progress in the knowledge at this level and on the other hand, to identify the fields which were neglected up to here to direct the future researches.

« This Is the Modern World ».

    Crisis and Mobilization since 1789

The aim of this Conference is to consider the historical trajectory of socialism—in all its diverse forms—through crisis and mobilization. We understand crisis in the broadest sense of the word, encompassing not just economic downturns, but also political, social, cultural, and environmental crises as well as war, famine, natural disasters, and other disruptions. Crises vary in scale too, from the global or continental level down to the local.
