D.H. Lawrence and the Anticipation of the Ecocritical Turn

D.H. Lawrence has often been viewed as a post-romantic nature writer. Instead of looking back to the 19th century writers who influenced him, we propose in the 2019 Conference to consider how his literary practice and the philosophy that underlies it herald the ecocritical turn of the late 20th century. Broadly speaking, ecocriticism focuses on the study of the relationship between man and the natural environment, doing so from an interdisciplinary perspective. It is concerned both with the protection of the environment and with the destiny of man, or of "the human", in the geological era called the Anthropocene. Ecocriticism is a broad term, pointing to innumerable trends: ecopoetry, ecophilosophy (see Guattari's ecsophy), ecoethics, ecoethology, ecopolitics, ecofeminism, etc.

Five-Year Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

All Souls College invites applications for up to four Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships, one in each of the following subjects: Literature in English; Mathematics; Modern Languages; Mathematics; and Social and Political Sciences (limited to Politics and International Relations, Social Anthropology, and Sociology). Those elected will be expected to take up their Fellowships on 1 October 2019 or such other date as may be agreed in advance with the College. The Fellowship are for five years, fixed-term, and non-renewable.

Les échanges humanistes dans les provinces du Nord pendant la Renaissance

Premier colloque international de Saint-Omer

Le colloque international de Saint-Omer est organisé conjointement par le Centre de Recherche et d’Études Histoire et Sociétés (EA 4027 CREHS - université d’Artois), et la Communauté d’Agglomération du Pays de Saint-Omer (CAPSO) représentée par sa Bibliothèque et son Université Populaire. Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire : La Renaissance dans les Provinces du Nord, coordonné depuis 2015 par Charles GiryDeloison et Laurence Baudoux, et dans la continuité des journées d’études annuelles organisées au sein de ce programme à l’université d’Artois. En ce sens, le propos de cette rencontre est d’interroger les diverses manifestations de la Renaissance dans les Anciens Pays Bas aux XVIème et XVIIème siècles, touchant les principaux champs des humanités (philosophie, lettres et arts), et en se concentrant plus particulièrement sur les échanges, rencontres et associations entre les différents acteurs de cette renaissance culturelle.

Topics include the range of French dialects spoken in Paris, their origins and their future; the linguistic situation of immigrants whose first language is not French, particularly immigrant communities from North Africa and Arabic-speaking communities; the connections between language and social and educational issues within and around Paris.

La presse francophone dans les Amériques

La culture et la langue françaises ont joué un rôle important dans le monde, tout particulièrement dans la presse du XIX^e siècle, phénomène qui s’étend jusqu’au milieu du XX^e siècle et s’est développée grâce à l’expansion des moyens techniques de production et de communication, permettant la circulation des modèles de presse et des sujets traités, ainsi que la constitution d’imaginaires mondialisés. Ce congrès est ainsi consacré à rassembler des chercheurs dédiés à l’étude de la presse périodique francophone dans les Amériques du XIX^e et début du XX^e siècle, comme journaux, revues et almanachs.

Language contact and translation in religious context

Comparative approaches

This conference brings together anthropologists and linguists working on conversion, cultural transmission and translation theory, as well as on various case studies, whose geography comprises Oceania, Amazonia, Yucatan, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Europe, Alaska and Chukotka (Russia), and whose temporal frame spreads from the Hellenistic era to the Spanish colonization of the Americas and to the present time. The main questions of the conference are the modalities of the ethnolinguistic encounter and translation accompanying religious conversion, whether, and how, the language gets altered as a result of these processes, and what are the broader cognitive and sociocultural consequences that accompany the linguistic transformation.

Communautés cléricales et communautés monastiques dans le monde carolingien (VIIIe-Xe siècle)

Ce colloque entend appréhender les évolutions des communautés cléricales et monastiques d’époque carolingienne afin d’interroger les effets concrets de la réforme de 816-819 et la notion même d’institutionnalisation de l’Église, dont on fait souvent un des traits caractéristiques de la période. Il s’agira d’observer de quelle manière étaient organisées ces institutions, entre le VIII^e et la fin du X^e siècle, sans préjuger d’une rupture en un temps donné, afin de mieux mesurer ce qui caractérisait les différents types de communautés (monastiques et canoniques / canoniales) et à quel point l'effort réformateur mené à l’initiative de la cour constitue ou non une inflexion majeure dans l’histoire de l’organisation de l’Église et des communautés ecclésiastiques.

(Re) thinking translations

Methodologies, objectives, perspectives

In the last four decades, scholars have begun to go beyond the traditional perspective of linguistic and literary studies, and to consider the translations as cultural practices and the result of various processes of cultural and intellectual “negotiation” between two different contexts. In recent years also historians have progressively started to take a close interest in translations as sources to investigate the ways in which knowledge and ideas were constructed, disseminated, re-elaborated and assimilated in new cultural, social and political contexts. The aims of this international conference is to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue on these problems, bringing together scholars, graduate students and early career researchers from Translation Studies, History, History of Book, History of Science, Literary Studies and related disciplines who are interested in discussing methodologies, objectives and perspectives in the study of translations.

The present workshop addresses questions of language contact and language change, as well as language standardization in the Christian context both in Europe and in the New World (Americas, Africa) through a study of diachronic and synchronic corpora. Special attention is paid, on the one hand, to the role of translation as a sight of language contact, and on the other hand, to register variation as an indicator of differential propagation of innovations appeared in Christian context.

Intercultural exchange in the age of globalization, second edition

In the context of today’s social, political and economic changes, power is one of the governing principles of culture. Power comes in many shapes and sizes and it manifests itself under various forms: it can be tyrannical or a combination of forces (Foucault); it can be charismatic, traditional and rational (Weber) or the opposite – manipulative; it can also appear as a system of diluted forces that spring from the “social field” (Bourdieu); it can remain in the unconscious or it can manifest itself in the speech act. However it may appear, it has become clear that power shapes the course of the creation, interpretation and analysis of literary texts and other cultural products.
