    The Social Construction of Illegality

The conference "Norms in the Margins and Margins of the Norm, The Social Construction of Illegality" proposes to reflect on the relations between the dynamics of criminalization and the construction of state powers, on the one hand, and on criminal strategies – legal or not –, moral economies in the illegal spheres, the ploys and tactics of “deviant” groups on the other hand.

    Conference, symposium - Ethnology, anthropology

    Psychotic Experiences, Religion, and Spirituality

This conference is centered on reported or observed psychotic experiences and discusses the ways in which religious and spiritual idioms are mobilized by patients, as well as by medical and psychological practitioners and religious healers in their therapeutic relations. Overall, the conference covers a significant variety of social, institutional and cultural contexts. As an expected result, we should be able to better understand the ways in which culture and social institutions contribute to the shaping of individual psychotic experience, and how they create dynamics of integration and exclusion. In addition, by inviting social scientists and medical practitioners to confront their perspectives, we would like to question what appears to be the underlying constructivist stance on many recent perspectives on religious experience and spirituality linked to psychotic states.

Beyond Brezhnevism: Growing Autonomy for Social Groups and Assimilation of Socialist Values

1st International Conference on Anthropology and Urban Conflict

Desertions, Counter-movements, and Forced Mobilizations in the Contemporary City

The aim of this conference is to make an inventory and to analyze, from different ethnographic approaches, those often invisible phenomena of daily or extraordinary disobedience designed for, or inspired by, a rejection of spatial, economic, political, and social order. However, in order to identify them as mechanisms aimed at denouncing a particular order, we must approach these by looking at concepts that synthesize at once the processes that impose a homogeneous order as well as the practices that challenge it.

The Falklands War 30 years on

Conflict, conflict resolution, political change, representations

    Conference, symposium - Urban studies

Rethinking urban inclusion. Spaces, mobilizations, interventions

The Conference aims to understand and ultimately rethink social inclusion at the urban scale, as the product of broader dynamics and the interaction of different actors and languages. It will focus on emerging modes of contesting the centrality of the state and market pervasiveness, new varieties of counter-hegemonic positions and projects, and alternative visions of urban democracy and justice that inform bottom-up and participatory approaches to urban inclusion. By mixing academic with social movement and civil society “expertise,” experiences of both the global North and the global South, and the languages of social science and policy with those of the humanities and art, the Conference aims to contribute to an “ecology of knowledges” that gives visibility to new forms of collective action and community experimentation reshaping contemporary cities in different contexts.

What about History then? Assessment of the role of history in Indian Studies

Rails and urban development. A Comparative Approach between France and the United Kingdom

In France as in the United Kingdom, the issue of sustainable development along with preoccupations about energy costs are leading developers and urban planners to put rail transport at the centre of their concerns. Despite this similar context and though development in both countries has in general been strongly linked to rail, the relationships between urban development and rail transport seem to be quite different. France has seen a strong development of its tram networks since the beginning of the 1980s, whereas in Britain the revival of light rail systems has been more modest. On the other hand, the emergence of urban ‘railway star’ networks to service the peripheries of large cities has been more pronounced in Britain. Yet the role of major transport projects is a crucial issue in both countries in the metropolitan strategies of large urban areas like London and Paris. To comparatively explore the issue of railway transport and urban development the universities of Paris 1 Sorbonne and Liverpool are organising two linked seminars. The first of these will take place in Paris in May 2012, and consider the (re)development of LRT and tramway systems. The second seminar will be held in Liverpool in Autumn 2012 and address the issue of links between territorial development and railways.
