Contemporary Cybernetic Performativity in the Life Sciences
This workshop will be devoted to the relations that currently link cybernetics to the life sciences. There is ample evidence of the existence of these links in the historiographical literature, from the inception of cybernetics in Northern America (Heims) as well as in Europe (Pickering). It is not our purpose to dwell on this here, but only to remember that several doctors in medicine and biologists participated in the first meetings of the cyberneticians funded between 1943 and 1951 by the Macy Foundation, a foundation whose work was mainly concerned with the health sciences...

Skills and Mobility without Methodological Nationalism
In the late 20th century, the metaphor of “brain drain” dominated the understanding of skilled labor mobility at a global level. Indebted to methodological nationalism, the metaphor of “brain drain” framed the analysis as if nation-states were the primary, sometime the single, unit of concern: the focus was on how countries are affected by highly-skilled migration, what policies they should adopt, and what obligations do individuals owe to the countries.

The Why Linguistics Conference
This conference proposes a constructive take on the question "Why?", as in, why are we doing what we are doing as linguists, and what is our contribution to knowledge? Or, equally well, what is the contribution of a particular domain of linguistics to other disciplines, and in turn, their contribution to linguistics? To what end do linguistics and any such neighboring fields of research or industry converge in their methods, results and problem setting? We welcome ideas both from within the linguistics community and fields of research or industry that involve the study of human language.

Trading Zones in Technological Societies
20 years of SPIRAL Research Centre
New developments, such as, for example, new genetic testing, digitized work environments, biobanks, 3D printed tissues or high-level radioactive waste, create promises and expectations, but also entail great uncertainty with regard to societal and political impacts. In this respect, we observe the development of imaginative and interdisciplinary dialogues pursuing multiple dimensions of possible outcomes and normatively evaluating such outcomes. In order to question and elaborate on the "trading zones" where such dialogues take place, we encourage submissions to present papers and/or posters on one of the three following subthemes: genomics and public health, safety and nuclear energy, and governance of the knowledge societies.

Conference, symposium - Prehistory and Antiquity
Memoria scientiae 2015
According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. At the same time, however, eating habits are among the starting points on which differences between humans, animals and plants are culturally built. This means that a transversal biological praxis can be used as an anthropological device, in order to to fix and identify specific boundaries and thresholds, either symbolic or theoretical, between both animality and vegetality on the one hand, and zoosphere and anthroposphere on the other hand.

Politicizing the Future of the (Semantic) Web
Philoweb 2015
The relationship between the Web and philosophy is now at a crucial turning point. While a group of philosophers and philosophically-influenced scholars are increasingly interested in the Web, we are facing unprecedented challenges around its future that requires concerted efforts between researcher and disciplines to be properly addressed. With both Internet governance and the very architecture of the Web undergoing rapid change, now is the time for a philosophy of the Web to help to fulfill the Web’s full potential, expanding upon its fundamental principles in new terrains ranging from mass surveillance to the impact of the Internet of things.

Both the on-going fragmentation in Syria and the progressing territorial disintegration of Ukraine demonstrate currently the radical character of changes in the European neighbourhood. Numerous states are dramatically challenged in their function as administrative, political and territorial entities. They are subject to violent transformations and their viability is being increasingly questioned. Which role do states play in transformation periods and in revolutionary situations? Are they still the key analytical category for analyzing the political change?

Inequalities in and through science and technology as challenges for sociological research
CFP ESA, Research Network 24, Sociology of Science and Technology Network (SSTNET)
Increasing social inequalities, exacerbated by neoliberal policies and international economic crisis, have been an issue of science and technology studies (STS) even prior to the crisis. Instead of normative claims about the socially beneficial or harmful role of science and technology, a more complex sociological perspective has been promoted. This perspective, postulating that S&T impacts are closely interrelated to social context and circumstances has the potential to be more productive in studying the relationship between techno-scientific development and social inequalities. The global economy, with its increasing role of S&T, seems to increase inequalities within contemporary societies, as well as between them.

MAT – first issue online
MAT seeks to rethink medicine, medicines, and medical systems in local and global contexts, within the broad fields of medical anthropology, science and technology studies (STS), and global health. In line with our commitment to open access, accepted articles (up to 10,000 words) will be written in clear language that makes insights available to a wide readership. The editors seek to publish work that innovates both theoretically and methodologically, or that revisits classical anthropological theory in thinking through contemporary problems. We also seek work from ‘applied’ anthropologists and activists working in sites outside of academia. Submissions undergo a double-blind peer-review process.

The social before the sociological rereading 19th-century social thinking
Thematic issue of L'Année sociologique. Guest editor : François Vatin. Volume 67 / 2017, issue 2
It is customary to locate the birth of sociology in the final years of the 19th century. In this respect, the case of France is particularly significant, with the publication of Émile Durkheim’s The Rules of Sociological Method in 1895. Rightly or wrongly, Durkheim’s founding act, more or less transposed into the other intellectual traditions, nevertheless led the variously named schools of social thought that had preceded it - social science, social physiology, social philosophy, social physics, etc. – to be relegated to the dark ages of “prehistory”. It is not the goal of this call for papers to rehabilitate forgotten social traditions, to deny the break that occurred at the end of the 19th century or to diminish the importance of the survey in sociological inquiry. It is to reflect on the pertinence for contemporary sociology of reading the works that preceded the moment conventionally accepted as the birth of sociology.

According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. In the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period
The brain has, throughout history, been considered an important achievement in the creation of man, although often secondary to the soul and the heart. Our knowledge about how the brain has been conceived in the past is, however, very fractional, especially for the late Medieval and early modern periods. This conference looks to re-situate the question of knowing the brain anew in a dialogue between medicine (anatomy, physiology and pathology) and natural philosophy (inter alia physics, biology and psychology).

Alexandre Koyré: Transatlantic perspectives
This symposium commemorates the 50th anniversary of Koyré's death by focusing on his legacy in the United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, pioneers of the history of science such as Thomas S. Kuhn, I. B. Cohen, Marshall Clagett, Gérald Holton or Charles Gillispie have all admitted his influence on the discipline. The participants will discuss Koyré's impact on the American intellectual landscape and the reception of his ideas among the historians and philosophers who sought to professionalize the teaching of the history of science in the United States.

Global Health: Anticipations, Infrastructures, Knowledges
The framing of health as a global issue over the last three decades has carved out an intellectual, economic and political space that differs from that of the post-war international public health field. This older system was characterised by disease eradication programs and by the dominance of nation states and the organisations of the United Nations. The actors, intervention targets and tools of contemporary global health contrast with previous international health efforts.

A Workshop on the historical Performativity of Emotions
The idea that the body is the site in which emotions are expressed is an old one in Western Culture. However, shall we alternatively consider emotions as historical agents that have given meaning to systems of symbolic relations which we understand here as “bodies”? This three-day workshop seeks to explore the conception of emotions as cultural practices that do things and have the power of creating emotional bodies throughout history. With this aim in mind, we will examine the production of physical, social, political, artistic and literary bodies in connection with the changing meaning of social norms, cultural codes and institutions, and especially as the result of the work of emotions.
