Recherches géoarchéaologiques en Mer Noire et en Mer d’Azov

Depuis les premières études engagées en 1783 par Gablitz sur la chôra de Chersonèse, la Mer Noire constitue une zone de référence dans les recherches conduites sur l’aménagement des espaces ruraux et littoraux au sein du monde colonial grec. Le relevé systématique des nombreux fossés et murets qui parcourent le littoral occidental de la Crimée, initié dans le cadre du projet grec de Catherine II, a précédé de quelques décennies l’ouverture des premières fouilles en 1832 sur les espaces urbains. Une nouvelle étape, décisive, a été franchie dans les années 1960 par la mise en application d’une archéologie du sol, laquelle a offert un éclairage inédit sur l’organisation interne de plusieurs kleroi proches de Chersonèse, Kerkinitis et Kalos Limen. Au même moment débutaient dans l’Ouest de la mer Noire les premières recherches sur le territoire d’Istros, bientôt enrichies par l’apport de nombreuses études géomorphologiques sur les métamorphoses du delta voisin du Danube. Les bases fertiles d’une enquête géoarchéologique étaient jetées, laquelle n’a cessé depuis de s’enrichir grâce aux travaux menés ces dernières années tout autour de la zone pontique.

Love, Sex, and War: Towards another History of 20th Century, Europe

Workshop One – Sources for Historians of Love, Sex, and War

This workshop will launch a two-year research project focusing on the history of love, sex, and war in Europe. Historian Dagmar Herzog has called the 20th century “the century of sex,” while Laura Lee Downs and Kathleen Canning consider it a time when “gender troubles” emerged. Yet, the 20th century also initiated greater equality between the sexes and increasing liberalization of sexual norms and rights. Both categories – gender and sexuality – profoundly shaped the last century. Two world wars, genocide, and other episodes of mass violence make it crucial to examine European societies from a social and cultural perspective and to ask: what role did gender and sexuality play in these events? The workshop aims to identify specific sources that explore emotional realms such as affection, desire, inhibitions, repulsion, and grief.

From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

Trabajar sobre grupos alzados en armas que se organizaron en el marco de la 'lucha de clases' desde los años 1960, es tarea difícil en la medida en que significa trabajar sobre la clandestinidad. Nombrar, investigar o repensar a grupos como el ‘Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso’ (PCP-SL) y el Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru (MRTA) supone un peligro para el investigador: ser llamado ‘terrorista’ es común en un medio donde el discurso oficial y el discurso académico han confluido para dar una versión única. Intermediate Groups in the Portuguese Dominions, 16th-18th century

Revista de História (Universidade de São Paulo)

The Revista de História of the University of São Paulo (Brazil) invites interested scholars to submit proposals for articles to be published as part of a ‘dossier’ concerning intermediate groups in the Portuguese dominions on the Early Modern Age. Throughout that period, ‘middle people’ strove to assert themselves in rural areas and helped to shape old and new urban centers in the Portuguese World, corresponding to an increased demand for specialized services and ensuring the necessary extensions of royal representation functions and Church activities. Even though almost non-existent in juridical or normative terms, those groups were recognized both by nationals and foreigners as a complex and vibrant intermediate social layer. Time has come to try and distinguish its specificities, trends of formation and effective roles in social dynamics.

An international survey of current research

The Departments of History of Universiteit Gent, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Université Lille 3 and Università di Bologna are jointly organizing the international conference “Academic entrepreneurship in history” on 12-13 March 2015 at the STAM city museum in Ghent, Belgium. The aim of the meeting is to bring together an international group of scholars engaged in research on the notion and practice of academic entrepreneurship from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. The focus will be on the range of actions, behaviors and qualities of academic scientists and their employing institutions which can be seen as entrepreneurial in at least one of the many senses in which the entrepreneurship term has been used in the economics and business history literatures.

Regional producers or global players? The internationalization of companies in the 19th and 20th centuries

An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers. En France, l’histoire des femmes a connu un grand essor depuis une trentaine d’années, mais les recherches sont concentrées sur l’Occident. Or, dans le domaine très vaste de l’histoire mésopotamienne, il existe de nombreuses études ponctuelles en histoire des femmes et du genre, mais encore peu de synthèses. L’histoire économique est, par ailleurs, un domaine bien représenté en assyriologie, du fait de la conservation de dizaines de milliers de tablettes d’argile enregistrant des opérations administratives, des contrats, ainsi que des actes relevant du droit familial. En dépit de cette richesse, l’histoire du travail est restée un parent pauvre de l’histoire économique. Le colloque a pour ambition d’envisager les occupations économiques dans lesquelles interviennent des femmes, dans une perspective du genre, sur les trois millénaires d’histoire proche-orientale, en faisant participer une trentaine de chercheurs de divers pays.

Architecture and liturgy: design autonomy and standards

The second International Seminar offers a new stage of critical reflection on the relationship between the liturgical and ecclesiastical guidelines offered by the Second Vatican Council and church architecture, and propose a reflection on what the terms of dialogue and the interdependence between architecture and liturgy are. The dogmatic constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium is a fundamentally important document in the Church's struggle for renewal with immediate and obvious repercussions on the architectural questions concerning the construction and organization of the celebratory space. Therefore, this Seminar is intended as an occasion to compare and propose various ways of seeing and experiencing the relationship between autonomy and the standard applied to the architectural design, in reference to conciliar liturgical instances.

Exploring repetition in popular music

Over and Over: Exploring repetition in popular music aims at identifying and studying the recent aesthetic and analytical developments of musical repetition. From the 32-bar forms of Tin Pan Alley, through the cyclic forms of modal jazz, to the more recent accumulation of digital layers, beats, and breaks in Electronic Dance Music (EDM), repetition as both an aesthetic disposition or formal musicological property stimulated a diversity of genres and techniques. After decades of riffs, loops, vamps, reiterated rhythmic patterns, as well as pervasive harmonic formulae and recurring structural units in standardized song forms, the time has come to give these notions the place they deserve in the study of popular music.

Policies and economic dynamics

Ports and port cities have stood out over time as important categories of historical analysis. The study of port systems and the internal dynamics of European ports, side by side with navigation circuits and international commerce has generated a vast literature.In the contexts of the first and the second globalization processes it is essential to develop crossing studies to place ports within globally articulated networks. The relationships between European, African and American Atlantic seaports are fundamental to the understanding of overall dynamics related to the economy, population, policy and culture. A wide European historiography confirms the importance of the seaport spaces and dynamics. This tends to be reinforced with innovative contributions, focused for the last decades upon port systems analysis.
