Thinking Europe Visually

L'Europe par l'image et en images

"If I had to do it again, I would start with culture": this statement often erroneously attributed to Jean Monnet suggests that in the absence of a shared culture, Europe as a political and economic construct remains nothing but a hollow shell. This conference aims to question the disillusioned position which holds that there is no meaningful common European culture, and to do so through images. One way to visualize the potential existence and limits of a European cultural base is indeed to trace the circulation of images – be they works of art, press images, posters, photographs, or even motifs and patterns – in the region, from antiquity through to the present day. What are the images that have circulated most widely in Europe? Are they specific to Europe or are they already globalized? What was their visual and symbolic impact? Is there a "visual culture" specific to Europe and, if so, what might be its distinctive "patterns"?

Le premier colloque organisé dans le cadre du projet JPI-CH Olive4All (Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage and Global Change) s’inscrit dans le premier workpackage du projet dévolu à l’inventaire du patrimoine de l’olivier et au repérage des acteurs qui le détiennent dans les trois régions du programme (Provence en France, Messénie en Grèce, Tras o Montes, Alto Douro et Alentejo au Portugal). Nous nous intéresserons à partir des enquêtes conjointes menées comparativement aux acteurs liés au patrimoine de l’olivier, les motivations à leur engagement pour sa sauvegarde et les formes de cet engagement.

New tools and old questions in the analysis of textual corpora

The aim of this first Channels of Digital Scholarship seminar series is to reflect upon new avenues for the analysis and use of textual corpora. Textual corpora and their uses represent several challenges in the development and validation of digital tools for analysis, the dialogue between disciplines, and the institutional structures that support the wide range of projects that are being developed. In this series of four seminars, the Maison Française d'Oxford and Digital Scholarship @ Oxford, with the help of leaders of digital humanities initiatives in the CIVIS network, propose to explore these challenges from Franco-British and international perspectives.

Forest citizenship for disaster resilience: learning from COVID-19

Postdoctoral fellowship of the Research Project Trans-Atlantic Platform (FAPESP/ESRC/NSF)

The Project “Forest citizenship for disaster resilience: learning from COVID-19” and the Department of Sociology at Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) are receiving applications for one postdoctoral (PD) scholarship to develop research on forest citizenship in Amazonia. This scholarship is associated with the Trans-Atlantic Platform, supported by FAPESP Grant 2021/07558-3, directed by Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Constante Martins in Brazil, Luke Parry in the United Kingdom, and Peter Newton in the United States. The main goal of this postdoctoral fellowship, which was pre-approved by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), is to investigate how forest peoples, notably rural communities and riverine populations, have made use of specific practices and actions to face the pandemic of COVID-19, and how the strategies adopted by these social groups - outside the established institutional circuits - have been constituted as important instruments for the maintenance of their ways of life.

Medieval studies and medievalism both focus on the same object, the Middle Ages. Yet their approaches are different. Long separated, medieval studies and medievalism are now challenged to rethink their links in research, teaching and social dissemination of knowledge. The summer school aims to help young researchers to strengthen their understanding of these scientific developments, to position their research effectively, and to develop networks with international researchers. The school, in French and English, proposes lectures by world-renowned specialists, debates, meetings with professionals and practical workshops.

How platforms change food value chains?

The aim of this seminar is to explore to what extent the development of marketing platforms modifies the interactions between the actors of the agricultural sector. The scientists' view will be confronted with that of Mr. Christophe Alliot, expert at the BASIC office. In a recent report, he emphasized the inevitability and necessity of digital development, but also demonstrated that this dynamic is not without consequences for consumers' eating habits and farmers' production practices. Mixing his expertise with that of researchers and professionals will allow a comprehensive view of the impacts the development of platforms has on the scale of the value chain actors, but also on the scale of the agricultural sector as a whole.

In the first part of the discussions, the aim will be to identify, through different editions of the games, on the one hand what belongs to the “Olympic model” and, on the other hand, what has been specific to some editions or to the fields of urbanism, security, ecology and economy. Following the successful results of last year's series of seminars, the PhD students belonging to the Anthropology of the Ancient World curriculum of the PhD course in Classics and Archeology would like to promote a fifth cycle of seminars of the series Classicamente. Dialoghi senesi sul mondo antico. The series is characterised by a particular interest in the different methodologies and research perspectives which represent the main fields of enquiry of anthropology of the ancient world since its first development (with the works of Gernet, Vernant and Detienne), but it also focuses on how different inter-discipliary approaches can contribute to its constant innovation. In addition, one of the main goals of this year's edition is to create a meeting point for scholarship on antiquity and contemporary debate on its reception in modern societies, underlining the cultural, social and ideological aspects which spark from the interection between present and past.

The Bright Side of Night

Nocturnal Activities in Medieval and Early Modern Times

In most societies, the night is associated with danger, criminality, the liminal, or death, and pre-modern Europe is no exception – on the contrary, its image is embedded in the romanticized view of an age that feared the end of day. Despite abundant research on this side of darkness, there was another, less obvious attitude towards the night which has seen much less scholarly attention yet: nocturnal activities that were cherished, sought after, or thought only possible during night-time. This conference looks for such positive sides of night: The search for the relics of saints, the night-time prayers, the pursuit of astronomy or other sciences at the foot of a candlestick, or social events that took place when the labors of the day were over. In short, we ask for the bright side of night in medieval and early modern times.

With many countries opting for a federal structure of the government, federalism has now become a popular research topic among political scientists and constitutional scholars, leading to the burgeoning of centers and research projects at the international level. Federal ideas and the reality of existing federal states cannot be sharply divided. A comprehensive analysis of institutional philosophical roots can thus help us to further a comprehensive understanding of federal institutions as well as design appropriate analytical tools for investigating elements of multilevel governance systems.

Transmédiagénie et transécriture

During the last decades, new concepts revolving around mediality and intermediality entered the arena of theoretical debates concerning the links between cinema and the established arts. Our conference aims to reassess two of these terms, namely transmédiagénie (transmediatization) and transécriture (transwriting). André Gaudreault and Philippe Marion’s concept of transécriture distances itself from the old paradigm of “fidelity” toward the original text and rethinks adaptations in accordance with the specific semiotical reconfigurations of the target medium. Transmédiagénie, on the other hand, is a wider notion defined by Philippe Marion as “a narrative’s capacity for star-like expansion, circulation and transmedial propagation.”

Les contributeurs sont invités à se pencher sur la relation de dépendance d’une communication politique ayant graduellement investi ces réseaux, confrontée à l’opacité des politiques de modérations en vigueur et au risque de bannissement. The aim of this conference is to scrutinize afresh the traditional notion of inspiration and related concepts such as revelation, in the framework of a theological reflection that takes into account both the challenges of biblical criticism and contemporary hermeneutics. What does it mean to speak of an inspired text when the manuscript evidence reveals that it is fluid, and when historical criticism shows that it is self-contradictory or fictional? Is there “theology” in the Bible, in spite of its inner plurality? Should reception be regarded as an integral part of revelation and/or of the inspiration process? Such questions will be raised not only in relation to Christianity, but also in relation to Judaism and Islam.
