    On the resilience of terrorism

Based on the thesis of the mutual interdependencies between counter-terrorism measures and terrorist (response) strategies, the workshop aims to elaborate this reciprocal relationship with the help of the resilience heuristic. It aims to identify processes of coping, adaptation and transformation of terrorist groups, which have so far been only marginally investigated using such a concept. Furthermore, its objective is to take first steps to compare the resilience of terrorist and counter-terrorist actors with regard to the strategies, resources, and dispositions that are applied and (potentially) effective in these processes. Altogether, the figuration as a whole and the interrelationship between terrorist and counter-terrorist groups will be discussed.

Visualizing archaeological data: GIS mapping and network modeling

Archaeologists use different methods for visualizing their data – for analysis and for presentation. The international spring school will discuss successful ways to visualize these data and challenges and successes in the application of both GIS and network analysis (NA). Through an integration between theory, studies, and tutored practice, we aim to access the two learnt methods to each participant for independent use.

Digitalisation and creation of alternative monetary and financial spaces

This workshop proposes to explore the intersection between digitalisation and alternative monetary spaces developed in response to the sustainable development objectives. The Covid 19 pandemic has accentuated the challenges posed by digitalisation and highlighted its contradictory characteristics. On the one hand, the phenomenon allows, thanks to its technical potential, the valorization of local initiatives; on the other hand, it can favor forms of dehumanization and predation, likely to undermine the collective trust on which these spaces are based. The workshop proposed to address the contradictory nature of digitalisation processes from the perspective of their potential to strenghten and/or challenge economic and social cohesion.

    Venice, a Mediterranean regional power

Economic, maritime and political perspectives, 1669 – 1797

The Mediterranean has always been at the heart of Venice’s interests during the Early Modern Period. A main source of its prosperity, the Inner Sea maintained its vital role even after the “northern invasions”, the battle of Lepanto and the “downturn” of the 17th century. This seminar aims to explore the relationship between Venice and the Mediterranean between the loss of Crete, the last major dominion of Venetian maritime empire in 1669, and the end of the Republic in 1797.

    On Hinterlands and Homelands

“Have not all races had their first unity from a mythology that marries them to rock and hill?” Yeats wonders rhetorically. The idea of the homeland is organically enmeshed in notions of territoriality and geography. The hinterland is most often seen as its configuration as well as figuration in literature. It is so because it represents an ideal sense of national identity, unity, and even “purity” in extreme nationalist ideologies. It is considered an ideal space insofar as it is imagined as a utopian place, a locus amoenus, where an unsullied form of national character is preserved in its local traditions, dialects, myths and legends. The city is often portrayed as a fallen space, a wound, a disease corrupting the national body. We seek to rethink all these rigid dichotomies. “On Hinterlands and Homelands” Conference invites multidisciplinary papers on these themes.

    The Completion of Eurasia?

Continental logistical convergence or regional diplomatic dissent?

The present state in the construction of Eurasia is proving a challenge for analysts. Given the fast pace of this construction, from a Europe Asia Meeting (ASEM) since 1996 to a Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) since 2015 (a Eurasian Economic Community was formed in the 1990s) and now the more applied cross-continental Land New Silk Road since the same key period, 2013-2015 (Ukraine’s crisis and US/NATO announced withdrawal from Afghanistan), it seems that diplomatic decisions and interstate practical schemes exceed the capacity of observers to conceptualise quickly enough what is happening. Yet, all the while, Eurasia is experiencing a mix of centripetal evolutions at its peripheries, and a launch of its centrifugal potentials from the core of Eurasia : Russia and Central Asia.

Levantine Sociabilities in Europe in Giacomo Casanova’s time

Spies, Impostors, Courtesans and Men of Culture

In the eighteenth century, intrigue, libertinage and criminality changed the social norms of politeness and education thereby creating nonconformist social behaviours. An explicit, but certainly not unique, manifestation of these new trends is represented by the city of Venice and its adventurer par excellence, Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798). Ecclesiastic, writer, soldier, spy, alchemist, gambler and diplomat, he was engaged in a network of social relationships which are documented in his Histoire de ma vie (History of my Life), one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the eighteenth century. Like London, Paris and Vienna, Venice became a centre of social mobility, geographically located as the threshold of the Levant.

The Inquisition(s) and the Christian East, 1500-1800

    Doing family Online

(In)formal knowledge circulation, information seeking practices and support communities

Individuals and families are increasingly reliant on information and communication technologies for their daily needs, activities, and socialization. Apart from rapid push to Internet-based communication brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, all levels of government have been ‘dematerializing’ administrative procedures for some time. Couples, parents, children, and other family members use the Internet to navigate certain formalities and get access to practical information regarding, for example, heath care, schooling, or marriage. This multidisciplinary special issue of Family Relations examines the role of the Web as a human and bureaucratic-legal support tool for “doing family” and providing services for families around the world.

Classicamente. Dialoghi senesi sul mondo antico

    Diritto e Ritualità

The full online seminar “Diritto e Ritualità” 10-11 November 2021 will focus on questions of Greek law and ritual forms in the ancient world, investigated through the lens of anthropology. We will explore the relationship between rhetoric and law, the evidence of judicial practices in literary sources and some issues related to the analysis of specific epigraphic sources (defixiones and prayers for justice). In the second day, we will try to put some ritual forms of the ancient world into context. In particular, we will investigate the function of knucklebones in Greek sanctuaries and the relationship between the ludic dimension and the ritual one. Late antique adoratio will also be discussed in light of the most recent theories developed by Anthropology and Ritual Studies.

Ancient mosques in their spatial context

Mosques are one of the physical representations of Islam and of Muslim communities in the archaeological record. The workshop will present a number of archaeological case studies in the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, and Spain between the seventh and the thirteenth centuries. Mosques will be introduced in relation to water systems and burials, to earlier and later structures, and to specific types of settlements. In particular, the workshop will treat the question of Islamization, the definitions of the term, and its validity. The event will also include launching a database for excavated mosques until the 9th century in OpenContext.org and discuss methods and approaches for open data in archaeology.

History, Philology and Archaeology of Zoroastrianism

The purpose of this workshop will be to provide a multidisciplinary approach by combining historical studies, archaeology and philology, in order to contribute to the study of the ancient zoroastrian religion, ideally outside of modern Iran and India. Nevertheless, this purpose cannot be achieved without taking into consideration and a side-by-side comparison of the data from the long-standing tradition of the mentioned disciplines, collected from Iran, India and other related regions.
