The Centre for e-Research (CeRch) is seeking a Research Developer in dynamic web development including implementation of front-end interfaces. The Researcher will work across two major European Commission funded research infrastructure projects: the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) (www.ehri-project.eu) and Data Service Infrastructure for the Social Sciences and the Humanities (Dasish) (www.dasish.eu) projects. Music encoding is now a prominent feature of various areas in musicology and music librarianship. The encoding of symbolic music data provides a foundation for a wide range of scholarship, and over the last several years, has garnered a great deal of attention in the digital humanities. This conference intends to provide an overview of the current state of data modeling, generation, and use, and aims to introduce new perspectives on topics in the fields of traditional and computational musicology, music librarianship, and scholarly editing, as well as in the broader area of digital humanities. You are cordially invited to participate in the Music Encoding Conference 2013 – Concepts, Methods, Editions, to be held 22-24 May, 2013, at the Mainz Academy for Literature and Sciences in Mainz, Germany.

Rhetoric, between the theory and practice of politics

As one of the consequences of the lingering process of corrosion of the rationalist assumptions of the Enlightenment project, in the last decades we have witnessed an attempt in different areas of the humanities to revive the central role rhetoric used to have in Antiquity. Despite its political origins, however, the contribution of political theory to this important endeavour has only come of late, as more and more theorists have started to expose the rhetorical nature of politics in multiple manners: showing how it can be used to offer more sophisticated accounts of public deliberation, more attentive toward emotive aspects and contexts; or revealing it as an important manifestation of practical reason; or studying its presence in canonical thinkers and critical moments in the history of political thought; or finally, taking it as an inspiring source for a post-foundationalist emancipatory political theory.

Visiting Professorships at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 2013-2015 The deadline for all professorship applications is January 15, 2013. Two professorships are available at the Courtauld Institute to present the best recent scholarship on historical American art. A twelve-week professorship requires administering one full-term course integrated with the institute’s curriculum and participating in other scholarly activities. A one-week intensive professorship entails a public scholarly event, a seminar, and a special visit to a London gallery, archive, collection, or library relevant to American art history. Sixth Plenary Conference of Tensions of Europe

This conference will be devoted to the complex relationship between democracy and technology from a European and transnational perspective. The core of this reflection will be the complementarities and cross-fertilization that arise in the interaction of technology and democracy, but also the frictions, tensions, and paradoxes that emerge in the discourses, representations and interplay of actors. This historical conference is open to a wide range of interdisciplinary inquiry. It invites proposals for papers addressing an issue that up to now has mainly been investigated on a national basis. Focusing on circulations and appropriations of technology in a European and transnational perspective, the conference should open new ways to think and talk about the history of Europe.

Climat et temps : la science comme culture publique

Communication scientifique et son histoire – III

This conference is the third in a series devoted to historical and contemporary perspectives on the communication of science and technology. Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. As with other disciplines studied during the previous conferences, the climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards. Shifting interests within the history of science and the development of environmental history have greatly expanded the field in recent years. The conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on these historiographical developments via a specific focus on the communication of weather and climate from the 18th to the 21st centuries. The conference will address three themes in particular: Commodification of meteorological knowledge, Media, and Historicizing climate history.
