  Democracy, Demography and the East-West Divide in Europe

  Electing a government is what people do in a democracy, but governments also tend to choose the people who will elect them. They do it by designing citizenship laws and electoral laws, by crafting immigration regimes and by employing practices like gerrymandering and voters’ suppression. This four lectures series discusses the ways in which the shrinking ethnocultural majorities in the European Union (EU) member states try to preserve their power and identity in the face of population decline and increasing migration.

  Cultural and market mediations: dangerous digital liaisons?

  The continuous diffusion of digital technology leads to new cultural and market mediations through new media to capture and enhance the attention of the public (Citton, 2014). In the perspective of exploratory conventions, and innovations, the axes developed here intend to think about the novel forms, which guide the concordances as oppositions between the designers, the actors and the receivers of these digital projections. This call for paper is dedicated to understanding and developing interdisciplinary cultural and market mediations approaches. It aims at understanding their dangerous digital liaisons through online advertising and ethics, through the prism of communication and marketing dangerous digital creation, and dangerous digital staging of the territory.

  Imaginary places, real territories

  Territorial imagery and the creation of Dutch identities (1579-1702)

  From the creation of a federal State in 1579 to the temporary disappearance of the Stadholderate in 1702, what role did the visual culture play in the political assertion of a national territory? How does the artist’s gaze on the territory, local or foreign, real or imagined, allows us to understand this rhetoric? How exactly are fantasized or real elements of foreign places integrated in a local visual discourse? What do these images reveal of the public who commissions, buys and looks at them? Within the process of national and territorial construction, how are these territorial perspectives integrated and part of the enrichment of the Dutch identity narrative? Considering the variety of these issues, this symposium aims to shed light on the ways in which Dutch depictions of national and transnational territories participated in the formulation of a shared identity.

  Napoleon’s Legacy in Culture, Art, and Heritage, 1821–2021

  Napoleon Bonaparte died exactly two hundred years ago on a small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. He had spent the last six years of his life in exile on St Helena, removed from political and military power, in the unusual situation of being able to try to shape and preserve his own posthumous legacy. He was, in a way, phenomenally successful. Napoleon is an instantly recognisable name to this day, and despite growing efforts in recent years to critically revise his reputation and highlight his role in issues such as the reinstatement of slavery, he has largely managed to escape the same level of historical censure as other infamous military dictators. This is perhaps partly because his name has become such an adaptable brand, standing for an entire era of people, places, and events, as well as a full two centuries’ worth of art, craft, and consumer commodities. While other events marking the bicentenary of Napoleon’s death have weighed his contributions to legislative, political, and military reform, less work has been done to confront his vast material, visual, and cultural legacy. This workshop therefore brings together researchers and museum and heritage professionals to reflect on the enduring material and visual legacy of Napoleon, what our interpretation and use of it means for the future, as well as how it affects our understanding of the past.

  Picturing Prehistory in American Art and Visual Culture

  Atlantis, pre-Columbian “Mound Builders,” cave men locked in combat with T. Rex — visions of ancient, ruined, or “lost” worlds on a spectrum between fact and fantasy have long fascinated American artists and producers of visual culture. How have U.S. artists and image makers depicted prehistory, and to what ends? How have visualizations of prehistory from the eighteenth century to 1980 contributed to new conceptualizations of culture, time, and space? For this two-day conference, we invite papers examining images of prehistory, in different media and in both artistic and nonartistic contexts.

  Thinking the production of racism in contemporary migrations

  Perspectives from Chile and Latin America

  Organisée par l’université de Temuco, les membres du projet Anillo de la chaire « Racisme et migrations » de la Universidad de Chile, le pôle cône sud de l’Institut des Amériques et l’Institut français du Chili, en lien avec les postes de la coopération scientifique et universitaire française dans le cône sud, la troisième édition de la journée doctorale France-Amérique latine (JDFA) s’intéressera, les 8 et 9 juillet 2021, à la thématique des migrations. L’analyse des politiques restrictives en matière migratoire montre de quelle façon se produit et se manifeste le racisme. Ces politiques ont une influence sur la trajectoire des personnes migrantes, depuis le départ du pays d’origine jusqu’à l’arrivée dans le pays récepteur. La journée destinée à des étudiants de posgrado, créera un espace pour penser tant la diversité des discriminations (institutionnelles, administratives, quotidiennes, …) que leurs causes, expérimentées par les migrants dans le monde et en particulier en Amérique latine.
