Tools and Methods for the History of Churches between East and West (5th-19th century)
This doctoral workshop will make it possible to relate compartmentalized historiographies even though they share a central and strong object, the Church, which is often treated only as a backdrop to history. The participants who will take part in this school will have the opportunity to see combined diverse and complementary approaches: social, normative, liturgical, political, orientalist. The participants will have access to the methods, the problematization and the last achievements of these different interdisciplinary approaches in the long term.

Cet atelier doctoral de cinq jours permettra d’interroger la place des minorités dans des espaces et des temps divers. Alors que l’Europe n’en finit pas de se confronter à la question de la place qu’elle peut et qu’elle veut faire à des minorités extrêmement diverses (nationales, ethniques, religieuses, immémorialement implantées ou à peine arrivées, etc.), il paraît nécessaire de réfléchir aujourd’hui à la place des minorités sur la longue durée et de manière critique – c’est-à-dire, d’abord, en soumettant à une réflexion critique la notion de « minorité », trop couramment acceptée sans examen.

"Aiutando l’arte". Inscriptions in Tridentine decors in Italy
La dépréciation du recours aux inscriptions par la théorie artistique du Cinquecento se voit tempérée lors du Concile de Trente par la volonté ecclésiastique d'un encadrement des pratiques de l'image. Pour comprendre les enjeux et explorer les modalités de cette revalorisation momentanée du rôle didactique de l'écrit au sein de l'image, cette journée d'étude sera consacrée à l’importance, à la place, aux types, aux formes et enfin aux fonctions des inscriptions et écritures qui font retour en nombre dans les décors religieux monumentaux d’Italie pendant la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle et au début du XVIIe siècle.

History and power under socialism
The profession of historian, l’historiography and its public usage in the Communist régimes of Eastern Europe
Pendant plus de quarante ans, l’écriture de l’histoire dans les pays de l’Europe de l’Est a été fortement conditionnée par les impératifs de propagande des régimes communistes. L’histoire a été instrumentale pour ces régimes car, plus que toutes les autres disciplines humanistes, elle offrait des justifications, et donc une légitimité, au pouvoir. Étudier la relation entre l’histoire et le pouvoir à cet égard signifie pénétrer dans l’histoire des socialismes réels, de leurs objectifs, stratégies, tactiques, entre fracture avec le passé et continuité, ainsi qu’approfondir les relations que les historiens et les institutions de recherche entretenaient avec la politique.

The commission (XIIIth-XVIIth centuries): actors, contracts and productions
Every piece can be studied through its commission. The conditions of pieces commission in late Middle Ages and early modern period started a long series of studies in the domain of the History of Arts. The multidisciplinary approach led by our PhD meetings brings us to enlarge the field of the study focusing on the different types of artistic production, be they painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theatre, dance, literature or philosophy. Contributions will focus on every kind of production, material or immaterial, lasting or not, preserved or not.

The last decades have seen an increase in the number of publications concerned with the theme of trans-textuality, meaning the conscious reuse of themes and subjects. A widespread practice during the seventeenth and eighteenth century, trans-textuality was interrupted during the Romantic age only to be relentlessly resumed until becoming, today, a real trend in literature and other arts, overlapping genres and artistic expressions.

Youth, ethnicity and school policies: a cross national approach in France and in Italy

In order to guarantee the same chances of success for all students, irrespective of their origins and belonging, the management of cultural and religious pluralism is one of the most important challenges of education systems today. In the European context, France and Italy represent two interesting and even emblematic case studies because of the differences in educational policies for the reception, insertion and management of immigrants and immigrant children’s. Despite these disparities, one element which is common to these two countries is the difficulty to manage this cultural pluralism, both from an individual point of view (representations, success rates, strategies of choice of pupils but also educational eams) who could trigger mechanisms of discrimination, and from the point of view of collective actors and institutions (school policies, public and private schools, government services).

The diplomacy of literature in the 18th century: France-Italy
Au Siècle des Lumières, les diplomates eurent une fonction décisive de médiateurs culturels de haut niveau dans plusieurs domaines culturels, tels que la circulation des livres, les études sur l’antiquité, la production artistique, l’activité de traduction, l’édition. Ce colloque, parrainé par les Sociétés française et italienne d’étude du dix-huitième siècle, entend inscrire les profils de quelques protagonistes de ce système d’échanges dans une cartographie européenne et d’étudier le fonctionnement de ces réseaux qui favorisèrent la diffusion de nouveaux paradigmes politiques, philosophiques et scientifiques au cœur d’un débat supranational.

Se l’importanza di Agostino per alcuni autori trecenteschi italiani è fatto auto-evidente, basti pensare a Francesco Petrarca che lo scelse come suo inquisitore e guida spirituale nel Secretum, la lunga durata di questa influenza nel corso del secolo è ancora in gran parte da esplorare, a partire dal caso più contestato, quello di Dante Alighieri. Parallelamente questo convegno s’interesserà al modo in cui l’attività dei membri dell’OESA ha plasmato la vita culturale peninsulare nel corso del secolo e contribuirà a rimettere in questione le categorie storiografiche di agostinismo e anti-agostinismo.

The italian fascism through the prism of contemporary arts
Reinterpretations, montages, deconstructions
In a more or less explicit way, daily news bring to our attention the survival of forms and values which rely on fascist imagery. Thinking about fascism through the prism of contemporary arts means to deal with a term whose significance has to be read at least in a double sense: on one hand, the historical experience of the regime that ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943; on the other hand, by extension, the very form of totalitarian power. Contemporary arts’ gaze seems to work on these two different albeit related topics: the Italian fascism as historical event (faced with all the troubles of its memories), and the fascism as the fundamental process of power’s relationship and rituals.

Status and Social Conditions under the Risk of Social Demotion
Western and Southern Europe, 16th to Early 19th centuries
Le déclassement social est aujourd’hui un défi politique majeur pour les sociétés occidentales et un objet d’études central pour les sciences sociales. L’historiographie des sociétés d’Ancien Régime s’est davantage intéressée à la mobilité ascendante qui était aussi plus productrice de sources, elle a néanmoins abordé le phénomène du déclassement à travers l’étude des cas de dérogeances de la noblesse, celle des pauvres honteux et des institutions d’assistance. Ce colloque entend se pencher sur les discours tenus sur le déclassement en interrogeant l’usage de catégories d’analyse mobilisées par les historiens pour étudier les sociétés anciennes.

La deleuziana, a journal that desires
This issue on Earth-Refrain War Machines seeks to analyse war machine refrains in their relations to the Earth. This gives rise, among others, to the following concerns. Firstly, we’d like to return to Deleuze and Guattari’s characterisation of the different ages of the Earth and more specifically ask, in the hope of better understanding those ages and ours, if there is a refrain proper to modernity, and if so what it could be. Secondly, what should we think of the promises and dangers of the re-enactment of Romanticism? Are we not living at a time when Romantic refrains are being reinvested in the fight against the shock doctrine? Thirdly, acknowledging the recent rise of diverse reactionary and authoritarian powers, what have we to say about today’s capitalist and neo-fascist refrains? What’s new about them and therefore how should we distinguish them from their past actualisation? Lastly, but maybe most importantly, which clinical perspective are we left with? For instance, how can we move toward greater pluralism and what hope can we have for the intersectional potentialities of transversality?

Cette manifestation examine une modalité essentielle du gouvernement royal, passé un seuil territorial de domination et d’éloignement de l’agent, où l’enjeu est l’effectivité de la décision : qu’est-ce qui lie l’officier en charge d’une mission spéciale, d’un territoire particulier, à la volonté royale ? Qu’est-ce qui anime l’unité d’un appareil administratif évoluant à l’échelle de vastes principautés, et surtout la maintient ? Comment tenir ses officiers ? Quels rôles jouent le gage, la solde et les rémunérations matérielles ? Par là, comment se représente-t-on l’organisation administrative et ses rouages ? Le modèle organiciste est-il là aussi à l’œuvre ? C’est la cohésion de tout appareil d’État et sa capacité à agir sur le réel qui irrigue chacune de ces interrogations.

Ludovico Ariosto - satires and life
Ludovico Ariosto: le Satire e la vita
L’interprétation des Satires semble, depuis des décennies et malgré de nombreuses contributions originales (Floriani, Corsaro, Berra, Villa, etc.), conditionnée par les brillantes lectures de Santorre Debenedetti (dont l’article fondateur, Intorno alle Satire dell’Ariosto, date de 1944) et de son neveu et disciple Cesare Segre, auteur de la magistrale édition critique du texte (ses notes remontent aux Opere minori de 1954). Pour une part au moins, suivant en cela une habitude critique extrêmement ancienne, Debenedetti et Segre tendaient à demander au texte de fournir des données biographiques et historiques qui servaient ensuite de base pour interpréter et comprendre, y compris d’un point de vue strictement littéraire, la poésie satirique ariostesque.La recherche historique sur le milieu des Este ou sur Ferrare a beaucoup progressé, et il semble donc urgent de relire les Satires à la lumière de ces nouvelles approches et connaissances.
