Cooperative systems in mountain regions
With its international Year of Cooperatives (IYC) in 2012, the United Nations acknowledged the worldwide impact of cooperatives on economic and social development. Thanks to their democratic organisational structure and their economic outlook, in many mountain regions cooperatives contribute significantly to the growth of social capital, social integration, worksite creation, and the reduction of poverty. This serves to help stabilizing economic cycles and strengthen local employment. Several mountain regions as for example in Italy and Austria have a historic tradition and also a relevant presence of cooperative systems. Furthermore one can register a growth of cooperatives in times of economic crises (EURICSE, 2010).

From « Traditional » Games to Digital Games
Since the early 2000’s, the importance of studying digital games has increased to take a significant place in the academic literature dedicated to entertaining phenomena, to such a point that many articles offering to make an inventory of current “game studies” primarily focus on work related to games on this media. In this context, we cannot ignore the fact that work aimed at conceiving and studying digital games is also regularly referred to as reflections on (non-digital) “traditional” games, whether to build their theoretical framework, or to conduct comparative and contrastive studies. According to us, this kind of mutual lighting encourages researchers to examine the peculiarities and complementarities of the two areas, as well as the theoretical interest of connecting or of confronting them. Therefore, in order to analyse the relations established between “traditional” games and digital games, this call is divided into five themes that give a broad overview of the different kinds of possible links. All types of research, fundamental or applied, as well as disciplinary approaches are welcome.

Annual International Conference / Sciences Po Paris / May 19th and 20th 2014
The conference seeks to create a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue between students coming from European and foreign universities. The project was initially driven by the feeling that legal scholarship has remained largely silent in the aftermath of the economic crisis, especially concerning the role of lawyers and legal templates. Another underlying impetus is the concern over the relative absence of European legal scholarship in debates concerning cutting-edge global governance issues. The challenge is to explore how European legal thought can help to understand problems brought about by globalization. This year the conference will be held in Sciences Po Paris on May 19th and 20th 2014.

Paul Ricoeur: Thinker of the Margins?

Conflicts & Social Violence in an Uncertain Interconnected World
Panel 033 EASA 2014. Collaboration, Intimacy & Revolution - innovation and continuity in an interconnected world
This panel wants to question the issue of ordinary violence and its dynamics in interconnected but uncertain contemporary societies. Whatever their shape, these social violence appear to be very different from spectacular collective forms of political or economical violence. Ordinary violence is violence experienced by ordinary people in their ordinary everyday lives. Occurring everywhere, they are ordinary and daily routine though always culturally or locally specific in their achievements. They take place in relationships or interactions undermined by power abuse or exploitation. Previous studies have focused on the social construction of ordinary violence in ‘face to face’ interactions. But, the kind of ordinary violence springing from distant interconnections and from a growing feeling of uncertainty has not been suited as such. Then, it is from these contexts that we want to investigate anew the issue of ordinary social conflicts and violence.

Slavery in Africa: Past, legacies and Present
International Conference, Nairobi, Kenya October 27, 28 & 29 2014
In Africa, the effects of slavery and slave trade are still alive and there is no doubt in their historical importance and weight in the relationships between the various components of African societies in general, and in particular, the process of building nation-states. Legacies of Slavery are numerous, diverse, sometimes painful and extremely sensitive. Important efforts have been made in African research, primarily in the study of the Atlantic slave trade, but also to some degree, the Indian Ocean islands shaped by plantation labour. However, while the voices of memory are strong in countries such as Senegal and Benin, they are just emerging in East Africa today. The question of slavery in history, its legacies and presence in African societies are at the heart of this conference which is expected to contribute to its entry into the domain of recent public debates.

Renovatio, inventio, absentia imperii
From the Roman Empire to Contemporary Imperialism
At the heart of the present conference will be the ‘reception’, ‘Nachleben’ or ‘permanence’ of the Roman Empire, of an idea and a historical paradigm which since Classical Antiquity has supported the most widespread claims to obtain and consolidate power. The focus will be on ‘culture’, this latter concept intended in a broad sense, i.e. including not only the arts, architecture, literature etc., but also philosophy, religion and, most importantly, discourse. As such, a wide array of themes will be subjected to academic scrutiny. Whereas the main focus will be on Europe and North America, this conference will also reach out towards non-Western contexts, whether or not directly related to the Roman example.

Food Security and the Contemporary World
In view of the interpretations suggested by all these studies, the special issue of Contemporanea aims to engage in a reflection on food security in the widest sense of the term, which includes the political and economic choices made by institutions, relations between states, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, the connection between the availability of food and international stability. We also intend to look at the circulation of cultures and practices within the transnational space that historically defines the relationship between food, health, individual and collective well-being.

Thematic issue of the Hungarian Historical Review 2014/4
The social interactions of individuals and groups belonging to different denominations was and is one of the everyday experiences of social manifestations of otherness. Ever since the Middle Ages, Central Europe has been home to various and varying religious and ethnic groups who have lived side by side. The region has been a meeting point for the Latin, Orthodox, Islamic, Christian, and Jewish worlds, and the Reformation made it even more religiously diverse. We encourage the submission of papers that examine the phenomena of religious and cultural diversity in the region from the perspectives of political history and the history of ideas, and we are particularly interested in submissions that address the social, economic, and cultural aspects of religiously and denominationally diverse coexistence.

Interactional Competences in Institutional Practices 14
Institutionally appropriate communication is a major issue in organizations today. The ability to interact within institutional contexts represents a set of practices society members have available for sharing information and communicating, complaining, negotiating, solving problems, bringing off specific tasks, transmitting knowledge and learning. Responsive to context-specific motivations and at the same time transcending any specific interaction, interactional competences are not abstract abilities but are constructed within rich interactional environments, assessed and interpreted according to collectively shared and valid principles.

The Transnationalization of Religion through Music
The transnationalization of religion refers to the relocalization of beliefs, rituals and religious practices beyond state lines, in real or symbolic spaces, with the help of new imaginaries and narrative identities. Although the analysis of religious transnationalization has revealed the various ways religion transcends borders, the role of music in this process is rarely addressed. Yet this role is essential in the transnationalization of universal religions like Islam and Christianity. Music also contributes to the migration of local religions, neotraditionalist movements, and cults associated with a particular area, such as Haitian Voodoo, Cuban Santería, or Brazilian Candomble. Such musical phenomena, far from being new, gave birth to early religious globalizations. -
