  Medieval Textuality and its material display

  The International Medieval Society organizes its 13^th Annual Symposium in Paris, on the theme of Words in the Middle Ages. Between the increasing use of paperless media forms and the rise in the number of digital collections, medievalists are seeking to adapt to these new means of producing knowledge about the Middle Ages. At the same time, scholars in this field are also trying to outline the methodological and historical issues that affect the study of words, which now simultaneously exist in the form of primary sources, codices, rolls, charters and inscriptions, digitally reproduced images, and the statistical and lexicographical data made possible by storage platforms and analytical tools.

  Abraham Ibn Ezra, a Twelfth-Century Polymath who Straddled Arabic, Hebrew and Latin Culture

  In the middle of the eighth century, with the completion of the Islamic conquest of the eastern, northern and part of the western shores of the Mediterranean, Jews managed to successfully integrate into the ruling society without losing their religious and national identity. They willingly adopted the Arabic language, spoke Arabic fluently, wrote Arabic in Hebrew letters (Judeo-Arabic), and employed Arabic in the composition of their literary works. The twelfth century witnessed a cultural phenomenon that saw Jewish scholars gradually abandon the Arabic language and adopt Hebrew, previously used almost exclusively for religious and liturgical purposes, for the first time as a vehicle for the expression of secular and scientific ideas.

At least since the end of the last century, the production, circulation, management, and reproduction of feeling practices have become some of the basic features of education, health care, knowledge production, the mass media, the entertainment industry, sexuality, politics, and the market - just to mention some of the most publicly “visible” ones. It is in this context that  we have considered it desirable to bring together researchers and academics dealing with various aspects relating to the topic of sensibilities.

The workshop will take place at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), 29-30 September 2016. Much has been written on wages within economics. In his classical account of the history ofwage theory, Dunlop (1957) refers to three time-periods: the wage-fund theory domination,the rise of marginal productivity distribution theory, and the “contemporary setting”, startingin the 1930s and characterized by a diversity of theoretical arguments; but much has changed.

  The Aix Summer School on Prosody 2016 will bring together experts on theoretical and practical aspects of the research on prosody. The school will be organized around morning lectures and afternoon tutorials (where participants will practice concepts and skills discussed in lectures) and data clinics (where participants can bring together their own data and questions for discussion). The school is intended for post-graduate students and researchers interested in all the theoretical and practical aspects of the research on prosody and intonation. The school will be suitable both for researchers already working on intonation and prosody, and wishing to learn more about specific topics, and for researchers who wish to better understand how to incorporate and control prosody in their own work.

  Myth and Emotions

  Along with rational logic there is an emotional logic, responsible for many actions that we carry out. Myth Criticism tends to tackle mythical stories from a structural, social and historical perspective. However, it often ignores the emotional component. It seems as if the affective dimension, particularly active in our contemporary society, is not considered relevant in the studies of mythology. The Conference will examine the function undertaken by emotions in the structure of mythical stories and in the processes of mythification of characters and historical events. The object of the study will focus on ancient, medieval and modern myths in contemporary literature and art (since 1900).

  Geoarchaeology, defined as the application of geosciences and geographical methods to prehistory, archaeology, and history, is now widely applied to study key subjects such as occupation patterns, territory and site exploitation, palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironemental, and palaeogeographical changes, as well as anthropogenic impacts and system responses. The multidisciplinary and multiscalar dimensions of geoarchaeological approaches have encouraged continuous development and innovation of methods and approaches that have opened new possibilities for explorations in geographical sectors previously inaccessible, the development of large-scale data acquisitions and treatment, and also the development of microscopic scale analysis precision. This session will highlight global research in geoarchaeology with particular emphasis on innovative methods or cutting edge research using established approaches.

  For this seventh International Symposium on Staging America, we invite scholars to explore the various ways in which American bodies have been staged and represented throughout history and through various media. From P.T. Barnum’s freak shows to modern-day tattoo conventions, from Carson McCullers’ and Flannery O’Connor’s grotesque characters to twenty-first century sideshows, bodies have always been a source of both attraction and repulsion. The fascination triggered by deformities – whether natural or self-inflicted – reveals as much about Americans’ conceptions of normality, hence of identity, as it does about the nature of the body itself.

  The open data movement, which emerged in the USA and the UK in 2009, refers to an organization’s making some of its data (transport, weather, health, public markets, etc.) accessible for reuse by businesses or the public. In France, for example, the state makes its data available, start-ups are building innovative services based on open data and historical actors have opened their data to their ecosystem.

  The conference seeks to examine the shaping of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century in relation to artistic training and exchanges between artists and scholars. The development of art history has been associated with an array of socio-political and economic factors such as the formation of a bourgeois public, the politics of national identity and state legitimacy or the needs of an expanding art market. This conference aspires to explore yet another, less studied dimension: the extent to which the historical study of art was also rooted in an intention to inform contemporary artistic production.
