Conference, symposium - Representation

New shape of sharing: networks, expertise, information
A forum on current issues in European librarianship
The New Shape of Sharing: Networks, Expertise, Information continues conversations begun at the New Directions Symposium held in Frankfurt in 2017. This multi-day forum of panel presentations, a poster session, and interactive breakout sessions on key issues facing Western European collections and public services will encourage both structured and unstructured debate. We will advance our understanding of the challenges and initiate action in three areas: design new models for collaborative collection development and services; explore a growing range of content and format types and what they mean for libraries and researchers, and highlight the evolving role of libraries and librarians in the research process.

The issue of living together in teaching training. From policies to practices

The interiors of Art nouveau period : analyse, restore, make accessible
The Réseau Art Nouveau Network, a European network for the study, protection and enhancement of the Art Nouveau heritage, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Urban.brussels, founding member of RANN, is hosting an international symposium in Brussels, co- organised by RANN and urban.brussels in partnership with the Horta Museum and CIVA. If Art Nouveau is accessible to everyone in the street itself and while the Art Nouveau facades are the ornament of many European cities, the interiors arouse both from the academic world as from the general public many questions related to their accessibility, to their knowledge, to the refined restorations that they require. The aim of this symposium is to bring about a confrontation on research practices, understanding, conservation and enhancement of Art Nouveau interiors, in order to identify new research perspectives.

Conference, symposium - Information
University Museums and their Publics
University museums are still mainly visited by an insufficiently diverse audience limited to researchers/students/professors and a few families or informed amateurs. During this colloquium, we will address the reasons for this conjuncture and ask the nowadays practices of our university institutions: elitist speech? Dusty scenography? Not adapted communication means? University showcase? Too little known or heterogeneous collections? This colloquium aims in inviting university authorities and collection managers to engage a global thinking on their audience approach policy.

Integrating Gender in the History of Humanitarian aid: Europe (20th –21st century)

The Legacies of Ursula K. Le Guin: Science, Fiction and Ethics for the Anthropocene
Planetary ethics and aesthetics, interspecies communities, post-gender and anarchist societies, indigenous knowledge, vegetal sentience... The paths Ursula K. Le Guin has opened for our imagination to travel are numerous, subtle itineraries through which we might find ways to better inhabit the 21st century. The international bilingual conference “Le Guin's Legacies” will engage with her work from a multiplicity of perspectives, tracing its literary, ecological, philosophical, socio-economical and anthropological ramifications: its potential for re-engineering the world we live in.

The protection of cultural heritage in Europe and Rhineland
Franziskus Count Wolff Metternich and the Kunstschutz during the Second World War

Risk, Violence, and Collective Agency
This colloquium will assemble a multidisciplinary group of literary scholars, philosophers, sociologists and historians to explore the interrelation of concepts of risk, violence, and collective agency. Participants will do so in a number of literary, historical and geographical contexts, such as Rimbaud’s or Zola’s Paris, Dostoevsky’s or Mandelstam’s Russia, or the 16th century French religious wars and the Armenian genocide. Conversations will engage the critical and philosophical work of Hobbes, Goethe, Arendt, Berlin, Derrida or Balibar. What is at stake is how theories of risk and collective agency might reveal new ways of understanding not only acts of violence or massacre, nihilism and collective political affect, collective will and democracy, or totalitarianism and genocide, but also the complexities of their aesthetic, literary, historiographical or sociological representations.

Creation Workshops

Materialities and devotion (5th-15th centuries)
V Medieval Europe in motion
The last decades have witnessed the development of studies on material culture, favouring an inter- and multidisciplinary approach. This has enabled a more cohesive reading of the way in which the medieval Man related to his material environment, manipulating, adapting and transforming it, of the uses given to the objects he produced, the meanings attributed, how he interacted with them in cognitive and affective terms.

Translation and the culinary arts are universal human activities. Both have been practised since time immemorial. They are also eminently cultural. When Larbaud says “you are who you translate” (“Dis moi qui tu traduis, je te dirai qui tu es” – 1946: 95), he is obviously thinking of Brillat-Savarin’s aphorism, “you are what you eat” (“Dis moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai qui tu es” – [1825] 2017, Aphorisme IV, p. 19). Each has long been an object of investigation in the humanities and beyond, and the recent growth of research in the field of Translation Studies has been mirrored in the field of Food Studies. It seems curious that the complementary areas of investigation have not been combined more often. We have therefore decided to marry these two ingredients at an international conference to be held at the University of Lille, France, from 18 to 20 March 2020.

Pop Culture in the Arabian Peninsula
Arabian Humanities No. 14 (Spring 2020)
The literature on pop culture in the Arabian Peninsula is particularly thin. While a rich scholarship has analyzed oral culture and vernacular poetry, less ink was spilled on those forms of culture that use new media, from tape recording to mobile phone aps and from TV production to YouTube. This issue of Arabian Humanities seeks to fill that gap and to analyze pop culture in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
