  The protection of cultural heritage in Europe and Rhineland

  Franziskus Count Wolff Metternich and the Kunstschutz during the Second World War

  Ce colloque traitera de la protection du patrimoine culturel en Europe et en Rhénanie. Franziskus comte Wolff Metternich (1893-1978), conservateur provincial et du Land de Rhénanie entre 1928 et 1950, et directeur du Kunstschutz dans les territoires occupés pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, joue par son activité un rôle important dans la réflexion sur la protection des biens culturels au XX^e siècle. Le colloque se propose de présenter les résultats rassemblés par un projet de recherche de trois ans sur les sources du Kunstschutz et sur le réseau de Wolff Metternich, projet implanté au sein du LVR -AFZ (Archivberatungs- und Fortbildungszentrum du Landschaftsverband Rheinland / Centre de conseil et de formation en archives des autorités régionales de Rhénanie).

  Risk, Violence, and Collective Agency

  This colloquium will assemble a multidisciplinary group of literary scholars, philosophers, sociologists and historians to explore the interrelation of concepts of risk, violence, and collective agency. Participants will do so in a number of literary, historical and geographical contexts, such as Rimbaud’s or Zola’s Paris, Dostoevsky’s or Mandelstam’s Russia, or the 16^th century French religious wars and the Armenian genocide. Conversations will engage the critical and philosophical work of Hobbes, Goethe, Arendt, Berlin, Derrida or Balibar. What is at stake is how theories of risk and collective agency might reveal new ways of understanding not only acts of violence or massacre, nihilism and collective political affect, collective will and democracy, or totalitarianism and genocide, but also the complexities of their aesthetic, literary, historiographical or sociological representations.

  Culinary Translation

  Translation and the culinary arts are universal human activities. Both have been practised since time immemorial. They are also eminently cultural. When Larbaud says “you are who you translate” (“Dis moi qui tu traduis, je te dirai qui tu es” – 1946: 95), he is obviously thinking of Brillat-Savarin’s aphorism, “you are what you eat” (“Dis moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai qui tu es” – [1825] 2017, Aphorisme IV, p. 19). Each has long been an object of investigation in the humanities and beyond, and the recent growth of research in the field of Translation Studies has been mirrored in the field of Food Studies. It seems curious that the complementary areas of investigation have not been combined more often. We have therefore decided to marry these two ingredients at an international conference to be held at the University of Lille, France, from 18 to 20 March 2020.

  The literature on pop culture in the Arabian Peninsula is particularly thin. While a rich scholarship has analyzed oral culture and vernacular poetry, less ink was spilled on those forms of culture that use new media, from tape recording to mobile phone aps and from TV production to YouTube. This issue of Arabian Humanities seeks to fill that gap and to analyze pop culture in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

  Meeting with the writer Pablo Landeo and the presentation of his Quechua language novel "Aqupampa"

  L'association Amériques de l'INALCO en partenariat avec l'ambassade du Pérou en France proposent une rencontre avec l'écrivain Pablo Landeo Muñoz et la présentation de son roman en quechua Aqupampa. Carlos Amézaga, ministre conseiller à l’ambassade du Pérou, prononcera un discours d’ouverture. La présentation du roman sera faite par César Itier (INALCO). Elle sera suivie d’un dialogue avec l’auteur Pablo Landeo Muñoz et d’une lecture d’extraits du roman (surtitrés en français). Cette rencontre sera clôturée par un concert de musique andine proposé par le groupe Paris Andes.
