Critically assessing the projects and politics underpinning the Smart City Mission
Following on a first meeting devoted to India’s Smart City Mission held in September 2018, the specific aim of this international workshop is to focus on issues of social and environmental sustainability. On the basis of field-based investigations, the presenters will critically assess the smart city experiments as they unfold. Among the questions to be discussed are the following: How does India’s engagement with smart cities compare with other international cases? To what extent do projects in India draw on cutting-edge technologies? How can we characterize the governance and politics of India’s engagement with ‘smart urbanism’?

The volume will critically explore how processes related to religious urbanization intersect with different notions of development in African contexts. Cities are taken to be powerful venues for the creation and implementation of models of development whose moral, temporal, and political assumptions need to be examined, not least as they intersect with religious templates for the planning and reform of urban space.

L’objectif de ce colloque est de mesurer le rôle des espaces de sociabilité du long dixhuitième siècle dans la formation des sociétés européennes et postcoloniales. Cette approche fournira un prisme original et diachronique, permettant une meilleure compréhension de leurhéritage, dans la mesure où la sociabilité a contribué à donner un cadre aux interactions sociales des temps modernes et à redéfinir l’organisation spatiale des siècles à venir. Ces espaces de sociabilité ont-ils survécu au 21e siècle ? Jusqu’à quel point ont-ils été reconfigurés dans leurs dimensions sociales, culturelles et politiques ? Dans quelle mesure ces espaces, dévolus à l’interaction humaine, ont-ils été transformés ou redessinés par les architectes d’aujourd’hui ou par les urbanistes par exemple ?

Les mots de la diffusion urbaine
Drawing on different historical and geographical contexts, academic literature has produced since the 1960sa rich lexicon in various languages to analyse the global phenomenon of the territorial diffusion of urbanization. Just to mention a few: périurbain, sprawl (Gottman, 1967), suburbia (Fishman, 1987), desakota (McGee, 1989), exurbia (Nelson, 1992), Città diffusa (Indovina, 1990), post-suburbs (Phelps and Wu, 2011), Zwischenstadt (Sieverts, 2004). The reason of this prolific and bourgeoning literature in the field of urbanstudies is that the territorial diffusion of urbanization leads to reconsider the relationship between urbanismand territories. This workshop aims to examine this lexicon with the purpose of questioning the conceptual,disciplinary, and methodological frameworks that have oriented knowledge production on urbanization processesing different contexts and historical moments.

Municipalisation et gestion urbaine au Mozambique
Le Mozambique est encore très largement géré par l'administration de l'État central: il n'y a que 58 municipalités, toutes urbaines. La questionne est donc très politique, puisque toute avancée de la municipalisation permet à l'opposition d'acquérir plus de poids, même si le parti au pouvoir garde le contrôle sur la majorité d'entre elles. Ce colloque international aura lieu une dizaine de jours après la tenue des élections municipales d'octobre 2018, qui seront un test grandeur nature pour les élections présidentielles et législatives de l'année suivante...

Voyage et cosmopolitisme : De l’île au monde
Avec cette rencontre nous souhaitons promouvoir l’étude et la réflexion autour du Voyage et du Cosmopolitisme, notamment par le biais des relations inter et transculturelles. Le croisement des différents savoirs et des différents champs disciplinaires, non seulement des sciences humaines mais aussi des sciences sociales, permettront de traiter de multiples problématiques, telles que l’héritage culturel, la globalisation de la culture, l’identité, la citoyenneté. Partant de l’éthique de « reliance », telle qu’elle est définie par Edgar Morin, les littératures, les arts et les autres langages scientifiques peuvent questionner et mettre en rapport les singularités universelles, suivant, par exemple, les études développées par Alain Badiou.

Writing the city [into the urban]
In the aftermath of the May 1968 uprising in Paris, Henri Lefebvre published in 1970 his classic treatise La Révolution Urbaine where he pointedly placed the urban in the centre of this revolution, identifying a theoretical need for the concept of the urban as a planetary possibility, one he considered more appropriate than a redundant notion of the city as a social scientific object. This workshop is a step in this direction where, coming 50 years after the backlash of ’68, this event aims to establish a conversation between the city and the urban by drawing on the notion of "ethnographic theorisation" where the theoretical potential of the urban can be harnessed from ethnographic insights of the city. It explores contingent ways in which the city can be written into the urban through manoeuvres that engage with the process of writing the city across disciplines from literary cultures to urban studies

Le colloque sera international et interdisciplinaire. Le sujet est à interpréter de manière large, afin d’inclure des écrivains et artistes contemporains de Zola, des analyses génétiques, politico-historiques et sociologiques aussi bien que des études de l’œuvre de Zola. Les invités d’honneur seront Professeur Henri Mitterand, Madame Martine Le Blond Zola et Madame Monique Sicard. Parmi les activités proposées il y aura une exposition, une visite du Musée de la mine de Lewarde et une sortie sur les pas de Zola à Anzin.

Théories et modèles de l'urbanisation
ERC GeoDiverCity International Workshop
L'atelier international "Théories et modèles de l'urbanisation" aura lieu les jeudi 12 et vendredi 13 octobre à Paris, avec des contributions (en anglais) d'économistes et de géographes comme Michael Storper, Michael Batty et Fulong Wu, et de modélisateurs des systèmes complexes venus de la physique ou de l'informatique comme Elsa Arcaute, Marc Barthélémy et Romain Reuillon. Leurs présentations seront discutées par une pléiade de spécialistes des villes et des systèmes complexes, afin d'évaluer les résultats de l'ERC GeoDiverCity et d'enrichir par de nouvelles propositions de futurs programmes de recherche. L'atelier se terminera par une table ronde animée par Eric Denis et Denise Pumain.

5eme rencontre international du Réseau Européen d'Histoire de l'Architecture, à Tallinn, juin 2018
This session aims to address, from a historical perspective, the relation between, on one side, architecture and the related disciplines, and on the other side, agriculture and rurality at large. We welcome proposals specifically mapping case studies concerned with large-scale agricultural development and/or colonization schemes conceived and (but not necessarily) implemented in Europe and beyond during modern times (late 18th-20th century), strongly connected to nation- and State-building processes, and to the modernization of the countryside. We are particularly interested in those examples which aimed to “make the difference” in both scale and numbers, entailing radical reshaping of previously uninhabited or sparsely populated areas into new, planned, “total” rural landscapes.

Ce numéro spécial de la revue Contour est ouvert à des travaux de chercheuses et chercheurs de toutes les disciplines, au sein ou aux abords des études urbaines, des sciences sociales, de la philosophie, de l’histoire, de l’art, qui questionnent les personnages et les figures de l’urbain. Le but est de contribuer à une mise en question et un renouvellement de ces figures et personnages, ainsi que de contribuer, de manière plus générale, abstraite, théorique, à penser la figure, la figuration et les personnages.

Urban China and the challenges of sustainability
Medium conference
This is the second international event organised in the context of the Medium project. While research conducted in the context of the project focus primarily on the medium-sized cities Hangzhou, Zhuhai and Datong, the conference will consider urban China in its diversity, with a great variety of case studies including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Tianjin, the region of the Taihu lake etc. It will address the issue of sustainability from a broad perspective, tackling ageing housing, social inclusion, urban governance, environmental sustainability, participatory processes in urban planning, with a multi-disciplinary approach ranging from geography, political science, economy, sociology, computer science, environmental science, etc.

In the face of the current ecological crisis, how shall we rethink concepts and practices of environment, ecology, difference, and technology to envision and create a more just, sustainable, and diverse planet? The combined histories of colonialism, extraction industries, energy, as well as innovation in design, architecture, literature and technology offer a lens by which to examine how contemporary techno-scientific societies envision planetary futures. Site visits exploring resource extraction, colonialism in urban policy and planning, and speculative architectural design will be accompanied by an analysis of science fiction, science technology, speculative design and ethnography, as well as life and earth sciences.

Special session, Sixth EUGEO, congress on the Geography of Europe
Dans le cadre de l'EUGEO 2017 nous proposons une session spéciale sur l'attractivité territoriale et la qualité de vie. Nous proposons d'explorer les façons novatrices de concevoir l’attractivité territoriale. Comment penser l’attractivité en termes innovants ? Comment penser cette innovation autrement qu’en termes de structures de gouvernance ? Comment par exemple innover en termes d’acteurs impliqués, d’indicateurs choisis, de politiques… Bref, trois axes principaux guideront cette session spéciale : stratégies innovantes de l’attractivité territoriale ; qualité de vie, bien-être et attractivité territoriale ; perceptions et représentations territoriales au service de l’attractivité.
