  Between Violence and Legal Protection 1912-1923

  On 9 and 10 March 2017, the Jewish Museum of Belgium in collaboration with CegeSoma organizes  an international colloquium at the Royal Library of Belgium (Brussels). The violence perpetrated against minorities is one key issue, while their legal protection, is another. The conference tackles the period from 1912 to 1923. Lectures by historians from Europe, North America and the Middle East will be alternated with discussions. Attention will also be given to contemporary issues related to these questions.

  The Individual at the Crossroads between the Civilian and Military Worlds

  The symposium theme is merely a guideline, a clue for reflection rather than a well-defined subject. It leads us to question the ways through which individuals – soldiers, civilians at the home front or in occupied territories – integrate and conciliate the military dimension on one side (whether it’s their experience at the front or German presence on the streets of their village) and the civil dimension on the other. In addition to the encounter between the civilian and military “worlds”, constituting two separate spheres, we must reflect upon the individual as being at the crossroads between two dimensions, which jointly construct him or her.

  The theoretical reorientation of literary studies towards their renewed convergence with the “real”, later identified by some as the “spatial turn” (Soja, 1989), started to develop in the literary-theoretical landscape in the middle of the twentieth century, at the moment when key theoreticians in the field of structuralism paid significant attention to the relationship between “literature and reality”, with the aim of insistently denouncing any “referential illusion” (Barthes et al., 1982) and of committing the space of literature to intratextual specularity (Dällenbach, 1977).

  Les changements politiques que connaissent plusieurs pays, surtout arabes, et les périodes de transition politique, font apparaitre la fin du monopole du champ politique par l'État. Les organisations de la société civile s'accaparent de plus en plus de pouvoir de par leurs capacités mobilisatrices. On assiste à l'émergence de nouveaux acteurs civils qui exercent des missions et des rôles autant divers qu'inhabituels, ce qui peut être considéré comme une dépossession des rôles traditionnels de l'État. En fait, la société civile contribue à la rotation des élites, assure une fonction socio-éducative et contribue fortement à consolider le processus démocratique nouvellement initié. Il s'agit de comparer les différentes expériences, d'expliciter les étendues mais aussi d'un autre côté de réfléchir sur le concept de société civile, de clarifier ses contours, de comprendre les polémiques qu'il suscite.

  Profiles compiled from scattered digital footprints left by the user on the Internet shape the outline of digital identities. While the Internet user is alive, he remains in charge of managing these identities, with the help of digital privacy law. Yet as civil rights befall the living, these data protection rights, as such, fall as his death occurs. This international workshop, organised in the frame of the ENEID research project on post-mortem digital identities, will bring together scholars from the field of Information and Communication sciences and from Legal studies, as well as experts working as Data Protection Officers or working for Data Protection Authorities, in order to take a closer look at the fate of personal data after death.

  The roots of the idea of the Renaissance as a time of innovation and revival of learning, wisdom and art after a long period of decline can be traced back to the thought of contemporary groups of intellectuals. This cross-disciplinary international conference proposes to explore the early modern perceived reality of the continuities and the disruptions between the Renaissance and the previous period. By examining the numerous aspects and fields in which this conception of a time that had interposed itself between Antiquity and its renewal manifests, the conference hopes to better clarify the different Renaissance attitudes towards it.

  Since 1998 the “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) organizes an annual workshop in India with the support of international and local partners. Depuis le poststructuralisme, la théorie, notamment littéraire, est devenue experte en matière d'analyse et de remise en question du soubassement idéologique de tout discours. Toutefois, cette « herméneutique du soupçon » (Ricoeur, 1975) se trouve démunie lorsqu'il s'agit d'élaborer une herméneutique « instauratrice de sens » (Ricoeur, 1965) permettant de penser l'humain au-delà de sa matérialité.

  This one-day conference investigates the role of student movements in individual and collective emancipations, from the struggle for colonial liberation to the challenges posed by contemporary globalisation. This conference seeks to bring these various approaches together, in order to discuss the transnational and connected history of student engagements in colonial liberations and the critical reflection on the multilateral management of conflicts in the postcolonial period. It will investigate internal and external tensions, and the reorganisation of these movements in relation to pacifism, revolutionary struggle, conflict prevention and peace making.

  The Resources on the European socio-economic model (RESuME) project, co-funded by the Erasmus+Jean Monnet Action for Institutions and the University of Luxembourg, aims to contribute to the study of the European socio-economic model, its origins, current characteristics and future development. The project focuses on the interaction between society, economic players and public authorities, through the prism of the notion of European competitiveness. It draws on the disciplines of contemporary history, law, economics, political science, political philosophy and sociology. To shed further light on this subject, the RESuME project is creating an innovative new series of scholarly contributions: the ‘State, Society, Market and Europe’ Research Papers (RESuME Papers).

  Dans Cultural Trauma: Slavery and the Formation of African American Identity (2001), Ron Eyerman explore la formation de l'identité africaine-américaine à travers le traumatisme culturel de l'esclavage. Au-delà de son impact direct sur celles et ceux qui ont subi l'esclavage, Eyerman considère qu'en tant que processus culturel, le traumatisme est « transmis par l'intermédiaire de diverses formes de représentation et associé à la formation d'une identité et à la construction d'une mémoire collectives ». Cette conférence internationale cherche à examiner les fondements, les mécanismes et l'étendue de ces processus mémoriels.

  The geometry of medieval images

  On le sait (le sait-on ?), une image, au Moyen-Âge, n’est pas composée selon les règles de la perspective. C’est à la compréhension d’un autre modèle géométrique, sur lequel s’appuyèrent les images médiévales, et qui disparut au cours du XVI^e siècle, que ce colloque sera consacré. Pour quelles raisons ? Les images médiévales ont-elles quelque rapport avec la géométrie ? N’est-ce pas la plus mauvaise manière de parler d’elles, qui s’entêtent à ne pas respecter des règles simples de proportion, qui sont parfois incapables de tracer deux lignes parallèles, et qui souvent n’essaient même pas d’esquisser un paysage un tant soi peu cohérent ? Plutôt que de penser les termes « géométrie » et « espace » d’une manière toujours défaillante par rapport aux images médiévales, nous voudrions les maintenir, quitte à redéfinir ce qu’on appelle, au Moyen Age, une géométrie, un espace ; et une image ?

  Framing Street Art

  Cross-disciplinary International Conference by Nice Street Art Project

  Art is everywhere. You just have to open your eyes and/or decide that something is art. This is what Ernest Pignon-Ernest showed when he glued frames on the walls of Nice, France, from 2004 to 2013. Known for the celebration of the chosen place as a place of poetry and history, the artist used the frame as a sign to reveal the artistic potential of the walls, ie a tool of “artification”. The frame refers to the museum piece, which it encircles, protects and highlights. By definition, street artworks don’t have a physical frame, if by Street Art we mean a self-authorized art situated in the public place or in abandoned places, or any form of site-specific art. Nevertheless, the frame is an essential and problematic question in many regards.
