French colonial empire and the environment (16th-20th centuries)

Uprooting-Rooting: from India to the Caribbean Social, Cultural, Literary and Linguistic Repercussions

While the first indentured Indians arrived in the British-controlled Caribbean in 1845, where slavery was abolished in 1830 in the French territories, the first Indians did not arrive until 1853, since slavery was not abolished there until 1848. Although these two colonial nations (France and Great Britain) were political and economic rivals, when it came to preserving money matters and maintaining a hold on international trade, they were ready to come to terms to pursue “human trade” while naming it differently: indentured labour. The victims of this trade allowed themselves to be seduced by the false promises of recruiting agents in order to escape bad weather and its corollary, famine, but also misery, epidemics and the oppression of the caste system. In particular, they were attracted by the dream of returning home wealthy.

The Global Musical Instrument Market: Making, Trading and Collecting in the 19th Century and the Early 20th Century

Ivory and tropical woods sawn in European factories, pianos exported as far as Oceania, collections brought back from the colonies: the market for musical instruments went global in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rise of trade routes and steam navigation supported the globalization of markets for the raw materials used by instrument makers, whose instruments were exported to every continent, while “exotic” objects enriched museums across Europe, serving the colonial project and the manufacture of musical elsewhere. Historians, musicologists and curators explore the journey of instruments around the world through three themes: collections and empires, trade and manufacture, exchanges and appropriation of sounds.

(The Rise of) TransMedia 'Empires,' 1920s-1960s

    The nearness of architecture

To build for the local community

Currently perceived in a largely positive way, 'nearness' has become a trendy concept, which is also valued in architecture and urban planning : use of bio-based and geo-based materials, return to hand drawing, setting-up of agencies in rural areas, renewed interest in critical regionalism, etc. Far from being new, and also going with a dark side, this notion applied to architecture and urban planning deserve exploration over the long term (18th-21st centuries) in order to enrich and qualify current reflections and practices. The conference aim to bring into dialogue the work of researchers and testimonies from local actors in architecture and territorial planning.

    The world in crisis(es)

The word crisis, derived from the Greek word krisis, means judgment, decision. Conceptually speaking, “a crisis is an illness” (a conceptual metaphor justified diachronically by its etymological meaning of “the decisive phase of an illness”), or “it is a war”, if we focus on the meaning of “an outbreak with violent manifestations”. It is, therefore, a moment of major change. Our societies are plagued by successive and often overlapping crises, enabling them - if not forcing them -  to evolve and transform themselves. The conference will focus on two parallel and complementary themes: “The economic crisis / The economy of the crisis” and “Discourse in a time of crisis”.

(Un)Doing Democracy. Practices of Participation and Contestation (19th–21st Century)

Characterising the field of ‘postcolonial’ studies

This workshop is part of a multidisciplinary international project which aims to create a digital resource portal to assemble the data (documents, publications, works) that make up this field. However, the first difficulty encountered concerns the characterization of the domain of knowledge of these studies, its extent, its limits and the definition of the structuring concepts that constitute it. Compared with other fields of study, the field of postcolonial studies is characterised by a greater diversity and fluidity, as well as resistance to the more traditional national interpretative models. This is because it lies at the crossroads of history, comparative literature and literary theory, as well as sociology.

    Sissi and us: new mythologies

In recent years, the fictional character of Sissi has been reimagined from a feminist perspective. This new appreciation of the character of Sissi owes much to gender studies. It also derives from the interpolation of narratives and fictions about other (modern) princesses such as Lady Diana. Fairy tales are now being put into perspective, and the same goes for historical princesses when represented in fiction. Following this “Sissi turn”, the book will adopt a deliberately transversal and interdisciplinary perspective.

    Street Heritage?

    Comparative Literature, Twenty Years Later

Trans-.

After a first issue dedicated to critical examination of “Contemporary comparative literature studies” in 2005, the journal invites its contributors to provide a new assessment of contemporary comparative literature studies, whose dynamics the Journal has tried to reflect, by showcasing the diversity of approaches used by young scholars in the field, as well as the academic programs in France and abroad. What redefinitions of comparative literature, of its methods and its challenges are we witnessing? How is our discipline renewing our thinking on otherness, relation and connection to the foreign? This call is part of the current epistemological reflection on the contributions of “general and comparative literature,” coupled with a reflective evaluation of the comparative approach itself.

Media at the crossroads between reality and fiction (from Ancient Times till present)

With the growing contemporary concerns about fake news and deep fakes, the questionof the decreasing space between fiction and non-fiction has become central. But at the same time, new genres and hybrids that play a different game are also proliferating: telling the truth underthe guise of fiction, using a fictional guise (the conventions of specific narrative genre) to ‘better’tell the truth as in self-fiction, animated documentaries, etc. The 25th Annual Conference of the French Society for Media History (Société pourl’Histoire des Médias, SPHM) is intended to explore the ambiguous connections andinterrelations between reality and fiction in media productions of any kind, any time period andany country.

    Awareness Drawing

    Methods and pedagogies

For over a century, researchers and clinicians have been interested in using drawings to understand bodily experience. Some of the best known are: Goodenough's drawing of the man (1926) and Palmer's pain charts (1949). Today, there has been a renewal of these techniques through a range of visual materials. Thus, drawing still aims to show what cannot always be said or written. It will also launch a debate on research methodologies.
