Social innovations as sites of resistance and transformation in times of crisis

Since the 1980s, we have borne witness to a succession of crises caused by a dominant economic system that subjects both humans and nature to the dictates of endless growth. The severity of these crises and their consequences have also spurred new social actions. More than ever, there is a need to identify the interstices through which social transformations founded on solidarity, emancipation and new ways of relating to the Earth can operate. The tradition of research on social innovations at CRISES provides the ideal starting point to reflect on social innovations as sites for resistance and social transformation during this period of overlapping crises. It also invites us to break down disciplinary silos and address the complexity of contemporary challenges with cross-cutting and intersectoral approaches that can offer a bridge between research and action. This call for papers draws inspiration from various approaches used to address complex issues in different fields, particularly as regards democratic participation, economics, ecology and technology.

Middlemen in the work relationship in slave and post-slave societies from the 15th century to the present day

    « Esclavages et Post-Esclavages / Slaveries and Post-Slaveries » Journal

This issue examines the long-term situation of Middlemen, both under slavery and in the post-slavery era. Enslaved themselves, overseers, and occasionally even recruiters of workers after the abolition of slavery, these intermediaries in the chain of command of coerced labor were essential to the smooth functioning of the slave and post-slave system. What role did they play? Were they agents of coercion or of worker protection?

Music in the Middle East after the digital revolution

    Journal “Regards”

This issue of the journal Regards (Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth) proposes to investigate the dynamics of musical production and forms of dissemination in the contemporary Near East, particularly through the do it yourself practices that have emerged with the advent of home studios and low-cost listening platforms. The challenge of such a study is thus to confront the different aesthetics of today's music, blending diverse intellectual and cultural heritages, mobilizing the affects of nostalgia and those linked to the historical realities shared by the region's inhabitants. The question of understanding the articulation of musical dynamics with social, political and state boundaries and different contexts of conflict will be explored.

Surrealism and the Americas: new historiographical perspectives

Thematic workshop of the bi-annual Congress of the Institut des Amériques

As we celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of the first Surrealist Manifesto (1924), it is in fact appropriate to revisit this long historiographical tradition that considers this collective adventure as an exclusively French (if not Parisian) one, of the interwar period, centered around the charismatic figure of André Breton. By example of the Americas, we wish to propose a new theoretical definition of the movement in favour of its specific variations and manifestations in order to better question the very notions of centre, periphery, heritage or descendance and, in this way, bring to light the new actors of global Surrealism.

    Post-doctoral fellow in Political Philosophy

The main objective of this project is to compare the modern philosophy of Bildung and the contemporary paradigm of the Learning Society (LS) by systematically analyzing their homological structures. Through this comparison, we aim to expose the important conceptual mutations of the ideal of educational autonomy occurring from the first paradigm to the latter.

Carthusians and Images. New Perspectives on Reli- gious Art and Devotional Culture in the Late Me- dieval and Early Modern Charterhouse

    Langage and (Mis)information

    VocUM 2024

This international conference dedicated to language aims to provide a platform for young researchers to display their findings and foster meaningful discussions across diverse disciplines. The term "information" stems from the Latin formare, whose original meaning roughly translates into the verb “to shape.” It implies in its essence the process of shaping an idea, a representation or a concept. This edition of the conference constitutes an opportunity to examine the different facets of information and disinformation, from transmission to reception, and at every stage in between.

The electoral process in Cameroon as a political dynamic: Actors and Factors

    Collective work

The electoral process in Cameroon is a complex political dynamic, characterized by challenges and controversies, but also by important issues in terms of legitimacy, legitimation and political legality and democracy. Objectifying this issue requires an in-depth analysis of electoral institutions (norms and organs), citizen participation, the challenges encountered and the political implications. The Cameroonian political-electoral process as a political dynamic therefore involves a multitude of factors and actors.

Migrations from Turkey in France: Interdisciplinary State of Research and Comparative Perspectives

The objective of this symposium is to strengthen interdisciplinary dialogue on migrations from Turkey to France and to reinforce an international network of researchers working on this subject. The aim is to highlight research on major issues such as the transformations of Turkish political Islam, the politicization of the diaspora, new forms of exile, elite migrations, and the intergenerational perpetuation of transnational and gendered practices. A comparative perspective will open a dialogue with the situation of migrations from Turkey in the North and the South (particularly in Africa). Young researchers are particularly encouraged to present their current theses and the most recent research works. The conference will also aim to establish a dialogue between the academic world and literary and artistic expressions related to migrations from Turkey.

Music, Diplomacy, Propaganda: Towards New Definitions

What is music diplomacy, what is music propaganda, and what makes it possible to distinguish one from the other – not only from the internal perspective of players involved, but also and primarily from research’s external perspective? Organized as part of an interdisciplinary research project aimed at (re)thinking the distinction between music diplomacy and music propaganda, the purpose of this 2-part participatory workshop is to offer a space for group reflection on these fundamental questions.

Conservation-restoration of embroidered textiles from the Renaissane to the 19th century

    Technè, n°60, 2025-2

The study of embroidered textiles presents several points of interest: research may focus on the embroidery itself (materials, techniques, patterns), its supporting medium (nature, composition of materials, type of weaving), as well as the relationships between these two fields. We aim to identify topics of discussion by juxtaposing ancient texts with materials analysis; to present examples of the conservation of embroidered textiles with an emphasis on the choice of technical protocols; and to consider the difficult problem of exhibiting these rare and precious textiles.

Screens in works of art: imagination and reflexivity

It is well-known that the representation of the window played a key role in the history of painting. By delimiting the object to be viewed, the window assigns a place to the subject contemplating the landscape, keeping it apart. The contemporary era is leading to representations of the new screens that still need to be analysed globally. In addition to the monographic approaches that already exist, our approach aims to examine the representations of screens in all contemporary media, without any hierarchical distinction.

    Vogue's view on Education

Diachronic and transnational perspectives on vogue magazine, from the archives to the Classroom

A Tribute to Georges Delerue (1925-1992)

2025 will mark the 100th anniversary of Georges Delerue’s birth. Hosted by the University of Evry, this international conference pays tribute to one of the most prolific composers of French cinema, who won three César awards for his scores to Préparez vos mouchoirs (Bertrand Blier, 1978), L’Amour en fuite (François Truffaut, 1979) and Le Dernier Métro (Truffaut, 1980). Despite the existence of a few biographies, the musician is still little represented in academic literature. The conference aims to reflect on existing research on the composer and to lay new foundations for the study of his work.

Spaces of Confinement: Memories of Repression and Coloniality

Animation in Africa and the Arab world

From Geneses to Present Day: challenges and perspectives

Arab and African animation has come into the spotlight, gaining more visibility in international festivals by virtue of a renewal of interest and curiosity for these societies since the popular uprising of 2011. The primary aim of this conference is to bring attention to film production that is still barely explored in film discursive practices and to expand the existing knowledge base on film and animation. The second objective is to map the theoretical field of African and Arab animation by approaching it as a whole.

Sociolinguistic, Semiotic, and Cultural Forms of Transmission
