Modernism and Rurality: Mapping the State of Research (EAHN 2018 - Tallin)

5th European Architectural History Network International Meeting, in Tallinn, June 2018

This session aims to address, from a historical perspective, the relation between, on one side, architecture and the related disciplines, and on the other side, agriculture and rurality at large. We welcome proposals specifically mapping case studies concerned with large-scale agricultural development and/or colonization schemes conceived and (but not necessarily) implemented in Europe and beyond during modern times (late 18th-20th century), strongly connected to nation- and State-building processes, and to the modernization of the countryside. We are particularly interested in those examples which aimed to “make the difference” in both scale and numbers, entailing radical reshaping of previously uninhabited or sparsely populated areas into new, planned, “total” rural landscapes.

    Urban figures and characters

    How to repopulate urban aesthetics

This issue on “Urban figures and characters, how to repopulate urban aesthetics” aims to recall classical urban images, and to create or introduce into urban studies. Why not dare to propose neologisms, archaisms, characters, figures, reviving images, movements, in order to relaunch the exploration of the urban space? Starting from there, a new perception of the urban experience, and consequently a new definition of urbanity could be proposed, both more pragmatic and poetic.

    Planetary Futures

In the face of the current ecological crisis, how shall we rethink concepts and practices of environment, ecology, difference, and technology to envision and create a more just, sustainable, and diverse planet? The combined histories of colonialism, extraction industries, energy, as well as innovation in design, architecture, literature and technology offer a lens by which to examine how contemporary techno-scientific societies envision planetary futures. Site visits exploring resource extraction, colonialism in urban policy and planning, and speculative architectural design will be accompanied by an analysis of science fiction, science technology, speculative design and ethnography, as well as life and earth sciences.

Urban cosmopolitanisms: Methodological and theoretical issues

This worshop seeks to investigate cosmopolitanism through an urban lens. It aims to provide a situated approach to cosmopolitanism, using the analytical framework of urban and social theory alongside social geography and building upon empirical research. Our purpose is to frame a grounded theory of urban cosmopolitanism that would take the paradigms and empirical findings of various social sciences into account. Our interest lies in a cosmopolitanism of encounters incarnated in contacts, mobilities and cultural consumption and the spatial dimension of the social and power relations that are at stake in cosmopolitan encounters. We shall focus on cities as sites, but also actors in processes of cosmopolitanisation.

Challenges of Cultural Diversity in Europe and the Arab World

The era of globalization arises numerous challenges to accept plurality, differences and management of cultural diversity, especially, with the return of the ingredient of culture to the field of political action in a context in which culture has a central role in the post Cold War world. Globalization has tried to widespread certain values, practices and cultural expressions, whereas in numerous Arab and Western countries, refuge has been sought in cultural singularity and identity. Therefore, cultural factors have had their impact in the design of national, regional and international policies.

    Migrants in Global Metropolises

    MAGMET research and doctoral seminar
