From « Traditional » Games to Digital Games

Since the early 2000’s, the importance of studying digital games has increased to take a significant place in the academic literature dedicated to entertaining phenomena, to such a point that many articles offering to make an inventory of current “game studies” primarily focus on work related to games on this media. In this context, we cannot ignore the fact that work aimed at conceiving and studying digital games is also regularly referred to as reflections on (non-digital) “traditional” games, whether to build their theoretical framework, or to conduct comparative and contrastive studies. According to us, this kind of mutual lighting encourages researchers to examine the peculiarities and complementarities of the two areas, as well as the theoretical interest of connecting or of confronting them. Therefore, in order to analyse the relations established between “traditional” games and digital games, this call is divided into five themes that give a broad overview of the different kinds of possible links. All types of research, fundamental or applied, as well as disciplinary approaches are welcome.

Open Access platforms: models, trends and problematics

L’Associazione Italiana Biblioteche organise le 25 mars à Florence une journée d’études intitulée Les plateformes en Open Access : modèles, tendances, défis. L’Open Access est aujourd’hui un sujet stratégique pour les bibliothèques universitaires. De meilleurs résultats de l’accès ouvert aux publications universitaires sont obtenus quand celles-ci les diffusent sur des plateformes qui les rendent facilement identifiables et accessibles. Les plateformes de dimension européenne et internationale jouent un rôle important dans le développement de l’Open Access quand elle sont relayées par des acteurs provenant de plusieurs pays qui eux mêmes collaborent directement avec les communautés scientifiques qui produisent des publications. Les plateformes en Open Access ont également un rôle à jouer dans le développement d’outils bibliométriques qui facilitent le peer reviewing et optimisent la diffusion des contenus.

Paul Ricoeur: Thinker of the Margins?

Paul Ricoeur est bien connu comme philosophe du dialogue. L’originalité de sa pensée consistait non pas à rechercher l’impossible ou à faire communiquer les extrêmes, mais bien plutôt à rendre possible une médiation dans l’opposition conflictuelle entre les penseurs ou entre les systèmes de pensée. Là où les autres parlent de rupture ou de dichotomie, Ricoeur essaie d’établir un rapport. C’est pourquoi il est possible de qualifier sa pensée de dialectique. Or, cette approche dialectique ne risque-t-elle pas d’aboutir à une harmonisation des points de vue irréductibles ? Cette conférence veut questionner l’approche herméneutique de Ricoeur tout en la confrontant avec ses limites. À cet effet, elle veut engager le point de vue de Ricoeur sur des questions philosophiques, sociopolitiques et religieuses de première importance à l’heure actuelle dans un échange avec d’autres penseurs plus « radicaux ».

The texts can be presented in the languages: Spanish, English, Portuguese and French. The Congress results will be published in 3 books of paper each one by his own ISBN, one in USA (in English), other one in Portugal (in Portuguese) and other one in Spain (in Spanish or French, as it is the language of the original contribution). Fourth Annual Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies

The Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies – a collaboration between the Bauhaus- Universität Weimar (Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie, IKKM) and Princeton University (German Department) – returns to Princeton in 2014 for its fourth installment. The 2014 topic will be “Practices, Procedures, Recursions: The Reality of Media?”. The weeklong program will be hosted by Princeton’s German Department. It will be directed by Bernhard Siegert (Weimar) and Nikolaus Wegmann (Princeton). Besides the directors the faculty will include renowned film maker Harun Farocki as well as scholars of media and literature such as Petra McGillen (Dartmouth), Grant Wythoff (Columbia), and Harun Maye (Weimar).

Colonial geopolitics and local cultures in the Hellenistic and Roman East (IIIrd Century B.C. – IIIrd Century A.D.)

Géopolitique coloniale et cultures locales dans l'Orient hellénistique et romain (IIIe siècle av. J.-C. – IIIe siècle ap. J.-C.)

It seems clear that, in the Greek-speaking regions of the Roman Empire, Hellenistic models (civic, military or institutional) exercised considerable influence over “Italic” colonial projects. Within this field, relations between military colonists and indigenous peoples demand special attention, considering the degree of social, cultural, economic, political and geopolitical transformation brought about by the installation of certain groups upon those lands as a result of the will of the great power(s) that ruled over them. As for the Roman colonization, modern scholars have often described Roman colonies as vectors of Romanization inserted in alien lands, writing that these communities must have functioned as images of a “small Rome.” While the existence of Latin-speaking colonists ruled by a favorable juridical system such as the Ius Italicum cannot be denied, such a reductionist model can no longer be accepted without qualification, especially in the context of the Greek-speaking provinces of the Roman East. The regions of the Eastern Mediterranean world saw the coming of a number of groups of Roman colonists and thus their cultural climate, their agrarian structures and their geopolitical environment changed. The aim of this panel is to explore new research paths based on broader studies in time and space.

When cities meet forests

Environmental approaches of interactions between cities and forest supplies during the Middles Ages and the Early modern period. 12th International Conference on urban History, European Association for Urban History – Main Session M16

As places of consumption and production European medieval and early modern cities exerted a enormous pressure on neighbouring woodlands. Some historical studies have already discussed the way cities tried to impone their control on these lands emphasizing the diversity of needs which were fulfilled by forest exploitation (wood, timber, charcoal, grazing…). They often concluded that urban pressure resulted in an inexorable degradation of the forest cover. Indeed local woodlands and forests products could probably never meet the demand. In order to face shortage or, better, to prevent it, urban authorities attempted on one hand to extend their control on more and more distant forests and to attract interregional or « international » trade flows. On the other hand, they tried to regulate the local market so as to ensure access to several important needs regarding urban economy (charcoal, timber).

Le cartulaire dit Becerro Galicano du monastère de San Millán de la Cogolla est une source fondamentale pour l’histoire sociale, linguistique, politique et culturelle de l’Espagne chrétienne des IX^e-XII^e siècles. À l’occasion de la mise en ligne de l’édition électronique du Becerro Galicano, une rencontre internationale d’historiens et de philologues aura lieu à San Millán. La discussion aura pour objet les changements subis par certains aspects essentiels de la production du savoir historique. Le colloque prêtera bien entendu une attention particulière au renouveau des études sur les cartulaires, mais il veut aussi proposer un ensemble de réflexions plus générales sur les sources et sur leur emploi dans la construction de l’histoire et de la philologie. L’organisation du colloque propose des bourses de séjour aux étudiants et aux jeunes chercheurs.

Reading historical sources in the digital age

After the inaugural DHLU Symposium in 2009 that focused on "Contemporary history in the digital age" and a second edition which tackled the methodological and theoretical implications of considering websites as primary sources (March 2012), this third edition will focus on the use of online thematic research corpora. Given that more and more sources for contemporary history are being made available online as digital research corpora — as on the CVCE’s site — and following on from the first two editions which examined the methods used to develop these sources, this third edition of Digital Humanities Luxembourg will focus on the various ways in which this material is used by humanities researchers, particularly contemporary historians and more specifically specialists in European integration.

This 7th edition of the U&U International PhD Seminar will be held at the ENSA Paris-Malaquais, under the scientific direction of the Laboratory of Infrastructure and Architecture Planning (LIAT). “Rural Archaeology and Rural History – Middle Ages – Modern era” The theme chosen for this 2013 edition of the Rural History Summer School will allow us to consider the relationship between rural archeology and history. More than the oppositions, it seems it is the relationships, the combinations and the intertwining of disciplines, that need to be questioned through the different scientific traditions in Europe (England, Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy). This European overview will be the major focus of this 2013 summer school. The emphasis will also be put on the recent development of post-medieval archaeology, practiced in England and Italy for example, but still embryonic in several European countries. The interrogations will dwell on rescue and commercial Archeology and on its methods and results.

Forms and possibilities of communication in the Middle Ages

Une définition appropriée à ce que l’on entend par « La communication au Moyen Âge » n’existe pas. Derrière le concept général de « communication » se cache une multitude de significations et d’expressions différentes. La théorie et la pratique ont la particularité de se présenter sous de multiples formes : c’est pourquoi les définitions simplifiées s’éliminent d’elles-mêmes. Pourtant, au cours de ces dernières décennies, la recherche médiévistique sur la communication a traité d’un grand nombre d’aspects, permettant des nouvelles approches avec ce problème complexe. Au cours de l’Université d’été, ces différents points d’interprétation et d’explication devront être discutés.
