Urban Metamorphoses: Socio-Spatial Dynamics in Arab Cities

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Arab world has undergone rapid urbanization. Today, global cities in the region such as Doha and Dubai have themselves become exporters of new urban paradigms to the wider Arab world and beyond. This issue of EchoGéo aims to explore these urban metamorphoses through a multidisciplinary and comparative approach, connecting dynamics across North Africa and the Middle East, and to bridge three elements: understanding the forces that deeply transform Arab cities, examining how they unfold in concrete places, and giving full attention to the resistances, detours, and inventions that redraw urban life.

In a now-celebrated text, Denis Richet analyzed how the monarchy shaped itself. In its second year, this webinar invites participants to build on his analysis by shifting the focus to the institutional, individual, and collective actors who, in their daily exercise of sovereignty, worked to shape their own offices, challenge the orders they received, and invent an ancient origin for their practices. These practices were often recently established as a result of political manoeuvres, disgrace, or dynastic change.

The New History of the Age of Gunpowder in Asia
The aim of this issue of Bellica is to bring together articles exploring the new history of the “age of gunpowder” in Asia from the 10th century to the present. By studying the origins, evolution, uses, and consequences of firearms in Asia over the last millennium, this collection of articles aims to highlight the recent opening-up of military history to the non-Western world, without denying the West’s importance.

Musique urbaine née au début des années 1990 dans les cités universitaires d’Abidjan, le zouglou s’est imposé comme une forme d’expression artistique populaire et engagée, portée par une jeunesse ivoirienne en quête de reconnaissance, de justice et de dignité. Ce colloque international entend interroger le zouglou dans sa richesse multidimensionnelle : musicale, linguistique, politique, esthétique, sociologique et historique. Il s’inscrit dans une perspective interdisciplinaire et transversale, en croisant les apports des sciences humaines et sociales, de la musicologie, de la littérature, des arts du spectacle, de l’anthropologie, des études culturelles et politiques.

Over the past thirty years, most European countries have adopted legislation designed to regulate political activities and the boundaries of professional politics. These laws have been introduced in response to societal demands, a lack of trust in representatives and institutions, and ’political crises’ and ’scandals’ involving elected officials. These laws and instruments contribute to the formation and governance of a group of political professionals. For example, instruments have been developed to support the ethical transformation of political spaces and the definition of good practices.

Religion in Societies: Multidisciplinary Approaches
The LLSETI (Laboratoire langages, littératures, sociétés, études transfrontalières et internationales) laboratory organizes its biennial study day dedicated to doctoral students, focusing in 2026 on “Societies and Religion.” This interdisciplinary event aims to combine approaches from literature, history, linguistics, philosophy, and social sciences to explore the multiple relationships between religion and society. Religion is considered in its diversity — institutions, beliefs, rituals, identities, relations to power, and secular forms — while also taking into account contemporary critiques of the concept itself. Proposals may address interactions between faith, society, culture, and politics, the construction of religious identities, or the ethical and moral dynamics arising from religious practice.

How to teach gender in medicine and health?
Methodological issues and the challenge of interdisciplinarity
In the second half of the 20th century, the introduction of the concept of gender into the social sciences and humanities and into medical sciences restored complexity to the concept of sex, while producing ambivalent effects, notably thecreation of a sex/gender dyad and a divide between the biological and the social. The epistemological heterogeneity of concepts makes dialogue between health careprofessionals and between scientific disciplines difficult, reinforcing newstereotypes in research, clinical practice, and teaching. Interdisciplinary dialogue is necessary in order to teach healthcare professionals about gender and social inequalities in health. How can teaching practices be harmonized without establishing a truth regime about gender?

An ecological transition under strain: country, landscape, and uses in contemporary Germany
The starting point for this conference is the observation that the ecological transition in Germany, which one might have thought would be easier or at least more harmonious than in other countries due to the importance that environmental issues have had in German culture, society, and politics from very early on, is in fact encountering numerous obstacles and is even being called into question. This is evidenced, among other things, by the setbacks which the energy transition encounters and by the success of the party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) despite—or perhaps because of—its stance in favour of climate change denial.

This thematic issue of Diasporas. Circulations, Migrations, Histoire. journal invites contributions examining how the material factors shaped the construction of identities, solidarities, and social hierarchies among displaced populations from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. By adopting an approach that encompasses migrants, refugees, and exiles, the issue seeks to explore the role of living conditions, work, housing and consumer practices in decisions regarding departure, settlement, and anchoring, as well as in processes of social mobility and demotion. Studying the history of displaced people through their material lives opens a dialogue on the role of economic factors not only in the categorizations imposed by authorities but also in the processes of self-identification and belonging developed by the displaced themselves.

Discussions will revolve around three main themes: the institutional and epistemological stakes of digitizing scholarly heritage, the practices and tools employed in ongoing projects, and the conditions for the valorization and reuse of digitized resources.

Rituality and Economy: The Material Thickness of Rituals
In the social sciences, the study of rituals has long been the prerogative of sociology and anthropology of religions, which have studied their role in the production of meaning and in relation to the notion of symbolic efficacy. The field of “ritual studies” has broadened this area of research by focusing on secular or religious, initiatory or syncretic rituals. The economic dimension of rituals has been a central subject of analysis since the beginnings of social and cultural anthropology. Economic anthropology, combined with ritual studies, offers us a promising framework for deepening these questions. We wish to go beyond the classical opposition between the economic and the symbolic to focus on objects, bodies, and places and their ritual as well as economic involvement.
