Two postdoctoral researchers will be recruited from January 1, 2026 for two years at CEFRES. They will be both affiliated to CEFRES and to a relevant department for their research at Charles University (UK).

California as the Epicenter of Social Sciences

California occupies a central position in American studies and has inspired countless papers and books from its admission to statehood up to the present. This international symposium aims to gather and unify the various strands of social science research—including American studies, sociology, social anthropology, history, political science, and geography—whose methodologies (archival work, oral history, ethnography, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, etc.) allow for an intersectional examination of territorial, social, and racial inequalities and policies in California. It will offer a forum for field insights into the challenges and difficulties faced by France-based scholars in applying these methodologies to distant research fields.

Since the 2^nd edition, the Academic days expressly refer to “digital issues” in the title of the international conference, as digitalization is a major issue for open governments in the information society. Thus, speakers can deliver speeches focused on open government issues, on digital issues or concerning both open government and digital issues.

This special issue of Cahiers d’Études africaines seeks to examine academic writing and publishing within the scientific editorial system of African studies, both today and in the past. Reflexive and critical, but without being strictly introspective, since it is not solely concerned with the case of Cahiers, this special issue encourages future contributors to take scientific publishing in African studies as a subject and a field of investigation, focusing on three entry points: texts, individuals, and journals. 2026 Call for Researchers by the Bnu : Abraham Moles Collection

In 2013, as part of a donation, the Abraham Moles library was incorporated into the BNU collections. With around 7,000 volumes, this collection reflects the diverse interests of a researcher trained in both the exact sciences and the human sciences. Its books, files, records and objects illustrate Moles’ intellectual and professional journey, from his early work as an engineer specialising in electroacoustics to his research in social psychology, and from his collaboration with the RTF Radio and Television Studies Centre to his work on the subject of kitsch. Its breadth also includes Moles’ areas of special expertise as a pioneer of the information and communication sciences in France, including computing and urban planning, posters and design, semiology and “futurism.” The topic to be pursued during the researcher’s stay must be directly related to the Abraham Moles collection at the National and University Library.

Anthropologie linguistique, concepts du terrain, concepts du champ

Linguistic anthropology originated via a focus on language use. Now language has two key features: It is only ever encountered in use, that is, processually. And it is forever the medium of its own explication, that is, it is reflexive. To grapple with language, one accordingly needs concepts that possess these features. As is well known, linguistic anthropology arrived at such concepts through its grounding in Peircean semiotics. Another basis for the sub-discipline’s concepts has been the Boasian comparativist tradition of language study. Continuing its exploration of the latter, this conference proposes a focus on the concept of calibration, first taken up by Benjamin Lee Whorf.
