The "new clothes" of authoritarianism in the Middle East

    Confluences Méditerranée Journal

Authoritarianism in the Middle East has undergone a series of mutations, in various forms, without in many cases fundamentally shaking its traditional patrimonial, military and rentier structures. The "Arab Springs" of 2011 revealed the flaws in these systems. However, recent developments have also illustrated how the notion of political change can actually amount to a veneer of continuity. Many of these regimes have adapted to popular protest and overcome it by adopting a range of measures - from liberalisation to cooperation, from modernisation to coercion. With this in mind, this issue of Confluences Méditerranée will look at this complex issue through a series of interdisciplinary contributions based on existing literature and grounded in field studies.

Orality in All Its Forms Across the World's Languages

    Linguistic, Literary, and Sociocultural Challenges

This international conference (November 20-22, 2025, University of Sousse) delves into the multifaceted nature of orality, exploring its linguistic, literary, and sociocultural significance across global languages. Central themes include: the structural dynamics of oral language (prosody, gestures, and real-time syntax), methodological challenges in transcribing and annotating oral corpora, and the sociolinguistic hierarchies between spoken and written forms. The conference also investigates how digital technologies are reshaping orality through hybrid communication tools like voice interfaces and AI-driven transcription.

Tele-Phonies: Listening at a Distance in the Arts and Auditory Cultures

Building on the hypothesis of an interconnection between auditory cultures, perception regimes, and listening techniques, the Tele-Phonies study day proposes an analysis of the regimes of perception and cultures of listening linked to the multifaceted notion of distance. By taking into account not only telephone communication networks and mass radio media but, more broadly, acknowledging listening as a set of practices and media techniques of listening at a distance within or on the margins of these networks, we will try to understand their profound impact on sound arts and auditory cultures.

Complotisme et théories du complot, nouveaux objets, nouveaux enjeux

Conspiracism and conspiracy theories, new objects, new issues

While conspiracism and conspiracy theories — along with the risks they entail — have become widespread in everyday discourse, they have only recently emerged as subjects of philosophical inquiry. What can philosophy bring to bear on these new objects of inquiry? How can we precisely define what is meant by conspiracism and conspiracy theory? How should we assess, justify, or question the critiques commonly leveled against them? What tools can philosophy offer in addressing conspiratorial discourse? This study day aims to engage with these questions, and is proud to welcome — for the first time in a French-speaking context — several authors who have pioneered the philosophical examination of these issues.

    CFP : Science-Friction

    23-24 octobre 2025

Maintaining public goods in an era of austerity

Espaces et Société n°200, march 2027

This special issue aims to highlight the spatial dimension of public goods maintenance and evolution in the context of austerity by adopting the spatial care perspective through three axes: 1) actors and practices involved in maintaining public goods; 2) maintaining public goods on a day-to-day basis; 3) the work and values of public goods. We encourage ethnographic and situated perspectives that consider top-down political experimentation, bottom-up urban practices and their convergence in the protection, maintenance and regeneration of public goods. This call is open to interdisciplinary, national and international contributions.

The Naturalist’s Wonder: Exploring Nature’s Marvels and Oddities

    Zoomathia Conference 2025

Nature is often aberrant, or at least so disconcerting that it would be a form of ignorance not to marvel at it. The nature of animals, like that of plants, « overflows on all sides »(Theophrastus). This call for papers is addressed to all those—historians of science, historians of texts, biologists—who are interested in what Aristotle described as « the non-ordinary order of nature, » in its most disconcerting manifestations. Presentations may focus on motifs of natural strangeness, whether in experience or history, addressing anatomical, physiological, or behavioral aspects, as well as fields such as communication, technical skills, or what is vaguely referred to as the « animal sixth sense. »
