Travel to, in, and from the Ottoman World and Turkish Republic
Turkish Journal of History (Tarih Dergisi)
For this special issue of Tarih Dergisi, the Turkish Journal of History, we invite original research addressing questions arising from travel to, in, and from the Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic. Essays may focus on the place of travel writing in historiography. They may also address any and all aspects of travel. We particularly welcome studies of travel works in any format – books, manuscripts, letters, diaries, journals, reports, log-books, cartography, web-blogs – by Ottoman, Turkish, Arab, Asiatic and African travellers of any period. Essays need not, however, be restricted to conventional travelogues by individual travellers. We welcome studies concerned with modes of travel (pedestrianism, equestrian travel, trains, cars, planes, boats), and with questions involving mass travel (migrancy, nomadism, deportation).

Congist'19 - International Congress of Social Sciences

XIIth European Days of Galatasaray
Since 2002, the European Days of Galatasaray constitute an annual opportunity to bring together researchers interested in interdisciplinary topics related to Europe. The theme of the 12th European Days, is entitled: “Crossed Perspectives on European Borders: Mobility, security and borders”.The goal of the conference is to tackle issues such as borders, new forms of mobility, migration policies and securitization in a changing context strongly marked by the financial and economic crisis in the region.

The making of cultural policies
Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization
This workshop takes place in the framework of the research project “Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization”. It aims to analyse the making of cultural policies and actions in Turkey and the post-ottoman spaces. We wish to question the ways in which the circulations participate in the construction of cultural policies today as well as to rethink the earlier cultural policies and actions from the late Ottoman Empire onwards. The workshop attempts to question the co-production of cultural policies, of their spaces and territories, as well as the plurality of the conceptions of culture carried by cultural policies. The workshop will focus on the phenomena of hybridity, of connections, and associations of various actors which co-produce original forms of cultural policies.

Inter-Asian Connections (2013)
To be held in Istanbul and hosted by Koç University, the conference will host seven concurrent workshops led by two or three directors and showcasing innovative research from across the social sciences and related disciplines. Workshops will focus on themes of particular relevance to Asia, reconceptualized as a dynamic and interconnected historical, geographical, and cultural formation stretching from the Middle East through Eurasia and South Asia, to East Asia. The conference structure and schedule have been designed to enable intensive "working group" interactions on a specific research theme, as well as broader interactions on topics of mutual interest and concern. Accordingly, there will be a public keynote and plenary sessions in addition to closed workshop sessions.

New Patterns, Realities and Pitfalls
The workshop will analyse the interaction and the interpenetration of nationality, ethnicity and identity through the problematic of transnationalism, globalization and nation-state perspectives. The workshop will be supplemented by practical visits to local communities. Participants are invited to consider the theoretical debates and issues in differing local areas with a variety of social practitioners and representatives to gain further insights of demographic, economic, philosophic, legal and socio-anthropological approaches. -

Catégories langagières énonciatives d’un espace méditerranéen
Catégories langagières énonciatives d’un espace méditerranéen : de « l’homo oeconomicus » à « l’homo reciprocus ». Nous allons nous demander si quelques mouvements émergents -les minorités par ex.- ne mobilisent pas des « ressources » différentes de celles dont on se sert habituellement, comme « classes sociales », « mouvements sociaux » etc. Il s’agirait des catégories langagières de la « reconnaissance » (et non plus seulement de « l’action sur l’autre », homme ou nature), de l’inter-dépendance (et non plus seulement de l’indépendance) etc. Ces critères, énonçant non plus un « homo economicus » mais un « homo reciprocus », ne seraient-ils pas propres d’une « autre modernité », à l’œuvre dans la culture commune aux deux rives de la Méditerranée ? -

Mémoire et patrimoine à l'ère de la globalisation

Dans le cadre du XVIIIe congrès international de l'AISLF, « Être en société. Le lien social à l'épreuve des cultures », le GT 14 « Institutions du patrimoine » propose de s'interroger sur les mutations des pratiques patrimoniales et mémorielles à l'ère de la globalisation et dans la mesure où ce phénomène marque l'affaiblissement de la référence territoriale. Il s'agira de montrer, via des descriptions fines de situations, de quelles actions sur le passé se nourrissent les cultures de ou dans la déterritorialisation – et pour quelles visées politiques. -

Le français, « langue des élites » dans le bassin méditerranéen (XVIIIe siècle – milieu XXe siècle)
La question centrale de ce colloque porte sur les rapports entre la langue française et les « élites » (commerçantes, politiques, scientifiques, militaires, diplomatiques, religieuses, artistiques ou autres) dans l’aire méditerranéenne sur une période de 250 ans (début XVIIIe siècle – milieu du XXe siècle). En quoi ces « élites » ont-elles contribué à la diffusion et aux usages de la langue française et, par effet de retour, dans quelle mesure la langue française a-t-elle pu servir à certains groupes pour se « définir » comme élites ? -
