Archives, history, and memory from the Age of Revolution until the First World War

The long nineteenth century witnessed four major historical processes of the utmost significance: the modernisation of the state, nation-state building, the independence of the American colonies from Europe, and the colonisation of the African and Asian continents. The modernising of the state entailed its growth and bearing on the economy and society, the widening of the state’s role, the “bureaucratization” of its administrative apparatus, and protracted democratisation. Along came the reduction or removal of competing powers, namely the church and aristocracy. The state also became a vehicle for the enshrinement of private property, free enterprise and, increasingly, the freedom of association among citizens. In addition, the modernised state would favour and support nation-state building in a number of ways.

Les organisateurs de cette conférence invitent la communauté scientifique à présenter des travaux de recherche et à débattre sur le rôle de la science, de la technologie et du patrimoine dans le monde maritime dans des contextes de « déglobalisation » / globalisation du XX^e siècle. Il s’agira de comprendre la fonction des principaux espaces et des acteurs, et d’analyser les politiques publiques nationales et internationales à différentes échelles (du local à l’international), dans un contexte de guerres, de crises, de croissance économique et de colonisation/décolonisation.

Old Tensions, emerging paradoxes in health

European Society for Health and Medical Sociology 17th biennial conference

The positive effect of comprehensive health systems on health outcomes, economic growth and well-being is generally acknowledged, just as of representative policies, scientific-based decisions and trust relationships on social cohesion and respect for political and civil rights in health. Not surprisingly, health policies have become more aligned with the needs of different social groups (e.g. migrants, ethnic minorities, women, LGBT) and of specific medical conditions (e.g. HIV, mental and age-related diseases). Regulators interfere more and more in professional work models and decisions to better control health systems performance and to enhance transparency, but so do empowered citizens in the defence of their rights as patients.

Sensibilités esclaves dans les mondes ibériques (XV-XXe siècle)

Les récits de vies d'esclaves semblent beaucoup moins courants dans les mondes ibériques que, par exemple, anglo-américains. Ils sont pourtant une source de première importance pour comprendre les subjectivités des esclaves eux-mêmes. D'autres sources (archives de l'Inquisition, actes notariés, actes de manumission, etc.) peuvent parfois permettre de traquer cette voix des sans-voix. Ce colloque, organisé en commun par l'Instituto de ciências sociais (Lisbonne) et la Casa de Velázquez / École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques (Madrid), voudrait permettre d'avancer dans l'étude de la vision des asservis, dans le cadre ibérique.

Vingt-cinq ans de recherche internationale en toxicomanies

Regards croisés sur cinq sujets-clés

L'objectif de cette conférence internationale est double : il s'agit tout d'abord de célébrer et reconstituer ces vingt-cinq années de travail et d'engagement dans ce domaine. D'autre part, il s’agit d'ouvrir un débat et de diffuser les résultats scientifiques du dernier projet de recherche : « Analyse des politiques et pratiques dans le domaine de l'utilisation et l'abus des drogues. L'Université Catholique en dialogue avec les acteurs politiques et sociaux », coordonné par le Centre pendant trois années.

Our goals for the conference are to raise awareness of the artistic exchange and mutual influences between the Han Chinese arts and the arts from different cultural backgrounds in China itself, as well as beyond its geographical and cultural boundaries. We also aim to go through the issues on the construction of artistic identity and the balance between permeability and hegemony, tradition and innovation, convenience and misinterpretation.

O Portugal atlântico, europeu e lusófono: uma nação de portas abertas

A presença dos Portugueses no mundo não é mais do que um reflexo de uma certa curiosidade tipicamente portuguesa, misturada com um empreendedorismo aventureiro, uma vontade inata de procurar descobrir onde nos leva o caminho. E, historicamente, o caminho levou-nos para todos os cantos do globo, desde o Oceano Atlântico e Mar Mediterrâneo ao Oceano Índico, do Mar do Sul da China até ao Oceano Pacífico. Estas extensas viagens deram a oportunidade aos Portugueses de interagirem com culturas muito diferente. Mas deram-lhe também uma capacidade incomum para abrir as suas portas a outras culturas, outras formas de viver, de fazer negócios, de comunicar e de construir pontes e caminhos.

The panel will explore spatial configurations created in these contexts, questioning the forms of modernity expressed by architectural and urban projects. With the purpose of challenging a general assumption according to which Asian and especially Southeast Asian urban landscapes affected by recent developments tend toward irremediable standardization and “Westernization”, the panel will explore local expressions of modernity through the examination of projects pointing to a reinterpretation of forms of local heritages.

Transforming South-East Asian Cities: a View from the Grassroots

7th EuroSEAS Conference – 7th groupe "Environment, cities and housing", panel 72

Based on empirical approaches, the aim of this panel is to analyze contemporary urban dynamics at the local scale in Southeast Asian cities. In particular we will address mechanisms of urban change, as they can be seen at the neighborhood level. With the ongoing transformations, both in city centers and in the peripheries, are there new forms of urban practices, of resistance? What is the role of the people at the grassroots in such transformations? These interactions can be read from such scales as the home, the street and the neighborhood. From this viewpoint, how can we consider urban oppositional processes, for instance a formal sector to an informal one, public actors to private ones, the authorities to citizens?

For the last decades, the ECSAS has been an important platform for debate and illustration of contemporary trends in South Asian studies worldwide. The ECSAS conferences are held biennially under the auspices of the European Association for South Asian Studies (EASAS), a professional, non-profit organization of scholars engaged in research and teaching concerning South Asia with regard to all periods and fields of study. Scholars and students from any field of research related to the South Asian region are invited to participate in the 22nd European Conference on South Asian Studies (ECSAS) in Lisbon.
