    Looking at Music. Comparative perspectives

The seminar series "Looking at Music. Comparative perspectives", organized by the Centre for Comparative Studies (CEC-FLUL), intends to constitute a space for debate and interdisciplinary reflection on music in its different aspects and in a comparative perspective. Studies about music have grown in the last decades and today are part of several departments and scientific fields. The plurality of looks on music and the analysis of its performative and discursive practices, introduced new analytical tools and distinct forms of interpretation. Intermediate studies, on the other hand, invite us to approach music in relation to other media and artistic forms, from visual arts to poetry. The cycle of seminars "Looking at Music. Comparative perspectives" proposes to examine various ways of interpreting music.

History and polemics: historiographical debates and the public space

Ever since history became an academic knowledge, historiographical debates have been exceptional moments of construction, condensation and dissensus, often resulting in historiographical turns. Controversies around specific themes have divided entire fields of knowledge production, bringing into light different, often contrasting conceptions, methodologies and practices of historical knowledge. Such debates were, at the same time, moments in which the description and interpretation of the past represented a public intervention in the present, in which the defense of a certain way of making sense of history was also a way of taking of sides in a specific contemporary political discussion. Historiographical polemics were therefore moments in which historiographical knowledge had to confront in the public space other approaches to the past, thus making visible, and challenging, the paradigms that rule the historical discipline and public history.

Archives, history, and memory from the Age of Revolution until the First World War

The long nineteenth century witnessed four major historical processes of the utmost significance: the modernisation of the state, nation-state building, the independence of the American colonies from Europe, and the colonisation of the African and Asian continents. The modernising of the state entailed its growth and bearing on the economy and society, the widening of the state’s role, the “bureaucratization” of its administrative apparatus, and protracted democratisation. Along came the reduction or removal of competing powers, namely the church and aristocracy. The state also became a vehicle for the enshrinement of private property, free enterprise and, increasingly, the freedom of association among citizens. In addition, the modernised state would favour and support nation-state building in a number of ways.
