  Languages and Translation : Cognitive Challenges

  La Faculté de langues et de traduction de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth et ses institutions rattachées (l’École de traducteurs et d’interprètes de Beyrouth -ETIB, le Centre des langues vivantes - CLV et le Centre de recherches et d’études arabes - CREA)-  organisent un colloque international intitulé « Langues et traduction : Enjeux cognitifs » à Beyrouth (Liban). Ce colloque a pour but de réunir des équipes de recherche intéressées par les problématiques qui portent sur les liens existant entre les processus cognitifs et l’enseignement/ apprentissage des langues et de la traduction/interprétation.

  Spatiality in Japan

  Japarchi research network seminars, 2019-2020

  Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi se poursuit en 2019. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Les interventions prennent appui et se concentrent sur un terme ou une expression. Cette année les entrées thématiques proposées portaient sur : 1) la notion de paysage au Japon, 2) des termes désignant des lieux, moments, rituels associés à l’hospitalité et à sa spatialisation (architecture, ville, milieu rural, paysage, jardin), dans l’histoire et aujourd’hui, 3) la notion d’espaces publics au Japon et de l’ensemble des termes et expressions usuels propres à qualifier ces espaces et définir leurs usages, 4) la ville et l’architecture soutenables, 5) les mobilités urbaines 6) la rétraction urbaine 7) les effets du tourisme dans les espaces.

  The collapse of empires in the XXth century: new States and new identities

  Le passé revisité à travers le prisme de la relecture des histoires nationales et de la construction de nouvelles identités

  Le XX^e siècle a été marqué par l’intensification du processus de changements politiques. Les révolutions, les deux guerres mondiales, la décolonisation, la fin de la guerre froide, la chute de l’Union soviétique et la disparition du bloc socialiste ont réorganisé l’équilibre des forces dans le monde donnant naissance à plusieurs nouveaux États. Il s’agit de s’interroger sur quels fondements culturels et politiques les nouveaux États ont été reconstruits et comment ils ont tenté de construire de nouveaux États-nations. Ce processus est inéluctablement lié à une nouvelle interprétation du passé souvent, pour ne pas dire toujours, axée sur l’ethnocentrisme à degrés variables. Dans le processus de création de nouvelles histoires nationales, il est pertinent de prendre en considération l’appropriation des mouvements nationalistes prise par les pouvoirs officiels soucieux de rallier et de plaire aux populations sensibles aux idées d’extrême droite. Comment évoluent les rapports avec le passé impérial / colonial ? Se manifestent-ils souvent à travers la formule : « histoires nationales versus histoires impériales » ?

  Transformations: translation and languages

  The theme for the next issue of Al-Kīmīya, the Journal of the Faculté de Langues et de traduction of the Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth, is: “Transformation: Translation and languages”. The concept of transformation is present in several disciplines in human and social sciences as well as in the exact sciences. In terms of languages, transformation can be seen as a reflection of the dynamic nature of languages ​​and their users. Languages ​​are being transformed but are also able to transform the speaking subjects. In translation, the nature of  the changes that the source text undergoes, is at the heart of thinking. The concepts of subjectivity, creativity, loss and equivalence have not lost their relevance and could be questioned. Is the meaning transformed in translation or is it revealed?

In Iraq, the Church of the East was no longer limited by the Sassanian Empire ruled by the Zoroastrians and gained new opportunities to expand. Nevertheless, it is difficult to restitute the reality of this ancient Christianity and to assess the modifications resulting from the conquests.

  Data sharing between Lebanon, Jordan and Syria

  Les chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales qui ont choisi le Proche-Orient comme terrain d'investigation scientifique depuis le XIX^e siècle ont constitué des fonds documentaires comprenant tous les types de sources. Chercheur·e·s libanais·es, syrien·nne·s ? Jordannien·ne·s et Français·es ont produit et mobilisé des corpus de notes et carnets de terrain ou de fouilles, photographies, films et enregistrements sonores, sites web... Ces ensembles constituent des collections qui sont susceptibles d'éclairer l'histoire de la région et d'aider à la compréhension du temps présent. Ces collections restent pourtant souvent difficilement accessibles, parfois même inconnues du monde académique et culturel et bien plus encore des différents publics concernés.

  Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas

  Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom

  Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content and narrative forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This conference aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.
