While historians should take into account the movements in space that constantly transform sciences, they should not lose sight of the specific locations dedicated to the daily work of scientists. In scientific facilities (museums, laboratories, hospitals, etc.), modern scientists use their research instruments, meet with members of their networks, teach, and interact with various actors from outside of their scientific community. Participants in this symposium will seek how to write the history of this dynamic between circulation and institutions of science.

Social Rights and Democracy

We are especially interested in manuscripts on social rights and democracy. Our intent is to prepare a set of discussions on how democracies promote social rights today, i.e., to what extent social movements, legal institutions, parliaments and executive power are able to find solutions to the challenges of democracies today? Have, for example, affirmative action, housing and health care programs, and even direct financial assistance to the poor actually reduced inequality? In addition, what are the most effective solutions for poverty? Are courts the best way to ensure social rights today? We are also interested in papers that address the costs of social programs. These are some of the possibilities, but many other questions may be brought to the table. We encourage submissions based on historical approaches carried out by jurists, political scientists, historians, sociologists, and other professionals in fields that have particular focus on legal problems.

The international symposium on work in agriculture 2016

Transformations of farming systems are marked by increasingly important challenges regarding the environment, food safety and competitiveness of enterprises. How do these transformations bring farming work into question? But farming work has also kept a very strong social and territorial dimension: it gives a place and a status to everyone; it nurtures, safeguards and stabilizes a rural population, and strengthens solidarities largely founded on a local cultural relationship with nature and on agriculture and livestock management. The economic, social and environmental functions of farming work coexist. In rural territories, they may sometimes be complementary, but they can also be quite strained.

Le projet a été conçu à partir de quatre européens qui ont fortement influencé la pensée occidentale au cours du XX^e siècle. Leurs œuvres sont une référence quand il s’agit de questions impliquant la transdisciplinarité, et, en même temps, d’une perspective non-eurocentrique. Malgré la spécifité de chacun de ces discours, on peut les rassembler autour tant de la problématique du privilège du temps présent que de la production de subjectivité. La répercussion de leurs travaux au Brésil et en Amérique Latine n’a jamais cessé de jeter des lumières sur les enjeux concernant l’ethos de ces pays et ses lectures possibles.

O desafio que lançamos com este colóquio internacional é de fazer incidir sobre nós mesmos, aquela curiosidade apaixonada ou aquela atenção maiêutica que temos por hábito praticar na nossa pesquisa e no nosso ensino. Mas este exercício narcísico do olhar não nos desviará do rumo, já que nós só nos conseguimos ver, de fato, por meio dos nossos resultados.

Intermediate Groups in the Portuguese Dominions, 16th-18th century

Revista de História (Universidade de São Paulo)

The Revista de História of the University of São Paulo (Brazil) invites interested scholars to submit proposals for articles to be published as part of a ‘dossier’ concerning intermediate groups in the Portuguese dominions on the Early Modern Age. Throughout that period, ‘middle people’ strove to assert themselves in rural areas and helped to shape old and new urban centers in the Portuguese World, corresponding to an increased demand for specialized services and ensuring the necessary extensions of royal representation functions and Church activities. Even though almost non-existent in juridical or normative terms, those groups were recognized both by nationals and foreigners as a complex and vibrant intermediate social layer. Time has come to try and distinguish its specificities, trends of formation and effective roles in social dynamics.

The Ruins of the Heritagization

The aim of ‘Ruins of the Heritagization’ is to institute an archeology of territories considered as being ‘heritage’ focusing the "ruins" produced by the process of labelling cities. ‘Ruins of the Heritagization’ will be set in two moments of reflection, in Rio de Janeiro and in Paris. They will allow the mobilization of efforts to focus on what in the speeches and patrimonial practices is perceived as "saved" while being, at the same time, what trivializes a local economy, promotes the destruction of informal settlements, or still, transforms radically established practices. Relating what labeling leaves on the territories, which territories it produces and leaves as inheritance will be the subject of these meetings.

À luz da complexa relação entre história e memória, o dossiê Entre história e memória no cinquentenário do golpe de 1964 – nº 10 (dezembro/2014) proposto pela Revista Crítica Histórica tem a finalidade de suscitar o debate em torno de questões relacionadas ao golpe civil-militar de 1964 e a ditadura que se iniciou a partir daí, vinculando acontecimentos passados à manifestação de seus feitos e legados em períodos posteriores. Portanto, através desta chamada, convidamos pesquisadores a contribuírem com seus trabalhos e reflexões sobre o tema. Ademais, o convite se estende também àqueles interessados em contribuir com as seções de fluxo contínuo, resenhas, documentação, ensaios, entrevistas (ver as seções que compõe a Revista Crítica Histórica).

2e Séminaire international travail et éducation

Organisé à la suite d’une première rencontre en 2003 qui avait exploré le statut épistémologique, politique, culturel et subjectif des savoirs produits et mobilisés par les travailleurs dans des situations de travail, ainsi que les processus de construction et légitimation de ces savoirs, le deuxième séminaire « Travail et éducation : processus de production et légitimation de savoirs » se centrera, dix ans plus tard, sur la question de l’énigmatique dans l’activité de recherche et se déroulera sur deux jours à l’université fédérale d'Ouro Preto (campus Mariana) au Brésil. L’objectif de cette rencontre est de mieux comprendre le processus de recherche et ses obstacles, en partant du postulat que, pour tout sujet-chercheur, l’objet de la recherche n’est pas neutre mais s’inscrit dans un parcours personnel spécifique ; En confrontant non pas nos résultats mais nos processus de recherche, nous réfléchirons ensemble à la façon dont nos différentes démarches et méthodologies, au-delà de leur validité scientifique propre à chaque épistémologie, comportent des « points aveugles » issus de nos modes de lien au monde (nos themata dirait Gérard Holton).

C'est l'annonce et l'appel à communication pour le colloque international sur Michel Bakounine et l'Association Internationale des Travailleurs, organisé du 10 au 13 novembre 2014 à l'Université de São Paulo (FFLCH-USP) et qui implique à la fois historiens, géographes, philosophes et sociologues. Il s'agit à la fois de reconstruire la trajectoire du célèbre révolutionnaire russe pendant la période où il a participé aux activités de la Première Internationale (1864-1876) et de problématiser la contribution de Bakounine et de ses réseaux à la fondation du mouvement libertaire international et à l'histoire intellectuelle du socialisme. La date limite pour présenter des propositions de communication est fixée pour le 4 août 2014.

Transfopress meeting II

The TRANSFOPRESS project, initiated by Diana Cooper-Richet in 2012, aims at coordinating studies on the press in foreign languages published in different countries and getting researchers from different fields to work together to identify, organize and analyze this particular corpus of neglected documents. The second TRANSFOPRESS MEETING (II) follows up the RENCONTRE TRANSFOPRESS I which took place in November 2013, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), in Paris. Its objective is to bring together all the colleagues concerned by the project to present their findings.
