  Criminal Law and Emotions in European Legal Cultures

  From the 16th Century to the Present

  This two-day conference seeks to historicize the relationship between law and emotions, focusing on the period from the sixteenth century to the present. It aims to ask how legal definitions, categorizations and judgments were influenced by, and themselves influenced, moral and social codes; religious and ideological norms; scientific and medical expertise; and perceptions of the body, gender, age, social status. By examining the period between the sixteenth century and the present day, this conference also seeks to challenge and problematize the demarcation between the early modern and the modern period, looking at patterns and continuities, as well as points of fissure and change, in the relationship between law and emotions.

  Ce colloque s'inscrit dans les recherches historiques et sociologiques qui s'attachent à produire une « description dense » des pratiques de la violence physique. L'objectif principal de cette entreprise est de dévoiler les logiques, les effets structurants de la violence et les formes de communications qui lui sont propres. Nous concentrant sur les différents espaces marqués par la violence en Lorraine entre 1870 et 1962 ainsi que sur les discours qui leur sont liés, nous traiterons notamment la question des ruptures et des continuités d'exercice de la violence physique dans cette région.

  The Bonds That Unite?

  Historical Perspectives on European Solidarity

  The concept of “solidarity” is in many respects fundamental to the European project. While pro-European intellectuals had long applied it as a more or less abstract reference, the concept evolved into a solid cornerstone of European unity after the Second World War. The notion of a European solidarity union was essential to validating the integration process and had always been a component of redistribution policies on the supra-national level. Nevertheless it remained context-sensitive and open to interpretation and consequently was always the outcome of complex negotiation processes. The conference will examine various manifestations and interpretations of the solidarity concept in the course of the 19^th and 20^th centuries.

  Collapse and Resilience of German Missions 1914-1939

  World War I had a devastating impact upon German Missions (Roman Catholic and Protestant). A general description of German mission fields A.D. 1914 will be the starting point of the Conference. Case studies are welcome on particular territories such as Togo, Cameroon, East Africa, South-West Africa, South East Asia, Pacific area, China, India, Middle East. Attention will be paid to the predicament of local "orphaned" Christian churches and communities, and to the relationships between the local leadership with the new foreign missions authorized by the Allies instead of German personnel.

  Foreign Rule in Western Europe

  Towards a Comparative History of Military Occupations, 1940-1949

  Military occupations were a crucial part of the collective experience of Western European societies during the mid-20th century. Occupations conducted by Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and the Western Allies varied in terms of their goals, methods, and most significantly in their use of violence. In many respects, however, these ideologically different regimes of occupation also shared a range of common features. In contrast to the ruthless occupation policies in the East, these regimes sought to find a viable mode of interaction with both local social intermediaries and the broader population, and thus generally attempted to stabilize their rule by pacifying occupied societies. Many of the quotidian ruling techniques and practices deployed for this purpose produced a set of related socio-political legacies across Western European societies which found their distinctive expression during the subsequent decades.

  Transformationen der Antikolonialismusdebatte in der europäischen Aufklärung

  Die Rezeption der Schriften von Guillaume-Thomas Raynal zeigt eine facettenreiche Transformation seiner auf die außereuropäische Welt bezogenen Autonomiekonzeption durch die Geschichtsphilosophie Johann Gottfried Herders sowie die Schriften von Garlieb Merkel, der seine Kolonialismuskritik gegen die bedrückenden Verhältnisse in den russischen Ostseeprovinzen wendet. Im Zentrum der Arbeitstagung stehen deshalb der von Raynal initiierte Paradigmenwechsel in der Sicht der Europäer auf die außereuropäische Welt, Herders theologisch grundierte historische Anthropologie sowie Merkels sozialpolitisch motiviertes Befreiungsnarrativ, das die nationalkulturelle Selbstfindung in den baltischen Ländern maßgeblich beeinflusst hat.

  Doctoral workshop looking at the history and topography of occupied Berlin (1945-1949)

  Dans notre atelier, nous souhaitons adopter un point de vue original en portant, à partir de l’histoire du genre, un regard particulier sur la ville et la société berlinoise d’après-guerre. Ainsi, nous proposons de revisiter la période de sortie de guerre à Berlin, terrain propice à l’observation des reconfigurations d’une société ayant subi et soutenu à différents degrés le national-socialisme et, plus particulièrement, à l’observation des relations sociales genrées entre femmes et hommes. Pour l’Allemagne, et plus particulièrement pour la ville de Berlin, la dictature nationale-socialiste et la Seconde Guerre mondiale ont constitué une période troublée pour les relations de genre oscillant entre expérimentation, violence et misère sexuelle. Si le nazisme et la guerre semblent à première vue avoir renforcé la séparation des sexes, ils ont en réalité largement contribué à déplacer les frontières de genre.

  Une histoire de la sensibilité

  Perception et prise en charge des victimes de catastrophe (XIIIe-XVIIIe siècle)

  Dans le contexte contemporain, le discours et la gestion des situations de catastrophe ou de mort de masse s'organisent en priorité autour de la place et du traitement des victimes. Cette attitude de la société contemporaine face à la dévastation, qualifiée tantôt de « compassionnelle », tantôt d' « humanitaire » ou bien encore de « tragique », reflète une forme de sensibilité qui suppose en amont la définition de l'événement catastrophique comme un drame. Le succès actuel de la notion de catastrophe, applicable comme grille de lecture à des réalités très différentes, met bien en lumière la valeur anthropologique fondamentale de la condition de victime, laquelle constitue de nos jours une figure centrale de notre rapport au monde. Ce colloque voudrait interroger dans une perspective historique ce lien éthique entre catastrophe et victime.
