“Celui qui parle, c’est aussi important !” Forms and variations of author-function in linguistics, philology, and literature

Since the 1960s there has been much critical reflection on the figure of the author, and this has been analysed from several angles in linguistic and literary studies as well as more recent forms of web writing in the wake of the digital revolution. First, structuralism and Saussurian theory laid the groundwork for the renewal of Literary theory. The “death of the author” propounded by Barthes (1961) offered the chance to redefine the essence, the role and the status of the author. The first person to accept this challenge was Michel Foucault, during his lecture Qu’est-ce qu’un auteur? at Collège de France, on 22 February 1969. Beyond the limits of historical and ideologically connoted analysis, debate on the matter is far from settled. On the contrary, the authorial question offers food for thought in different fields of linguistics, philology and literature. If the modern concept of author called for reflection on Beckett’s provocative “qu’importe qui parle?”, even today the number of issues that can be investigated in relation to the author prove how important this is for all three aforementioned disciplines.

Artisans et ateliers dans l’Italie antique et médiévale

Atelier d'initiation à la recherche

Pour la cinquième année consécutive, les membres de l’École française de Rome proposent une semaine d’initiation à la recherche consacrée à la question des artisans et des ateliers dans l’Italie antique et médiévale. Des conférences méthodologiques, des ateliers pratiques et des visites permettront d’aborder cette thématique. La formation aura lieu à Rome, du 25 au 29 janvier 2021 et est ouverte aux étudiantes et étudiants de master 1 et master 2 de diverses disciplines (histoire, histoire de l’art, archéologie et sciences sociales), inscrits dans une université française, dont les recherches s’intéressent de près ou de loin aux productions artisanales antiques et médiévales.

Intersections. New perspectives for public humanities

HFC-INT 2020

The international network Humanities for Change, in accordance with the interdisciplinary spirit and the contaminatory approach that characterize its activities, intends to organize a day of study on the theme of public humanities. The meeting aims to stimulate some reflections coming from different fields of knowledge and to encourage the dialogue between researchers on the possibilities of the humanities to escape from academic circles. In this sense, the main object of study is the analysis of methodologies and tools related to knowledge dissemination practices for historical, artistic and philological-literary disciplines. Particular attention will also be given to new professional figures connected to the degree courses of the humanities faculties (such as the 'public historian') and to the interactions of these professional figures with the new media of communication and mass dissemination.

Du rite au mythe : le carnaval dans la culture européenne

D’où vient la profonde exigence sociale du carnaval et quels sont les thèmes et les motifs que cette tradition a fait émerger dans notre héritage culturel et artistique ? Du drame bouffon à la farce et à la grande tradition de la commedia dell’arte italienne, des observations de Goethe sur le carnaval de Rome aux compositions de Schumann (Carnaval, op. 9) et de Saint-Saëns (Le Carnaval des Animaux), jusqu’à la peinture de Brueghel l’Ancien, Monet, Pissarro et Elrond, le carnaval a fasciné de nombreux auteurs. Le but de ce colloque est de recueillir et de combiner des idées innovatrices pour l’analyse ou la reformulation de ce mythe, en créant un pont entre les perspectives de lecture les plus diverses dans le domaine des humanités.

Convegno telematico

Il convegno è dedicato alle teorie, ai discorsi e alle pratiche attraverso le quali le autorità pubbliche e i soggetti politici hanno contrastato, favorito, manipolato e spiegato alcuni tra gli eventi insurrezionali più importanti dell’età moderna (secoli XVI-XIX). L’obiettivo è riflettere su come tali azioni abbiano contribuito a fissare in presa diretta le interpretazioni dei conflitti politici e la fisionomia dei gruppi sociali e delle fazioni che vi prendevano parte. A tal fine si procederà tramite un approccio interdisciplinare, che combinerà l’analisi storico-evenemenziale con quella discorsiva e mobiliterà le metodologie della storia del pensiero politico e del diritto.

Archives de la recherche archéologique

L'École française de Rome et le Centre Jean Bérard en partenariat avec l'Institut national d'histoire de l'art organise un atelier de formation doctorale sur l'apport des archives historiques à la recherche archéologique qui aura lieu à Rome et à Naples du 26 au 30 octobre 2020. L’examen d’une documentation archivistique en grande partie inédite et encore peu exploitée permet de reconstituer les contextes archéologiques d’œuvres antiques découvertes depuis le XVIII^e siècle et aujourd’hui privées de provenance précise. Les fonds de dessins, cartes et photographies anciennes, mémoires des académies et des instituts scientifiques du XIX^e siècle, constituent un corpus documentaire qui, une fois complété par l’examen physique des œuvres et des structures identifiées, permet d’apporter de précieuses informations à l’archéologie actuelle et à l’histoire culturelle des sociétés anciennes. À la croisée des regards et des approches de l’historien, de l’archéologue, de l’historien de l’art et du conservateur, l’atelier a pour objectif de présenter aux jeunes chercheurs une méthodologie éprouvée par les travaux récents mais encore peu connue dans le milieu universitaire.

Contending Representations: Questioning Republicanism in Early Modern Genoa (1559-1684)

In the past thirty years, several studies have been devoted to the political and cultural flowering of the republic of Genoa during the so-called ‘siglo de los Genoveses’, between 1528 and 1630, when Genoa became the hub of European trade and an important epicenter of artistic and literary production. Yet little attention has been granted to the cultural and economic crisis that followed or to how Genoese republican state power was represented during the long seventeenth century, especially in relation to neighbouring polities. To address this gap, the conference will explore how the Genoese Republic shaped its political image between 1559 – the year of the publication of Oberto Foglietta’s Delle cose della repubblica di Genova – and 1684, when Genoa was bombed by the French. We intend to address questions such as how did Genoese politicians and men of letters represent their homeland? How was Genoa represented by the Genoese community in Spain or in the Low Countries? How was its political system conceived by other Italian and non-Italian political writers? And how did prevailing depictions of absolutism influence republican rhetoric?

MemWar. Mémoire et oublis des guerres et des traumas du XXe siècle

Le XXIe siècle nait de l’histoire tourmentée du XXe, avec ses deux guerres mondiales et les autres conflits de dimension européenne, comme la Guerre civile espagnole. Ce colloque, organisé par le groupe de recherche « MemWar. Mémoires et oublis des guerres et des traumatismes du XX^e siècle » du Département de Langues et cultures modernes de l’Université de Gênes, vise à analyser les modalités de transmission mémorielle de ces conflits au XXI^e siècle, les représentations de ces derniers, les points aveugles et/ou obscurs de ce processus mémoriel, y compris dans une optique critique (Ricoeur, 2003) et, enfin, comment se développent les rapports de force entre discours officiel et contre-discours.

La thématique retenue cette année – « Circulation des savoirs et dynamiques économiques aux époques médiévale et moderne : mobilités des hommes, transferts techniques et enjeux territoriaux » est à la croisée de l’histoire culturelle et de l’histoire économique. Cette thématique permettra également de poursuivre et d’approfondir celles qui ont été développées les années précédentes (la valeur des choses, la pauvreté, les biens communs, les moyens de paiement, la qualité, l’organisation du travail, les écritures de l’économie, entreprendre).

Hate and Enemy in history

In the course of history, the process of creating the image of the “enemy”, has often taken place among people of the same nationality, but strategies aimed at the construction of external enemies were equally widespread. If anti-soviet rhetoric, for instance, occupied a central place in Western countries’ public debates, anti-American sentiments have manifested in different shapes and variants in several geographical areas. This monographic issue intends to contribute to the creation of a space of historiographical debate on “hatred and enemy”, inevitably wide and complex, through the reconstruction of specific case studies that analyze the different shapes and forms taken by these phenomena in different times and places.

Le fait religieux dans les villes méditerranéennes (XIIe-XVe siècle)

Ce quatrième atelier de formation doctorale s’inscrit dans le prolongement direct de la scuola di alti studi dottorali qui, de 2004 à 2016, a constitué un lieu de formation de pointe pour les jeunes chercheurs consacrant leurs recherches à l’étude de la culture locale. L’objectif des ateliers est l’étude des sociétés urbaines du Moyen Âge, en mettant l’accent sur les systèmes politiques et les différentes manifestations de l’imaginaire urbain et en portant le regard sur toutes les villes du bassin méditerranéen – celles de l’Occident chrétien, celles de la zone d’influence byzantine et celles des régions sous domination islamique. Les ateliers offrent un environnement stimulant pour les échanges intellectuels entre spécialistes réputés et jeunes chercheurs en formation, pour favoriser, à travers des moments de discussion et d’échange, le renouvellement de la recherche et l’élargissement des perspectives comparatives.

La crise, quelle(s) crise(s) ?

Nouvelles lectures politiques de la République tardive, des Gracques à la mort de César

Les Modernes considèrent usuellement les dernières décennies de la République romaine comme une période de crise, dont le paroxysme fut atteint lors des guerres civiles qui ouvrirent la voie au principat augustéen. Cette vision était également celle des contemporains, pour qui le déséquilibre de la vie politique était vécu comme un processus incontrôlé, à l’issue incertaine ; elle fut amplifiée par des auteurs postérieurs et a exercé une influence décisive sur les Modernes, qui l’associent aux notions de déclin, de révolution, d’Untergang, ou de fall. Le terme de crise paraît par conséquent porteur de préconceptions, induisant par son omniprésence une distorsion sur l’interprétation de la période. Il apparaît nécessaire de restituer à la notion de crise sa valeur heuristique, avec comme point de départ un regard critique sur l’historiographie de la période.

A Fragile State Monopoly? Policies and Practices of Gun Control and the Redefinition of State Prerogatives on the Global Stage, 1890s-1940s

This conference seeks to reflect on the relationship existing between private gun ownership and the processes of imposition (or re-imposition) of State legitimacy in peacetime as much as during or in the aftermath of armed conflicts. It intends to do so specifically by addressing how the process of modernization and its ensuing tendency to codification and the world wars and their long shadows have had an impact on three aspects of these processes: institutional regulations on civilian possession of firearms from above; juridical debate on limits and rights of State control; practices and culture of gun ownership on the ground.

The COST Action “Islamic Legacy: Narratives East, West, South, North of the Mediterranean (1350-1750)” [CA 18129] is launching a call for a conference “Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)”. The event that we are disseminating is being organised within this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. We aim to create a network that will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders.

The conference aims to bring together junior and senior scholars across the humanities and social sciences, sharing a common interest in the DRC. It specifically aims to provide space for transdisciplinary and comparative analyses and reflections, within and beyond Congolese Studies. This edition of the Congo Research network (CRN) focuses on the concept of “becoming”: the becoming of research on/around the Congo (new paths and new relations between "knowledges/epistemologies" and agents—academics, artists, writers, cultural operators, journalists and bloggers, activists and others); the becoming of Congolese culture (new places of creation and exhibition, new ways of sharing/transmitting knowledge and cultural practices); the becoming of land and questions of mobility, not only in the Congo, but also in Africa and the world (climate change and social justice).
