Dynamis of the Image. An Archaeology of Potentialities (II)

The project Dynamis of the image aims at exploring the power of images in the contemporary globalized world by focusing not on the image’s referential functions, but on its performative forces. By asking by what means images generate affects, produce events or sometimes even provoke wars, the project critically reflects on the traditionally dominant Western paradigm of image thinking which has customarily reduced images to mere signifiers or inanimate objects. On the other hand, the project points toward a more encompassing perspective on images by including non-Western, premodern oder anthropological frameworks where the image has been reflected upon not in terms of its ontology, but in terms of its efficacy.

Trois bourses de début de thèse mises au concours par le Basel Graduate School of History (BGSH)

La Basel Graduate School of History (BGSH) met au concours trois bourses de début de thèse d’une durée d’une année. Le montant de chacune s’élève à 25'000.- CHF (environ 20'000 euros, en deux tranches avec évaluation). Les bourses doivent servir à soutenir les doctorants et doctorantes durant la phase de début de thèse, durant laquelle les boursiers et boursières doivent élaborer un projet de recherche et le déposer sous forme de requête auprès du Fonds national suisse ou d’une autre institution d’encouragement.

Revisiting the Historical Connections between Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in a Global Context

The workshop posits that after 1945, the interconnectedness of questions of nutrition, agriculture and poverty became a central aspect of international governance, and that issues of food and agriculture posed particular challenges to national sovereignty. We thus approach the history of FAO as a history of the ideas and practices of economic and social ‘development’ embedded in local, regional, national, and global contexts and with implications on all these levels. We propose to examine the process by which the FAO facilitated the institutionalisation and globalisation of debates on agricultural production and food security, how it integrated previous international and transnational networks, and how it navigated the tension between agrarian commercialisation and rural welfare during the Cold War and Decolonisation.

Plurilocalités résidentielles et populations locales

Revue annuelle « Cahiers de démographie locale » 2013 (parution 2014)

Le millésime 2013 des Cahiers de démographie locale est consacré aux plurilocalités résidentielles et spécifiquement à leur diversité et à leur impact à l’échelle locale. Pour autant qu'il y ait eu des études pionnières – notamment en France celles des chercheurs ayant participé à l’ouvrage collectif « d’une maison l’autre » en France – la plurilocalité résidentielle a été peu présente dans les analyses démographiques. Les raisons sont techniques et épistémologiques. Mais aujourd’hui des données en France (Bonnin and Villanova, 1999) – notamment l’Enquête Famille et Logements de 2011 - et dans d’autres pays d’Europe permettent de dépasser ces difficultés. Ce numéro des Cahiers de démographie locale a pour but de contribuer à la meilleure connaissance de ce thème méconnue et d’actualité.

Multilokale Residentialität, Stadt- und Raumplanung

Multilokale Residentialität, die in jüngerer Zeit an Bedeutung gewinnt und auch zunehmend in der Öffentlichkeit wahrgenommen wird, praktizieren Menschen auf unterschiedliche Weise. Diese zeitweiligen Wohnpraktiken an verschiedenen Standorten haben gesellschaftliche Auswirkungen – sowohl für den Zusammenhalt in der Familie (Thema unserer vorherigen Workshopsitzung in Freiburg/Bsg) wie auch auf lokaler Ebene (z.B. lokale Partizipation). Zudem schaffen sie Bedürfnisse und stellen Ansprüche an die Infrastruktur in puncto Verkehr, Wohnen und Dienstleistungen (Kinderbetreuung, Einkaufen, Öffnungszeiten der Verwaltung usw.). Sind sie mit den existierenden Infrastrukturen vereinbar, die für ein monolokales Wohnen konzipiert wurden?

Bourses pour la phase initiale du doctorat - Basel Graduate School of History

Die Basel Graduate School of History (Basel Universität) schreibt vier einjährige Startstipendien à je 25 000 Fr. (ca. 20 000 Euro, in zwei Tranchen mit Evaluierung) aus. Die Stipendien dienen der Unterstützung Graduierter während der Startphase des Doktorats, in welcher die Stipendiaten ein Forschungsprojekt ausarbeiten und sich mit diesem beim Schweizerischen Nationalfonds oder bei einer anderen Förderinstitution bewerben.

Normes, institutions et pratiques économiques illégales dans l'Europe méditerranéenne (16e-19e siècles)

La relation entre normes, institutions et développement économique fait l'objet d'importantes recherches récentes de la part des historiens et des économistes. L'atelier sur la « fraude » affronte cette question en proposant d'étudier, à partir des fréquentes pratiques illégales des acteurs sociaux, la régulation croissante du commerce méditerranéen à l'époque du mercantilisme.

Ici et là : ressources et vulnérabilités de la vie multilocale

Here and there: resources and vulnerabilities of multi-local life

Phénomène ancien et pluriel (bergers transhumants, ouvriers saisonniers, noblesse, etc.) l’éclatement des lieux de vie et les modes d'habiter multilocal gagnent aujourd’hui en importance dans nos sociétés (migrants transnationaux, navetteurs professionnels, enfants en garde alternés, etc.). L’habiter multilocal ménage des potentialités d’action et de résilience face à des changements localisés (politiques, sociaux, familiaux, etc.) en mobilisant savoir et pouvoir être mobile, savoir se faire d’ici et de là-bas, avoir accès à des ressources en infrastructures et services, maîtriser les techniques. Mais la multilocalité rend aussi vulnérable (désintégration familiale et local, dépendance aux moyens techniques, dépendance aux aléas des marchés de l’emploi, épuisement psychique et physique, etc.). L’objet de cet atelier, avant tout de sociologues et d'historiens, est de mettre en lumière ce champ de recherche.

Images of Animate Movement. Representations of Life

The fascinating paradox that we can see life in abstract images is the starting point of this conference. In a drawing of just a few lines, we can immediately recognize a human figure walking. A moving quadrangle can be seen as a crawling caterpillar. And some well-placed moving points are directly joined together in the form of a dancing couple. Again and again, we are astonished that we can actually see a creature moving in the image – even when the image is of such a reduced and simple nature or when it is not even a temporal moving image. How this impression of animate movement can be explained is what is explored at this conference: how can a simple line or form suddenly transform into something so specifically meaningful? How is this transition – this coming to life – to be described? How can it be constructed in the first place? The conference "Images of Animate Movement. Representations of Life" brings together different domains of knowledge in order to approach the phenomenon of animate movement and its images in its complexity in a new way.

According to which logics do images migrate, metamorphose, transform themselves? Is it possible to translate an image? How do images convey meaning through their incessant self-alteration? The conference "Translatio imaginum" aims at conceptualizing this oven overlooked aspect of images.

Schatzkulturen im Mittelalter. Diskurs, Praxis, Vorstellung

Nos yeux se mettent à briller à peine prononcé le mot trésor, et la fantaisie nous emporte inéluctablement vers des mondes merveilleux. Ce charme lointain, l’idée comme la promesse de richesse qui lui est associé, ne sont pas fortuits mais semblent constitutifs du concept même. Ce sont ces multiples dimensions en effet, cette pluralité de sens toute en nuances, qui désignent le « trésor », catégorie aussi généreuse que fuyante, comme un concept important des sociétés pré-modernes.
