First Annual EDIT Colloquium
The EDIT project, led by Dr Aengus Ward (University of Birmingham), aims to create a virtual space for the Estoria de Espanna with the long-term aim of producing an electronic edition of this important chronicle. There will be four annual colloquia during the project and the first one will be held at the University of Birmingham on the 10th and 11th of april of 2014.

Foreign Language Film Conference V
Submissions are invited for the fifth Foreign Language Film Conference, on the theme of Rights and Representations. In this historic setting of the American South, and in conjunction with Birmingham's 50th anniversary remembrance of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing, FLFC celebrates civil and human rights. Scholars will consider the question of civil rights in international cinematic traditions. How does film as an art and a genre represent civil rights, and human rights? What are the places of rebellion, terrorism, or non-violent resistance in forging individual freedoms, and how is this reflected in national cinematic traditions? How do international films address issues of discrimination, violence, repression, the struggle for social equality ? On the pedagogical side of the question, how do films about civil rights teach their viewers about international cultural and political traditions and movements ? How are these films incorporated into classroom discussions of global civil rights ? -

In recent years, studies into experiences of health care have led historians to engage with the issue of the medical complaint. As expressions of dissatisfaction, disquiet and failings in service provision, the complaint is both a vital antidote to progressive histories of health care and, in generating contemporary investigation and debate, has also left a fertile seam for historical research. Often it is only when things go wrong that we begin to understand thecomplexity at work in past events. This two-day international conference will explore what has happened historically when medicine generated complaints. -

CHRONOS est une série de conférences consacrée aux recherches actuelles sur la morphologie, la syntaxe, la sémantique et la pragmatique des marqueurs de temps, d’aspect, de modalité et d’évidentialité (TAME). Les conférences antérieures se sont déroulées à Paris (2009), Austin (2008), Antwerp (2006), Geneva (2004), Groningen (2002), Nice (2000), Valenciennes (1998), Brussels (1996) et Dunkerque (1995). Les conférences accueillent des présentations de chercheurs provenant de différentes écoles et travaillant dans des cadres linguistiques variés. Les doctorants sont chaleureusement invités à présenter leurs recherches ! -

Le but du présent colloque est de décrire et d’analyser les changements actuellement en cours, et les lieux où les pratiques discursives actuelles s’avèrent susceptibles de faire évoluer les systèmes verbaux des langues romanes, ainsi que d’évaluer les facteurs déclencheurs du changement. Les organisateurs espèrent que la rencontre sera le point de départ pour un réseau international de recherche sur les sujets abordés. -

Cette conférence thématique rassemblera des chercheurs qui, aux quatre coins du monde, travaillent sur le temps, l’aspect et la modalité dans l’acquisition de la langue maternelle ou d’une langue seconde. Bien que le comité d’organisation n’ait travaillé que sur le français, la conférence n’est absolument pas limitée à cette langue et des présentations consacrées à d’autres langues – particulièrement les moins étudiées – sont particulièrement bienvenues. -
