Quo vadis Provenance Research?

Primary Sources and Archival Collections in Post-Unitarian Italy

The workshop will focus on primary sources and archival collections in post-unitarian Italy, which serve as a fundamental tool for provenance research. Research projects dealing with the Italian post-unitary period up to the recent years still face the significant challenge of not only having to locate archival sources, but also of finding a way to access and consult them. The workshop aims to put this issue up for discussion and wishes to promote an open dialogue between international scholars and representatives of research institutions. The focus lies not only on traditional art historical sources such as specified libraries, photographic collections, private estates or institutional archives. It is also intended to include historical and political archives. The aim is to connect various sources and methods of archival work related to the field of provenance research and to identify potential improvements in the provision and the use of archival material (including digital data) in Italy and abroad.

We are interested in articles that shed light on the visual culture of the former Habsburg Empire and Central Europe broadly defined from the medieval period to the present. Contributions that position Austrian art practices within a wider international framework are particularly welcome. We value innovative art historical approaches, such as challenging established narratives or exploring transnational exchanges that highlight the interconnected and cross-cultural nature of the art world. The Belvedere Research Journal is also keen to feature work on artists and figures who have been historically underrepresented, with a special emphasis on women. We encourage interdisciplinary research that blends art history with methodologies from other fields, such as digital humanities, social sciences, and cultural economics.

Possibilities of the Contemporary Landscape

Contemporary representations of landscapes are evolving considering the new climatic, political, and technological challenges. The advent of the Anthropocene has led to a reevaluation of the relationship between humans and nature and, consequently, the mode of landscape representation, not only as a motif, but also as a form and construction. Additionally, the fragmentation of memories, the growth of new technologies, and the constant flux of images disrupt the way contemporary artists represent life. This workshop will compare different techniques and construction systems to think about the landscape as a motif, subject, and theoretical concept facing today's challenges.

This workshop challenges traditional East-West Cold War narratives by examining the cultural interactions between communist Europe and the Global South. We will primarily focus on art, culture, and heritage as sources of new insights into historical narratives. We ask the following questions: How can artistic expression contribute to the rethinking of historical narratives? How have political circumstances shaped artistic and cultural production, and vice versa? What were the underlying power dynamics? And what are the contemporary legacies of such interactions?

Herrmann/Horner: two Hollywood giants in the service of the emotional?

This international symposium pays tribute to two Hollywood giants, Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975), who died on December 24, 1975 during post-production of Martin Scorcese's Taxi Driver, and James Horner (1953-2015), who was accidentally killed on June 22, 2015 while piloting one of his jets. This singular way of arousing visceral emotion or probing affects offers a possible convergence between these two Hollywood giants. Following the example of the emotional register, we could examine the various aspects of Bernard Herrmann's work that have received little attention, or focus in depth on the constituent elements of James Horner's style. These are just a few of the avenues open to us, but as this is first and foremost a tribute, the paths to be taken are multiple, depending on what the participants wish to highlight.

Translation and Translators in the Colonial Context

Roles, Functions and Narratives

The chronological reading of colonial contexts allows us to identify the “organic” link between translation and the colonial project, before, during and after the military occupation. Translation has acquired several functions; highlighting the role of the translator between the narratives of the colonizer and that of the colonized. Until 2000, seventy percent of the world's population had a “colonial” past, either as a colonizer or as a colonized. (Etemad, 258), which suggests that more than seventy percent of the world's population have been affected, and perhaps still are, through the prism of translation. The Conference will attempt to understand how translation was put at the service of the colonial project? What translation approaches have been adopted by translators and interpreters? How did translational discourse influence the cultures of the occupier and the occupied?

En s’inscrivant dans le courant des cultural studies, le dossier « Questions de mots : écrire, dire et entendre la contestation » invite les chercheur·euse·s en sciences humaines et arts à une réflexion interdisciplinaire sur les usages des mots, croisant l’histoire des mentalités avec celle des émotions, dans une temporalité élargie allant de la Renaissance à nos jours. Il a, entre autres, pour objectif de comprendre la construction et la portée culturelle, sociale, politique des mots, la manière dont ils sont véhiculés et appropriés par les individus ou les groupes dans des contextes contestataires, revendicatifs ou révolutionnaires.

Aux sources de la vie musicale et théâtrale à Nantes aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles

À l’occasion de la parution prochaine du Catalogue des fonds musicaux anciens conservés dans les Pays de la Loire consacré à la ville de Nantes, le ministère de la Culture a souhaité valoriser le travail d’inventaire du « Patrimoine musical régional » qu’il conduit avec la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Le colloque sera l’occasion de faire le point sur l’avancée de ce chantier, de présenter l’origine des fonds musicaux conservés à Nantes et d’apporter un nouvel éclairage sur les institutions productrices de musique et de spectacles, sur les lieux et les salles ainsi que sur les publics. À cet égard, les parcours de personnalités organisatrices de concerts et de spectacles, la composition des troupes et des répertoires représentés (comédies, opéras-comiques, opéras, etc.) sont encore trop peu étudiés. La musique dans le cadre privé sera également abordée, avec l’étude des collections d’anciens possesseurs des partitions qui éclaire leurs goûts et leurs personnalités.

Le Centre d’histoire du XIX^e siècle (Université Paris 1 – Sorbonne Université), en partenariat avec la Société d’histoire de la révolution de 1848 et des révolutions du XIX^e siècle, désireux de rendre hommage à la mémoire du professeur Dominique Kalifa (1957-2020) et soucieux de promouvoir l’histoire du XIX^e siècle dans son sens large, a créé un prix annuel destiné à récompenser une thèse de doctorat portant sur l’histoire du XIX^e siècle (1800-1939). Ce prix est destiné à aider à la publication de la thèse.
