  No country for anthropologists?

  Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East

  Many parts of the contemporary Middle East are confronted with war, sectarianism, transnational interferences, uprisings, and a comeback of authoritarian regimes. This brings about various difficulties for ethnographic research as a practice of knowledge production based on the immersion of researchers in given social contexts and the subsequent writing up and publishing of texts. The international conference No country for anthropologists? Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East explores the obstacles to do ethnography in the Middle East and take them as the starting point for reflection upon the role of anthropology with a view to the Middle East of today.

  Image(s) of India

  What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

  Constructing Kurgans

  Burial mounds and funerary customs in the Caucasus, Northwestern Iran and Eastern Anatolia during the Bronze and Iron Age

  The tradition of burying the dead in burial mounds (kurgans), usually consisting of a funerary chamber limited by stone or brickslabs and covered by dirt and gravel, started in the fourth millennium BCE in the northern Caucasus and then spread south to the rest of the Caucasus regions, eastern Anatolia and northwestern Iran during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The spread of the kurgan tradition, as well as the territorial, political, social, and cultural values embedded in their construction and their symbolic relation to the surrounding landscape are under debate. The workshop aims to examine chronological issues, cultural dynamics at inter-regional scale, rituals and burial patterns related to these funerary structures. The beliefs and ideologies that possibly connected the "kurgan people" over such a wide geographical area, as well as past and present theoretical frameworks, will also be discussed.

  Archéorient Reseach laboratory, looking the current state of research methods and fieldwork in the ancient Near-East

  L’enjeu est de réfléchir sur les notions de frontières et de marges, sur leurs manifestations matérielles ou idéelles, sur leur perméabilité (frontières imperméables ou espaces poreux) et sur leurs fluctuations dans le temps et dans l’espace. Une attention sera également portée aux éventuels recoupements entre ces limites et la définition des aires culturelles. Au delà, l’idée est également de revenir sur la perception que les sociétés anciennes pouvaient avoir de l’espace et de la territorialité. Le séminaire comprend onze interventions couvrant une fourchette chronologique large, allant du Néolithique à l’Antiquité. L'aire géographique concernée est celle des terrain d'Archéorient : la Méditerranée orientale et le Proche- et Moyen-Orient.

  "Blue and white" - Chinese-style

  Porcelain and earthenware - between visual sources and material realities (16th-18th century)

  La production de « bleu et blanc » chinois ou « d’inspiration chinoise » constitue un objet d’étude significatif. Ces fameuses porcelaines, fabriquées notamment à Jingdezhen (Jiangxi) durant l’époque Yuan, ont commencé à circuler au sein des cours européennes à l’aube du XVI^e siècle. C’est seulement au cours du XVII^e siècle qu’elles furent l’objet d’un engouement plus large donnant lieu à la fabrication de copies sous la forme de céramiques de diverses qualités. De cette nouvelle « mode » sont nés des substituts inspirés des modèles chinois, accessibles aux bourses les plus modestes. Ainsi est apparu l’épiphénomène des faïences dites « au goût de la Chine ».

  Interdisciplinary approaches and participative sciences (ethnology, psychology, socio-anthropology, archeology, epigraphy, anthropo-paleontology, law)

  Dans toute l’histoire de l’humanité, il y eut des groupes et des individus exceptionnels, élites ou parias, admirés ou méprisés, remarquables et remarqués, doués et maîtrisant un savoir particulier ou simplement à l’écart des groupes sociaux majoritaires. Cette mise en relief ou à l’écart peut être simplement question de personnalité individuelle, et peut aussi provenir du statut et de la morphologie sociale, de circonstances historiques, de circonstances religieuses et symboliques, de circonstances politiques, de circonstances sociales, culturelles et économiques, ou bien de rapports interculturels hiérarchisés. Le sujet est si riche qu’il ne saurait être couvert en l’espace des huit séances du séminaire, aussi faut-il considérer le thème de cette année comme une simple introduction à un ensemble complexe qu’il conviendra d’approfondir par la suite, notamment dans le cadre de futures sessions de ce séminaire.

  Representations of Change

  Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe

  Since the start of the 21^st century seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

  One of the questions raised today by some Egyptian religious authorities is on the lawfulness and relevance of using intellectual tools foreign to the Islamic tradition to read and interpret the Qurʾān and texts of the classic Islamic heritage. Is it permissible and appropriate to use contemporary human sciences to study the texts of the Arab-Islamic patrimony or should it be limited to the Ḥadīṯ? IDEO would like to contribute to this debate by studying the emergence of the Ḥadīṯ as the authority of knowledge in the Islamic sciences between the 4^_ᵗʰ/10ᵗʰ and the 8ᵗʰ/14ᵗʰ century.

  Epigraphy and history of Ancient and Medieval Jordan

  Par leur abondance, leur diversité et leur fragilité, les inscriptions antiques et médiévales de la Jordanie constituent un patrimoine aussi précieux que menacé. Sans elles, des pans entiers de l’histoire du pays resteraient méconnus. Trop souvent, elles sont pourtant étudiées de façon cloisonnée, en fonction des intérêts historiques et des compétences linguistiques des chercheurs. Le colloque de Lyon fournira l’occasion de faire dialoguer les historiens de l’Antiquité et du Moyen Âge, ainsi que des épigraphistes hellénisants et latinisants avec des spécialistes des langues sémitiques transcrites sur la pierre entre la conquête du Proche-Orient par Alexandre le Grand et les premiers siècles de l’islam.

  « Le voyage de Barrès, après ceux de Chateaubriand, de Lamartine, de Gautier, de Gérard de Nerval, aura été le dernier des voyages romantiques d’Orient, des voyages vers l’Orient romantique. Là encore 1914 marque la grande coupure. Cet Orient n’existe plus. » (Albert Thibaudet) La journée se propose d’interroger dans quelle mesure la Grande Guerre modifie la perception et l’écriture de l’Orient chez Barrès. Pour éclairer la genèse d’Une enquête aux pays du Levant, récit né du voyage de 1914 et publié en 1923, on confrontera l’exemple de Barrès aux cas d’écrivains et de savants orientalistes, que ces derniers soient les contemporains ou les informateurs du voyageur.
