  Publication Grants: (pre-1980) historical American art

  2014 Terra Foundation Academic Awards, Fellowships & Grants

  These grants provide support for publication projects on historical American art (pre-1980) that make a significant contribution to scholarship and have an international dimension. Projects may include translations of texts on American art; publications written by non-U.S. scholars or those with a significant number of non-U.S. contributors; and publications with a focused thesis exploring American art in an international context. Projects must be under contract for publication. Books may receive up to $30,000; articles may receive up to $3,000. For more information, please visit our website.

  2014 Charles C. Eldredge Book Prize in American Art

  Call for Nominations

  The Smithsonian American Art Museum invites nominations for the 2014 Charles C. Eldredge Prize, an annual award for outstanding scholarship in American art history. Single-author books devoted to any aspect of the visual arts of the United States and published in the three previous calendar years are eligible. To nominate a book, send a letter explaining the work’s significance to the field of American art history and discussing the quality of the author’s scholarship and methodology. Self-nominations and nominations by publishers are not permitted. The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2013. Please send them to: The Charles C.   These eight-week residential fellowships provide the opportunity to pursue individual work and research in a community of peers while being mentored by senior artists and scholars. Ten fellowships are awarded annually to doctoral students at an advanced stage of research and writing on pre-1980 American art and visual culture and to artists with a master’s degree.

  Smithsonian American Art Museum Fellowship Opportunities

  The Smithsonian American Art Museum and its Renwick Gallery invite applications for research fellowships in art and visual culture of the United States. A variety of predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior fellowships are available. Fellowships are residential and support independent and dissertation research. The stipend for a one-year fellowship is $30,000 for predoctoral fellows or $45,000 for senior and postdoctoral fellows, plus generous research and travel allowances. The standard term of residency is twelve months, but terms as short as three months will be considered; stipends are prorated for periods of less than twelve months.

  Premier colloque international consacré au travail du peintre new-yorkais David Diao. Le colloque proposera des points de vues variés sur le travail de David Diao. Il s’agit d’engager des analyses ciblées sur certains aspects de son travail, mais aussi de proposer des mises en relation entre Diao et d’autres artistes, d’analyser le parcours et l’œuvre de Diao en le situant dans un contexte global de l’art contemporain depuis 1970 jusqu’à aujourd’hui. L’objectif est de contribuer à créer aujourd’hui un ambitieux travail théorique sur le travail de l’artiste.

  The Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art. Manuscripts should advance the understanding of American art, demonstrating new findings and original perspectives. The prize-winning essay will be translated and published in American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s scholarly journal.

Il abordera, enfin, l’incidence de la relation privilégiée de l’Europe avec les États-Unis, dans le cadre de l’OTAN, sur les rapports de l’Europe avec les États d’Europe centrale et des Balkans, du Moyen-Orient et de l’Afrique, en termes de bon voisinage, d’économie solidaire et d’écologie.

  Atelier jeunes chercheurs

  Un atelier mensuel « Jeunes chercheurs handicap(s) et sociétés » se tiendra lors de l'année universitaire 2013 / 2014. Cet atelier s’adresse principalement à des doctorants et post-doctorants engagés dans un travail de recherche sur le handicap. Il est organisé avec le réseau de jeunes chercheurs du programme Handicaps et sociétés de l’EHESS. Les séances offriront aux jeunes chercheurs un espace de présentation et de discussion de leurs travaux. Les questions pratiques rencontrées (publications, orientation professionnelle) ainsi que les problèmes méthodologiques (rapport au handicap, recherche participative) feront l’objet d’une réflexion collective.

  Modernist Communities

  The inaugural international conference of the French Society of Modernist Studies

  The aim of this two-day conference is to foster discussion on communities in the modernist period. As discursive constructs and historical practices, communities constitute a privileged phenomenon from which to understand the political and ethical regime of modernist texts, as well as the actual forms of collective experience in which writers and readers were involved. More than a decade after Jessica Berman’s landmark work on "the politics of community" in modernist fiction, we seek to explore the various ways in which communities were configured across genres and artistic media, but also to acknowledge the grounds of their historical and cultural specificity. We hope that this will lead us to distinguish various versions of the communal, from the ideal to the empirical, from the utopian to the everyday, from consensus to dissensus.

  Ce colloque propose à des chercheurs issus de divers courants disciplinaires (sciences de l’information-communication, sociologie, psychologie, histoire, anthropologie, littérature…) de penser les relations numériques et les rapports numérisés. Les approches pourront proposer théorisations et / ou études de cas, à focale tour à tour micro et macro. C’est plus largement la question théorique centrale du rôle des médiations qui se trouve posée avec acuité dans les thèmes, terrains et problématiques de ce colloque.
