  International migrations and labour from the 70s to the present

  Since the 70s the presence of migrants in Europe, and especially in Italy, has become a structural issue and has been at the center of the public and political debate. The progressive demolition of welfare systems, the job precariousness, and new consumer lifestyles have generated different responses in terms of regulation of the admissions of foreign citizens in search of a job and their management (housing issues, access to health care, etc.). Both with regard to organization of forms of protection of immigrants in the exercise of theirs fundamental rights, especially in cases of serious discrimination and exploitation (immigrant associations, trade union action, etc.).

  Ambrogio Spinola: between Genoa, Flanders and Spain

  Networks and Narratives, War and Finances (1569-1639)

  This international workshop proposes a collective work at the crossroads of the different economic, political, family, military and cultural networks which constituted the changing and complex context of the life of Ambrogio Spinola, a man of immense fortune and unknown military qualities. His framework? Italy, Flanders, Spain. Scholars with different, although complementary, historiographical approaches will gather around Spinola, aiming to publish a collective biography in 2020. This biography will be the result of an interdisciplinary work, mixing the knowledge of historians of the military, diplomacy, aristocracy or economics, but also using the history of news (creation and circulation), written and pictorial culture, or gender history.

  Fiscality and inequalities

  « L’expérience montre que toute personne qui s’intéresse aux impôts, finit par poser les mêmes questions. Elle s’interroge sur l’équité fiscale, compare sa charge fiscale avec celle d’autres contribuables et réclame des droits identiques pour tous ». Cette observation datant des années 1960 nous amène au premier axe de questionnement de la journée : celui lié à la conception de la justice fiscale comme figurant au coeur du contrat social. Cette interprétation bourgeoise issue des Lumières domine la compréhension de la justice fiscale depuis la fin du 18e siècle et c’est elle que l’on retrouve dans les constitutions cantonales dès les années 1830. À l’époque prémoderne, le poids inégal de la dîme, des impôts et des taxes en tout genre a bien souvent joué le rôle de déclencheur dans des mouvements de protestation et de révolte, renvoyant ainsi l’imposition à son caractère extractif, à son potentiel d’instrument de pouvoir. Quels intérêts sociaux, économiques et politiques ont été défendus lors des discussions sur l’impôt « juste » ? Quelle place ont occupé les inégalités en terme d’origine sociale, de genre, de forme du ménage, de statut économique ou d’appartenance territoriale ? ...

  Stone-to-Stone II

  The economy of stone in the Meuse valley and surrounding regions (1st century BC - 18th century)

  The first edition of conferences dedicated to stone economics during the historical periods, which was held in Nancy in 2015, underlined the vitality of the research carried out about this subject, as illustrated by the recent works led in Lorraine. The Stone by Stone series of meetings aim to promote the relevance of stone economics research and to facilitate discussions about the topic, through a cycle of international conferences held every three years. The upcoming Stone by Stone II Symposium will be held in Namur and Dinant in December 2018. It will be co-organized by the University of Namur (AcanthuM – ILEE), by the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL), by the University of Brussels (ULB/VUB), by the University of Lorraine, by the INRAP and by the Maison du Patrimoine medieval mosan, and by the AWAP (Agence wallonne du Patrimoine).

  Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries

  Issuing authorities, political powers, economic influences

  The 10th-11th centuries were crucial for the history of France. The centralized Carolingian state gave way to the regional principalities. Why this happened and how it affected society are core questions for historical research. The study of coins has a huge potential to contribute to this debate. Contrary to written documents, they survive in thousands. Contrary to other archaeological artefacts, coins are struck by official decision, reflecting the “state”. They are more closely datable them most other artefacts. Coins also circulate widely in many spheres of society, reflecting trade and economics.The conference Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries takes advantage of this leap forward to reopen the debate. The aim of the conference is to bring numismatists, archaeologists and historians together in order to confront their ideas for the mutual benefit of historical knowledge.

  This workshop will be the occasion for historians of thought, economists, econometricians, social scientists, specialists in economic methodology or epistemology, and economic or environmental historians to discuss about the articulation between theories, models and facts (broadly speaking) in the past and present environmental and energy economics literature. Prof. Arthur Petersen (UCL) will give a plenary talk about the interdisciplinary dialogue for the elaboration of Integrated Assessment Models. A roundtable will also be taking place with three eminents scholars: Roger Guesnerie (Collège de France), Kirsten Halsnæs (DTU) and Jean-Charles Hourcade (CNRS-CIRED). Around 20 presentations by young and senior scholars from Europe and America are expected, including preliminary results from the #BNREproject.

  A global history of free ports

  Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)

  Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVI^th to the early XX^th century.

  The notions of declassification and reclassification

  Les pratiques de classement et de taxinomie dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine ont été bien étudiées. En revanche, les processus de déchéance, déclassement et de réhabilitation ou reclassement associés, ont moins retenu l’attention des antiquisants, à l’exception peut-être de la damnatio memoriae, notion déjà décrite par les Anciens. Il ne s’agit pas, au cours de cette manifestation scientifique, d’analyser les processus classificatoires, ni les groupes qui en découlent en tant que tels, – elles ont notamment fait l’objet de deux contributions dans le récent volume, Classement, déclassement, Reclassement, Gilles Chabaud (éd.), Limoges 2011– mais plutôt d’aborder, dans une approche inversée, ce qui motive les Anciens à rejeter ou mettre à l’écart d’un regroupement préalable, en d’autres mots à déchoir un objet, une personne, un espace, une pratique, d’une position préalablement bien établie et reconnue de tous.

  Storage: production, accumulation and the redistribution of cereals in the medieval and modern west

  Le 40^e Colloque de Flaran est l’occasion, pour les historiens et les archéologues, de tenter un premier panorama des problématiques relatives au stockage alimentaire, en particulier céréalier, dans l’Europe médiévale et moderne, en s’attachant aux dispositifs matériels des mises en réserve (des modestes greniers aux zones à silos, des granges villageoises aux entrepôts urbains), ainsi qu’aux techniques de conservation. Ils s’intéresseront en outre à l’emplacement et à l’environnement des structures de stockage. On explorera les formes de prélèvement, de dépôt et de répartition qui ont défini l’organisation des sociétés européennes avant le Marché, tout en alimentant parfois les marchés locaux.

  30 years of the Comité pour l'histoire économique et financière de la France

  Le Comité pour l’histoire économique et financière de la France (CHEFF) fête ses 30 ans. À cette occasion, le bureau de la Recherche de l’Institut de la gestion publique et du développement économique (ministères économiques et financiers) organise un colloque international le 25 septembre 2018, au centre Pierre-Mendès-France du ministère de l’Économie et des Finances, sur le thème Histoire(s) et dynamiques économiques. Cet évènement se veut à la fois un moment de bilan historiographique et de débats sur les enjeux et les chantiers de l’histoire économique aujourd’hui. À travers l’exemple du CHEFF, ce colloque propose également un retour sur expérience de la place et du rôle d’un comité d’histoire placé à l’intersection du monde de la recherche et de celui de l’action. À ce titre, il permet de questionner l’histoire et le devenir de ce type de structure.
