  Going to war. France, Germanyn Europe 1917–1923

  L’armistice du 11 novembre 1918 ouvre une période plus ou moins longue de règlement de la paix sur fond de recomposition des frontières en Europe et plus largement dans le reste du monde. Il est loin de clore cependant les violences militaires et politiques mais laisse la place à des épisodes révolutionnaires et de tensions qui pèsent durablement sur l’histoire de l’entre-deux-guerres. En parallèle, les sociétés européennes se reconstruisent sur les ruines de la Grande Guerre, en cultivant des mémoires parfois contradictoires du conflit, tout à la fois creuset d’un renouveau social et politique ; fossoyeur de l’Europe d’une Belle Époque révolue qui nourrit l’internationalisme et le pacifisme des années vingt et trente.

  Lors de cette journée d’étude, nous nous pencherons sur l’évolution de nos environnements technologiques et des modes de rationalité qui sont à l’œuvre dans l’organisation de nos existences à l’ère hypermoderne, cela aussi bien à l’échelle de la société que des entreprises. Quels processus de subjectivation sont engagés dans des environnements qui s’avèrent définis par des logiques de quantification ? Quels horizons de sens sont encore susceptibles d’émerger à l’heure où les systèmes technologiques ne sont pas sans créer de nouveaux régimes d’hétéronomie et de contrôle ? Quelles transformations des milieux – organisationnels, économiques, écologiques – interviennent ?

  Scholars representing various disciplines are kindly encouraged to submit paper proposals focusing on litanies and their forms and representations in different spheres of culture, including liturgy, literature, music, the visual arts, spirituality, and philosophy. The book Litany in the Arts and Culture edited by Witold Sadowski (University of Warsaw) and Francesco Marsciani (University of Bologna) and composed of selected best papers will be proposed for publication to the editorial board of the Brepols series: Studia Traditionis Theologiae Explorations in Early and Medieval Theology.

  To cease fire, to cease hostilities? Since modern times to the present day

  L’historiographie du fait militaire a bénéficié, ces dernières années, d’un profond renouvellement des regards, des objets et des méthodes dans le sillage des travaux de John Keegan. Mais malgré un intérêt croissant pour les phénomènes de reddition (P. Vo-Ha) ou encore pour l’expérience de la captivité de guerre (F. Théofilakis, F. Cochet) et plus généralement pour le sort des vaincus (C. Defrance, C. Horel et F.X. Nérard), l’analyse de l’arrêt des combats fait toujours figure d’angle mort. Or, les organisateurs de ce présent colloque postulent que cet objet constitue un prisme fécond pour questionner l’objet guerre : la manière dont on cesse le combat dit la guerre qui est pensée et menée.

  A central goal of the workshop is to open up an international exchange and to connect perspectives from the history of science, the history of emotions, the history of the body and media history in order to shed new light on a history of health as a cultural history. The event is part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and Body Politics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe” funded by the European Research Council under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Advanced Grant agreement No 694817) led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin).

  Place and awareness of Latin in French from the Middle Ages to the present day

  Ouverture à de nouvelles considérations et de nouvelles approches autour des rapports entre latin et français, ces deux jours seront l’occasion d’échanger et débattre autour des notions de place et de conscience du latin au sein de la langue française, dans une diachronie longue. Il s’agira donc de rendre compte de leurs échanges dynamiques tout au long de l’histoire du français. Loin de réduire le rapport des deux langues à celui d’une filiation (Kuentz, 1985), ce seront les enjeux posés par leurs interactions que nous privilégierons. C’est donc en prenant en considération les dimensions institutionnelle, pragmatique, rhétorique, grammaticale et lexicale, que la place du latin se doit d’être interrogée pour mieux en saisir l’infinie variation.

  The justice of the people, the justice of beyond

  The spirit of the law from Antiquity to the early Middle Ages, 2nd study day

  L’objectif, dans le cadre de cette deuxième journée d’étude consacrée aux lois entre Antiquité tardive et haut Moyen Âge, sera d’apporter des éléments de réponse quant à la place et à la nature qu’accordent les juristes aux leges dans leur approche et leur définition de la justice. De ce point de vue, la justice constitue une thématique de choix car elle révèle la véritable force normatrice de ces lois altimédiévales dont la nature et l’effectivité demeure problématique, tout particulièrement lorsqu’on les confronte à la pratique et aux coutumes locales ou provinciales dans une société subissant de profonds bouleversements. L’apparente continuité des traditions romaines, préservée notamment par les Wisigoths dans leur Lex romana tant dans ses institutions que dans sa procédure ne doit pas cacher une réalité plus complexe où semble prévaloir dans la pratique le pragmatisme aux dépens d’une cohérence législative.

  The question of the relationship between enlightenment and revolution in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is a very old one. Since 2000, the study of both the age of enlightenment and the age of revolution have been renewed by simultaneous turns towards more transnational perspectives—often described as “Atlantic.” Yet relatively little attention has been paid to connecting these Atlantic visions of the enlightenment with new understandings of the Atlantic age of revolution, or to the related problem of integrating these Atlantic approaches with revolutionary historiographies that remain stubbornly national in orientation.

Ce colloque international aura lieu une dizaine de jours après la tenue des élections municipales d'octobre 2018, qui seront un test grandeur nature pour les élections présidentielles et législatives de l'année suivante...

  45 semana internacional de estudios medievales de Estella

  The International Week of Medieval Studies of Estella tackles for the first time Jewish communities in the Western Middle Ages. Studies on this issue has generated a large historiographical output relating to social, cultural, economic and political life across Europe. This edition puts the focus on the profiles, the light and shade, the countenances of these communities. Starting with the history of the Jewish culture, its physical and mental integration into the medieval worlds, its presence in the lifestyle of the period and the images that were produced and still remain in the collective cultural heritage. An exercise of history and memory on the narrative of the Sephardic exile will open the sessions consecrated to the forms of integration and of exclusion of these communities and their material and cultural manifestations.

  The project Arts, ecologies, transitions. Building a common reference wishes to accompany certain notable developments in the field of the arts as well as theoretical discourse on art and which, rejecting the confinement of art to the realm of ‘civilizational oversupply’, are attentive to questions arising from current ecological, economic and social crises as well as the crisis of representation we also currently experiencing. As part of this project, a call for papers is hereby launched for two symposia entitled Encounters: Arts, Ecologies, Transitions. These symposia will focus on current proposals dealing with radical positionings of the artistic ‘transition’, in which the ecological shift is generating new artistic forms, practices and works.

  African Ivories

  In the Atlantic World, 1400-1900

  Since April 2015, the international team working on the project “African Ivories in the Atlantic World: a reassessment of Luso-African ivories” (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014), composed of 27 researchers from the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, has been researching the trade, circulation and production of raw and carved African ivory in the Atlantic area from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The team has identified and listed objects from Portuguese and Brazilian (Minas Gerais) collections, also collecting references and descriptions extant in written Portuguese sources. For the first time a selection of ivory pieces was subjected to lab tests with a view to helping establish their age and origin. The project research team has submitted proposals for re-interpreting material culture in the framework of its African contexts of production.

  Workshop 2. Debates and research

  Dans le cadre du programme des CBMA (Corpus Burgundiae Medii Aevi), et du projet de réalisation d'un corpus structuré et hétérogène de textes latins médiévaux, un premier sous-corpus de textes hagiographiques bourguignons (V^e-XV^e siècle) est en cours de réalisation. Ce deuxième atelier vise à présenter et à débattre collectivement des premières réalisations : l’inventaire des textes hagiographiques et l’état des connaissances qu’il permet de dresser, ainsi que les problèmes rencontrés dans l’acquisition des métadonnées et les solutions à envisager. Il sera aussi l’occasion d’échanger autour des recherches récentes, en aval et en amont du corpus lui-même : les manuscrits, la transmission-transformation textuelle ainsi que les expériences des traitements statistiques.

  Définir l’humanisme juridique par les sources : quelques textes des XVe-XVIe siècles

  Composante essentielle du renouveau intellectuel européen, l’humanisme juridique (it. umanesimo giuridico, angl. legal humanism, all. humanistische Jurisprudenz) se définit par une approche des textes hérités du droit romain qui s’oppose et en même temps complète les traditions médiévales de la glose et du commentaire. Privilégiant les connaissances historiques et linguistiques tirées d’une étude la plus vaste possible des œuvres, monuments et documents de l’Antiquité, les juristes humanistes ont contribué à replacer les écrits du Corpus juris civilis au sein de la civilisation gréco-romaine qui les a vu naître, tout en parachevant l’exégèse déjà mûrie au Moyen Âge grâce au travail des interprètes.

  War as Contact Zone in the Nineteenth Century

  The workshop seeks to encourage further debate on the mechanics of encounter and transfer processes in war during the "long nineteenth century" (1789-1914). It wiil also explore how historians working on this subject can use new digital methods and impact case studies to make their findings accessible to the public. The choice of period is informed by this era’s manifold innovations in such fields as communication, mass transport, weaponry, international law and the conduct of war, which have generated fruitful dialogue on the question whether the nineteenth century set the path for a totalitarianisation of warfare or should instead be evaluated on their own terms.
